It’s been 10 years since Dante exploded onto screens across the world and set the benchmark for action games, intricate combat, incredibly stylish fighting and the use of pizza within cutscenes. To celebrate the decade of devil hunting Capcom UK is holding an art competition and we want you to display your talents in creating some of the best Devil May Cry fan art ever!

http://www.capcom-europe.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/devilmaycry_conceptart_fM4U6.jpg

Think about all the iconic characters from Dante, Nero, Vergil, Trish and Mary and all the fantastic weapons they have wielded. Think of the bosses and many battles Dante has had to cleave his way through. And most of all think of the style that all this has been done in, from Dante’s cockiness to Sparda’s impeccable honour! The winners of the competition will receive a place in history when their artwork is featured in a new, to be announced Capcom game!

The deadline for the Devil May Cry 10th Anniversary Art Competition is 22nd July. Please post your artwork in the submissions thread here:http://www.capcom-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?p=988412#post988412

Awesome competition by the way. I'm going to enter even though I suck in comparison to most of the people who enter.

When you start a new blank canvas on Photoshop, it'll come up with the options.

Make them 11 by 17 inches and set it to 300dpi. ;)

I'm just stoked that we'll be seeing a DMC HD 10th Anniversary Collection (Very likely) or a true DMC5! (Not likely)

Look forward to seeing what other stuff people submit!

CaptainCortez
14-07-11, 00:37
You know Leon, a DMC5 might be likely as Capcom plan to announce an unannounced AAA title at Comic-con this month, and with all of the backlash from the new DmC making fans hate the new direction, a new DMC continuing on from the past games would pretty much fly off of the shelves.

I might be completely wrong, but I see the new DmC as possible misdirection, stripping most fans of all hope for the series entirely, and right when everyone's about to give up BOOM, a new DMC comes out, and people are so happy to have it that they rush out to the shops and buy it, securing much higher sales than the previous games. :p

Whatever happens, I still want to play the new DmC as it does actually look pretty fun, and if it shows all of the important things that happened during Dante's childhood, I'd say the game has incredibly huge potential.

Now, to keep my post on topic, I actually have something in the works, but whether or not it'll get anywhere is another thing.

Of course I'd love it to be in the game (my favourite series of all time), but my artistic skills aren't to an industry level, so all I can do is give it my best and watch myself fail. :p

No-one has submitted in the thread yet? I assume when you post to the thread everyone here can see your entry? Seems quite different from the U.S. application process of submitting via email.

I have another question... if someone happens to be a winner, will they be contacted via their registration email for their details, or through message on this site?

Fonix
15-07-11, 12:23
Well I'm hoping everyone is just leaving it to the last minute...

It is different to the US one yes, but it worked really well when we did the MVC3 art comp and gives everyone a chance to see the other entries.

And I'll contact the winner via PM, if they don't respond for a while then I'll send them an email.

CaptainCortez
15-07-11, 12:39
I’m still working on mine, and have done a sketch of Dante, but no background or demons or anything yet.

Kinda wishing the deadline was further away, but I’m going to lose anyway, so I don’t suppose it matters. :p

Is there only one winner for this? I was under the impression multiple entries would win (like in the MvC3 one).

Many thanks. :) I will be submitting something for sure. I'm just not sure as yet whether to submit a piece of my existing fan art or make something new for this.

11 x 17" is 3300 x 5100 pixels at 300 dpi... if we submit the files at this size the thread is going to be pretty stretched though...? >.>

@CaptainCortez

According to the rules info, it states there is only 1 winner, but I'm guessing there will be a shortlist or some backup entries chosen in case the winner can't be contacted to sign forms.

I'm wondering now if there will be some sort of bias toward Dante, or toward artwork with multiple characters in it... I was going to make something involving one of the lesser-drawn main characters, but maybe that isn't a good idea if there's only one winner.

Fonix
15-07-11, 14:02
Don't worry about the file size, the forum will automaticlly cut it down to someting more managable and then when the winners are picked we'll ask you to email us the full size piece.

There will be one winner from the UK, and France and Germany are doing their own version of the comp.

Hideaki Itsuno will be judging the comp btw! (He's the director of the Devil may Cry series)

CaptainCortez
15-07-11, 14:24
Well, that's awesome. At least I'll know my stuff was shown to him. :p

Oh Karl; One thing I will ask is could you possibly get Hideaki to comment on which ones he liked instead of just commenting on the winning entry alone, please?

