View Full Version : What is your opinion on the underwater fights?
Seeing some vids on the new underwater system, i wonder what other people are thinking of it.
Any ideas, complains, suggestions?
the animations look really nice for it, still wondering exactly how it will play now that we have a third plane but from what ive seen looks very intresting and semi-believable

I really like the look of the underwater segments. I recall discussing water-based battles many moons ago and I was rather enamoured with the idea of battling Squid, Octopuses and the like.
I had been hoping Monster Hunter 3 would see the arrival of drivable canoes and boats(akin to the camps in MH:Dos.) yet that was not to be.
Personally i think it looks like interesting, tho something thats going to prove annoying (with having to monitor your air levels and constantly go up for air, especially if the monsters dont need too) but i won't judge it before i try it.

I believe they said you may remain underwater for up to ten minutes before needing to resurface for air, few monsters shall remain underwater for that amount of time - lest you are doing very little damage.
there will almost certainly be armour to extend that time anyway, though i hope there is an elder dragon or something that is always underwater otherwise i think it defeats the purpose of having the air meter if its only for parts of a battle, id like to say "brb getting some air" or something
i agree with you there, having to watch for your air gauge would be good on a fast monster or an elder dragon, since it would mean more challenge, just think of it like a dual wyvern quest, but instead of having to pay attention to one more wyvern, you have to remember to breathe!
makes complete sense and is an innovative way of challenging players.
I just wonder how restricted movement will be.
It would be ridiculous to just swing around a GS as swiftly underwater as you do in normal ground, however it needs to remain playable XD.

Cant tell yet, i saw it live at the TGS08 ( i wanted to play, but the croud was too big lol, would have waited for ages ), it looks cool but until i didnt try it i cant really say if i like it or not. But it will make the stages bigger, under and above water ^^
Tired of waiting for a plesioth? no frogs on you? going melee? just take a dive!

We can only hope that tackling it under its terms shall prevent the dreaded body-check. Otherwise known as: "Collision detection? Ha! I laugh in your face!"

I wonder if there will be any special underwater traps and bombs etc. Like a fishing net in which the monster gets stuck for like 10secs or so.
I like the idea its fresh but holding underwater for minutes isnt really realistic, I dunno maybe there will be equipment devices to hold longer underwater. it will be alot of fun thats what I think it will be

Heh and slaying Monsters/dragons is? not to mention talking cats. :p
MH1 was not realistic in regards to the fact you could stand within the mouth of a Volcano and not die of poisoning from varying noxious fumes, so MH3's water-based combat really is no different.

yea I guess your right its a game it doesnt need to be realistic. its just the fact that I like it so much that the underwater thing breathing just came to my mind.

I played the demo at TGS, so I guess I should talk a bit about it. It may change by the time it comes out, though, so don't take this as gospel.
Being underwater is basically exactly the same as being on the ground except you can move up and down as well. The movement speed is the same, the weapon attacks are the same. The amount of time it takes to run out of air is super lenient. I'd liken it more to drinking hot/cold drinks than coming up for air, actually, but I think that has to shorten. Maybe it'll be somewhere between that and taking armour seeds to stop a one-hit Fatalis kill in your almost-good-enough armour.
I was dreading it, because I've disliked every underwater section in videogaming ever, but Monster Hunter appears to have made things ok by basically ignoring the fact that water should slow you down :) I hope that doesn't change!

Thanks for the information, Leo. It is pleasing to hear that it remains faithful to the traditional Monster Hunter gameplay.

I want shark armour!
if that means the sharks are dead then SO DO I!
i wonder if they will incorporate something like wearing Iodrome armour (you know the one that makes you look freaking stupid) makes iodrome not attack you, would be cool, like the armour skill that gives a lower chance of being targeted (opposite of provocation, what ever its called)

what like it scares it off? if i were an iodrome id be angrier that u killed and skinned my buds only to wear it and look stupid. then agen if were an iodrome id hav to kill myself for being so annoying. although its been established im a yian garuga
no i mean, like it might mistake you for the same species or something and attack you less
lol yea, that would be funny!
does anyone have a link to a underwater fight gameplay? i would like to see it too... in what mh is it? what console?

Would anyone else care for some monsters of the deep? Imagine facing sea fables like Leviathan, Moby Dick or the Kraken from a sailing boat or canoe.

While even the idea of a Megalodon both fascinates and terrifies me - I would love to see one in MH.

go to youtube.com and type in something like underwater fighting monster hunter tri that should give you loads of videos
and underwater fighting is only in the upcomming game for the wii
and yea i love those beasts, well except the white whale... the hip check on that thing would be O_O
oh ok only for the wii... i cant imagine that those fights look "realistic"...
MHF is a game that makes me feel like those beasts really exist and you can go and hunt'em... but i think those fights would destroy this feeling... but as I have never seen any of the fights before... ignore my post ^^

Sadly not. It was merely the best scale-based image I could find. :p

That would be because it was a Shark. Think of it as one of the Great White's earliest ancestors(albeit, the size of a Whale.) Great Whites are arguably one of the most perfected creatures on this world and Megalodon reveals that their evolutionary design has barely altered over the millenniums.
A Liopleurodon would also be nice to see.

no it wouldn't i scared
I think the underwater fights add a new dimension to the Monster hunter games lol.
In terms of creatures i would love to be able to fight underwater would be a giant octopus, squid, shark, crab, stingray, jellyfish, snake, etc.
I don't know what underwater creatures you can fight in Monster hunter 3 but hopefully some of these creatures will feature in the game, if not then maybe Capcom can release them as downloadable content.
Liopleurodon is the most realistic as its a dinosaur and thus fits in perfectly with the game, but a megaladon quest similair to lao shan would be cool, and with a giant squid you could attack the tentaacles like shen gao ren's legs so dispite it being massive its actually rather easy to fight (easy to fight not easy to beat i would hope)
sorry for the double post i have a little update id like to share with you, ive noticed that the amount of time you can hold your breath depends on what weapon you are weilding, for example the greatsword had the meter running down rather quickly, but the sword and shield goes down really really slow, it may also depend on actions taken (or the armour skills but im fairly sure the armours are just skins and dont have different stats), but ive only had the demo a couple of days so il do a little digging
as for combat, ive only fought sharks and those herbivores, but the blood animation and the bubbles are really cool and it plays just the same as onland, third plane can be a bit fiddly at times when you are close to the surface but once your down deep it works well, there are also air bubbles (sonic style) that you can refill your air metre w/o going all the way to the surface for which is a nice balance
drop us a pm if you have any questions concerning the demo
