Proving you can't keep a good, albiet frilly series down, Capcom tonight revealed a fifth game in the Devil may Cry series, simply titled "DmC".
Not much was shown other than a fancy cinematic trailer, though we do know the game will star series favourite Dante, looking decidedly younger and more rebellious than we're accustomed to. And with...dark hair.
The game is being developed not by Capcom, but by Heavenly Sword creators Ninja Theory, confirming a rumour first floated all the way back in April (http://kotaku.com/5515819/heavenly-sword-devs-working-on-devil-may-cry-5). It's not entirely a "foreign" affair though, as three of Capcom's staff will be flying over and working with the British developers on the game.

What do you guys make of the character?
Looking at the more western and gritty style, I anticipate a more serious vibe throughout the game, which might be good.
However, I'm not sure I love the appearance of the character~ It looks a little bit "emo vampire" to me.

I'm not going to be polite in any way: THIS LOOKS [No swearing. You can get your point across without swear words. TZM] AWFUL! Please for the love of God, Allah, Buddha, Odin, whoever else, tell me this isn't real? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO DANTE YOU INBREDS!?

Copy/pasting my response from the other thread:
A reboot is hardly what anyone needs or even wants. It could possibly be Nero's backstory? After all DMC4 didn't tell us a thing about him.
Whoa! What the...I don't even....
I shouldn't judge but Lord, that's not Dante...please be his son, relative, something! Again, I shouldn't judge (but I kinda am....) but, this is seeming even more like a disaster.
Quote:
"This 'Devil May Cry DNA' remains but is now injected with a dark and brutal gameplay that promises to redefine the franchise."
What does this mean!? Tearing off limbs GoW style or something? Do not want....
oy vay...
But yeah, I see this "Dante" and I think of some teen Vampire thing ie. Twilight. Do not want...the design looks good but it just isn't Dante.
To be totally honest, fans have come to expect a certain charm, class, substance and finesse from DMC. Guess who've managed to take it all and run? Platinum Games (no surprise) with their Bayonetta. Not saying this DMC won't have it but it's basically a sign of where DMC kind of needs to head. So far, this Twilight extra is walking the other way...
oh and smoking? He's too cool already.

Although I've never been a huge fan of the DMC games...I'm not pleased with the new look for Dante.
The red coat and white hair is the main symbol of DMC & Dante. You think of Dante, and that's what you think of...
I severely hope this is just a stand-in model, or that the Capcom staff will ask Ninja Theory to change it back...

Ok, I'm not going to lie; that trailer was nicely done and the combat looks pretty crazy. Unfortunately, this still isn't going to justify this awful situation.
It's Dante in his teens... the game is still very DMC. Didn't you guys have a bad haircut when you were younger?! The Dante gamers are familiar with is one that understands and embraces his powers, using them to dispatch enemies assuredly, with style and a trademark wisecrack. Taking a young Dante allows us to introduce a raw, more visceral combat fuelled by powers that he is yet to comprehend or have control over.
For those of you concerned while Ninja Thoey are creating the game they will be working with a team at Capcom that contains a number of staff that have worked on previous Devil May Cry titles, including Hedaaki Itsuno who has been involved in all four, who are there to ensure that the Devil May Cry DNA continues.

Dunno if its just me, but that video isn't working.
And as far as I'm concerned, if thats the new Dante, then I'm done with DMC altogther. Its long been one of my favourite series and I've got them all to date, even rebought for the special editions, but if these screens are anything to go by, they've already butchered it and I have no interest or want to see any more.

See, this makes total sense. I guess this would be the lead up to the emergence of the wisecracking Dante we saw in DMC3 who was in his late teens?
Can you confirm that this is part of the canon set by the previous games? As in, this would fit entirely within the overall storyline where Sparda is still his dad, Vergil is still his brother, Eva is still his mother who was killed, etc.?
Ryu Kazama
15-09-10, 13:18
^That. Gotta know if it's canon and set in the same universe. None of this different dimension nonsense....
Trailer was good. For something non-DMC. But that aint Dante...
So, assuming this is not a reboot then it's set before DMC3. So...maybe he has issues fitting in school...?
Carbonox_Ratchet
15-09-10, 13:23
Maybe he died his hair black and had a haircut to escape from being noticed by demons? Sure, he still goes after them and whatnot, but perhaps he wanted to distance himself from his father so he won't be specifically targeted like his mother and father?
Wow, I can't believe you guys are actually trying to come up with an excuse for why this new game looks so awful. Dante was in his late teens in 3. Aside from the different hair and lack of red coat, facially he looks nothing like Dante. It looks like a *ahem* game with the names "DMC" and "Dante" slapped on it after the work was done. But that is not Dante. That is some other hipster *ahem* character designed to fit in with teeny-bopper fashion and idols.
I repeat; THAT IS NOT DANTE.
THAT IS NOT DANTE
Dante doesn't smoke and what the Hell did they with his hairs and his red coat
Western Style ? LOOOOOL. Its Junkie Style !