It's always sad to see absolutely no comments on the rest of the entries. :(

I would like to compete, just be a part of it anyway but havin to make a picture that looks good on that scale .. it is impossible without graphical trainin, I mean I usually clear my pictures up pixel by pixel in Microsoft Paint, 3300x5100 or what it's like six full flat-screen sizes of pixels have come harmoniously together, i'd be stuck in a corner not gettn any where ....

I wish there was a serious and a casual competition, where the picture only had to be uh 550x850

also one has to have a pretty good computer and some serious software to handle pictures that big, and without bucketload of previous knowledge it is just not possible to get good results with new program no time ..

for a casual microsoft paintbrush user and capcom fan, this is very very disheartenin

I mean think of it, the picture is twice bigger than 1920x1080, that is my 32 inch flat-screen running full-res it is just staggerin one needs some serious skills beforehand to enter this competition, i kinda wish you wouldn't post it for casual fans to see ... little point it's frickin:redface::redface:

next time please don't make competitions where people gets hopes up, i really like makin fan art but the time needed to go over every pixel to make somethng that looks even semi-decent is so impossible it is.. just ...

I don't understand this completely, so you can enter if you are from different country, but your entry wil be ignored, or ... ?

And any reason why other countries aren't included in that list?

Greetings

probably there will be a prize as well and they want to keep postal costs within limits they can control that's very understandable

Well, I live in Belgium, that's literally in the middle of UK, France and Germany, so I don't think postal costs have anything to do with it.

Glad to see HairlikeDante's back with his awesome pictures. His image fits the style of DMC4 perfectly (or DMC in general). :)

I reckon there's going to be a flood of images turning up throughout the week, so it'll be awesome to see what people come up with. :D

The coolest part for me is that Itsuno-san will be looking at every image posted, so whether we're good or bad, our stuff will still be looked at.

It would be nice if we're given comments from him in regards to submissions that made him laugh, put him into shock and entries that he thought were awesome and wanted to comment on.

I think it looks fine matey. Just as long as the original is crisp in every way, it shouldn't matter.

Would be awesome to see it slightly bigger though. :p

Congrats once again though. I always like yours and Clay's entries. ;)

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much (you should know by my previous entries). :p

However, I am happy with the line art and sketchy animé feel I have going on with certain parts of it.

Need a mentor to teach me how to colour properly really, but hey, my perspective and anatomy is very slightly improving every time I do something.

I said to Clay that as much as I'd love to win this, I'm not expecting to as it's not realistic (I'm not being defeatist in saying this). I just really want to try and do something that represents my favourite gaming series of all time well.

After the competition, any pointers and help you might be able to offer for me to further improve (later down the line) would be hugely appreciated. ;)

Really looking forward to seeing all of the other entries.

Hey there... first post ever, the contest lured me here xD
I have a DMC-Fanart which I'd love to post... yet i fear that many people may not like it because its guy-slash. Still it's one of my best pieces so far *cough* Are fanarts like this even accepted?
I'm just asking in general. Right now I'm trying to finish something else... I'd so love to participate.
Greetings from Germany!

25-07-11, 14:46
Now the deadline has properly passed, thought I'd give a big shout out to everyone who entered. Good luck my lovelies, remember it's not the taking part that counts... no, hang on I got that wrong.

Anyhoo, there's some fricking awesome art in the submissions thread, especially mine! (this is a blatant attempt to Derren Brown the minds of the competition judges, who even if they realise, will now be sucked into a reverse psychological paradox whilst trying to decide of they aren't going to let me win just because I tried to warp their minds, rather than judging me purely on my art.

Man, if only this was an evil supervillian competition, I'd totally win that without the need to cheat.

Sorry, this was meant to be a sensible post.

GOOD LUCK!!

Lexehh
25-07-11, 17:57
Out of curiousness, I'm wondering when the judging will take place, whether it will be soon or a lot later in the year...? And whether we'll all get to find out who the winner was before the release of the game...?

Fonix
25-07-11, 18:38
I don't have concrete dates for when the winners will be announced but it'll be in due course, of course

Hey Fonix,

I've got a slightly nit-picky question for you about the contest...

I've just been checking out the Capcom US page to see if it was possible to get a heads up on the art submitted there (there isn't, so don't bother looking), whilst there I noticed on their competition rules it says there will only be one winner, but here it 'winners' has been mentioned a few times.

Just wondered which is correct.

Cheers

Fonix
27-07-11, 13:41
Different winners for the different countries - cause Europe has more countries than the US. So one from the UK, one from France and one from Germany. It's the same sort of thing we did for the MVC3 art comp.

monkelus
27-07-11, 13:51
Now that makes total sense.

Cheers dude... (now if only other people in the UK weren't better at drawing than me)
