I can't make direct comparisons because I haven't played Devil May Cry *shocks the DMC fans* but apparently it plays very much like DMC.

Bayonetta is currently in development and directed by Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry. So it's going to be hack and slash in terms of combat.

The setting is you play as Bayonetta a witch part of an ancient european clan that's been at peace with a rival clan of witches for centuries until something sets off the fued again. The rival witches won't be Bayonetta's only enemies as she also gets to battle against monsters in ornate armour called angels.

To combat her enemies Bayonetta uses her high heel mounted guns, katanas, magic and even her hair. Bayonetta's hair is one of the games biggest features, her clothes are even made up of her long hair and her magic attacks are formed from her hair as well. For instance, in the trailer shown she uses the special attack where her long hair turns into a giant dragon that attacks her enemies, it also leaves her momentarily naked.

The feature revealed in the new trailer shows Bayonetta's ability to transform into a mystical and long limbed black cat, which could be integral to gameplay in the released game.

Whether or not it's worth playing is up to you really and it's a bit early to be making certain judgements. From the trailers though, Bayonetta doesn't look like it's going to be cerebral, it's dialogue is slightly cheesy and it looks like it's going to have some fanservice.

Sounds slightly negative appraisal but it's not, if you want an interesting new hack and slash, you're a fan of DMC and you're after fun gameplay it looks like Bayonetta will tick all the right boxes. I'm definitely going to be watching when the reviews come in.

If There Wasn't Devil May Cry, There Wouldn't Be Bayonetta

I'd also say that Bayonetta's style seems to be the offspring of Devil May Cry and House of the Dead: Overkill.

The characters, setting style and dialogue seem to be heavily based on the same sort of style that Overkill is based upon.

I have.........mixed feelings about this and I don't know what to say. It looks good yes, but why couldn't Dante make a cameo?

Because it's a SEGA game...and it's not Devil May Cry...

Ah, the dialogue seems like it's going to be really bad if the trailer is anything to go by.

Skeksis, when has dialogue ever been awesome in these sort of games? =D

I checked out the latest trailer and the similarities between this and Devil May Cry 4 are incredibly evident:

1. Bayonetta's aerial combos with the sword are pretty identical to Dante's Aerial Rave.
2. Bayonetta's whip functions in the same manner as Nero's Devil Bringer.
3. The giant snake boss moves around (circling the area) and attacks (tail whips etc.) in pretty much the exact same manner as Echidna.
4. The HUD is identical to most HUDs in Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden titles.

I'm sure there will be more similarities in the game.

However, Kamiya-san outright stated that Devil May Cry 4 has an influence as he played it for research purposes. Yet, this game is being touted as revolutionary and so far, there isn't much in terms of revolutionary. The ability to mix and swap weapons on the limbs could be seen as a competitor to Devil May Cry's style-swapping.

Either way, I don't doubt the game's quality as this IS Hideki Kamiya we're talking about. Yet, I'd like to see more originality, rather than something that could easily be seen as an entry in the Devil May Cry series.

It's a mix of DMC and GOW. With added fan-service and cheese. :p