Actually, he does have silver hair. Whether it's the silver coming through or black dye growing out, that needs to be confirmed but he clearly has silver hair. Thought it was dodgy lighting at first (early NT games have had it during previews).
Yoh: The trailer was decent. BUT it still isn't DMC to me and many, many others. I have only seen a few smatterings of positive comments from places like Eurogamer, Siliconera and Kotaku. Right now, this whole thing is taking a backlash...no surprise. Saying this, it really is too early to judge meaningfully.
Right now the way I see it, he is less than 19, so pre DMC3, therefore no real powers. He CAN have some heightened abilities but nothing extreme. It'd mess with the canon. At this point he could also be struggling to fit in to general society. School, friends, etc. But really, all this could've been done as a book or comic or anime. A game is a waste. One prequel at a young age is enough, honestly. What next, DMC when he's 5? I'm saying all this assuming it's canon of course. Let's wait and see...

Capcom should learn to withhold information and take a page out of Activisions & Infinity wards book, because JESUS H CHRIST that should be illegal.
There are major problems with this "Dante"
Overall to sum him up, he's a malnourished crackhead, scrap this shamble excuse for a character, if this is the western look and feel these game developers talk about i feel insulted, pro-tip do more research.
p.s capcom, drop ninja theory, make your own games, you seem to do a better job than them.
Devil May Cry is dead if this game goes retail.
You can't defend how hard they've messed up the entire point of the DMC series, it is simply not possible.
This won't even work if you call it a reboot. This could only be a completely different game series. Its as if you took the Prince of Persia and sent him to Scotland and made him a golfer.
Ryu Kazama

I'm dubbing this game "Backlash" for the time being...DMC: Backlash...
You know though, this could be the best in the series...could be!
People are signing up to Ninja Theory's own forum just to rant...Like I said before "Oy vay".
I Suggest you all stay vocal but be constructive, if any side has common sense in this, they will take aboard our feedback, what are they going to make of "THATS NOT DANTE HE LOOKS LIKE TWILIGHT LOLOLOLOL"?
Its early stages for this game yet, and hopefully it will undergo changes if we voice our opinions properly.
I Suggest you all stay vocal but be constructive,
Over the years I've seen many video game forums (including this one) and DMC fan sites with threads discussing what they would like to see in another DMC game. Allot of us (myself included) going into plenty of detail about what would be great. If that's not constructive, I don't know what is. I can't see a single redeeming feature in this trailer that I could build a constructive criticism on. Judging on what I've seen so far, my only advice is to just scrap the game completely and start over.
Also, to the mods: sorry for swearing earlier. I mad. VERY mad.

Someone asked Hideki Kamiya (creator of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, etc.) what he thought of "DmC" compared to Bayonetta and his response was simply: "Whatever."
Says it all.

I am not working for capcom and it is not the fact that I am an ultimate fan of DMC and Capcom in general (alongside Megaman and Resident Evil), this is so very 100% true you say... . Plus the fact where are the people that cried all the time over and over again; I want a DARK NEW DMC GAME THAT IS SIMILAR TO DEVIL MAY CRY 1 year 2001? This is the Dante I know from the previous 4 games! [What is it with all of you? The rules are clear NO SWEARING. TZM] GOOD JOB CAPCOM and NINJA THEORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JIHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nobody asked for dark and moody like Twilight or whatever! They asked for Darker in atmosphere. Toooootttallly different. Dante was still a humerous, annoying (to the demons) bad ass but the atmosphere was dark and "heavy". Here...we get a moody, Twilight extra. Not what anyone really wants.
Platinum crew who worked on previous DMC are either laughing their butts off or crying at what is looking like a disaster for something they made awesome.

Only two opinions over the other I have:
Dante NEVER! NEVER NED TO SMOKE IN ORDER TO LOOK COOL. Dante IS cool and NEVER SMOKED.
Ninja Theory need to make their character a smoker to make it looks cool? Their wrong, smoking IS NOT cool.
And it is slow like a walrus.

II ARROWS:
Ordinarily, I wouldn't care but simply because you fully showed your intent to not cover it up or be less vulgar, you're getting an infraction. I'll be posting this on the forum in public so all are aware...
This will apply to EVERYONE! Most of us mods are pretty leniant but if you're gonna blatantly show your intent to swear and be foolish, you won't get away with it. Soooo simple! Not gonna go into this any further on this topic.
Back to DMC- sorry "DmC", I'm like a broken record here but, like I said, too early to judge but here's one theory:
He's about 16 or 17. He knows his leniage and so do others. He's actually not a moody chump we might assume but actually, the cool kid. The popular one (in a good way!). The one who, at school, was a clown but teachers admired him too, he helped out the weak lot and so on. Only now, he's got himself in trouble with some official people for being different, hence the torture like scene.
Sounds weak the way I wrote it but work with me here, I'm on empty stomach...not much energy, ha!
Even with that theory I still think an anime short would've be way better...

At that age, as well as being an orphan, I'm not surprised that Dante would go to these extremes to try and find meaning for his life (or otherwise act like a rebel). I guess over the course of the game, he gradually finds meaning before becoming THE Dante that demons fear all over.

Funny how you say "protagonist". Not ready to accept it as Dante yet? This is gonna take some time, hehe.
Keep forgetting to mention, why's he got red eyes? Silver hair, sure (but to what extent) but red eyes? Dante doesn't have red eyes.
So far he reminds me more of Nero than Dante just because of the costume colours but even Nero didn't have red eyes until he got vexed.
my theory is that it's a crazy guy who is in the madhouse and thinks it's dante

As almost everyone has said. This looks fun. This is not Devil May Cry.
Really I think it should've been something different. It's clearly not something we want as a DMC game.

As already many fans told, it is not Devil May Cry. If THIS comming game would be called differently and had nothing common with DMC (Like "Dante" name) it would be allright.
Second option for developers is to make classic Dante. That would be easier and better for fans and other players.
And I swear that I will not play in new DMC if anything that I told about, would not be changed.
Sincerly DMC Fan
P.S. And THIS is real Dante
Horrible...really...... I'm speechless...
This is NOT Dante! and we don't need any awful remake...
The game seems good and very interesting, but you really can't call it DMC, nor you can call that emo vampire guy Dante...
I will not buy that thing, I wanted to buy the collector's edition of Devil May Cry 5, but now my heart is broken...
I'm a western girl, if I buy a japanese game, is because I want see pretty faces characters... No lil ugly misfits kids... That boy seems come out from the manga Fortifield School :flamesangry:
*sighs*
CAPCOM, I do not care what you do, if you want make an odd remake, do it.
But, while you make this bizarre game, please, PLEASE, make also a Devil may cry 5 with Dante and Nero with che usual graphic design style!
And accept a lil suggestion, smoking is not cool, you already have a character who drink strongdrink and have a poor diet, but his liver regenerates, so ok.. but you you want give to him also cigarettes?Maybe sono heroine and cocaine why not...
You have betrayed Dante and you have betrayed all the Devil May cry fans!
OMG Capcom please change Dante back to the orignal or atleast to nero ... as far as I know this has nothing to do with the original Dante, Other than his name is Dante, If you look all over the web you will find a lot of people who agree with me..
I loved the DMC series played the hell out of them all but im a bit 'iffy' on this one. Its just put me off!

I'm just reminded by the article I posted on this board a while back regarding Inafune-san wanting fan feedback for any next Devil May Cry title...
Yeah. That's what I thought. You want fan feedback? You got thousands of it all over the 'net. 99% aren't accepting it, whether or not they have calmed down from initial reactions.
Yeah, thats what prompted me to urge people to be vocal, but constructive, and I've totally been ignored bar one person.

I have read pretty much every post in this thread, and if all you have to bitch about is that you don't like the new look of Dante, then what's the real issue here?
To me the combat in the trailer looked fluid, fast and nasty. So I am hoping that they stick with it. Yes changing Dante's look was probably a mistake, but an easily rectified one.

my theory is that it's a crazy guy who is in the madhouse and thinks it's dante
Could be. But it'd be too obvious, no? For all we know, it could actually be true and then BOOM! real Dante crashes the scene and is all "Hey, kid! Nursery is thata way!" and proceeds to finish the business his way, as we expect it.
I can't recall properly but back when DMC4's Nero was revealed there was a fair bit of discussion going on there. Ok, so less ranting than 2010 but they didn't explicitly say who Nero was, what his role was, how he fits in etc. All took a little bit of time...some of it still being unconfirmed, ha!
It's pretty obvious though what most feedback is - negative. Even those with a passing interest are showing their dismay, whilst naturally some couldn't care and are open to it. I guess it's time to make the comparison with Mario (not the same league but might as well be). Imagine messing with that formula/character too much. Hell would break loose. Or, Mickey Mouse. Epic Mickey is pretty different but still manages to stay relatively true to Mickey (don't know really since I haven't played it).
*sigh* I think I'll leave this as my last DmC post for today...tomorrow is a brand new day. Maybe even with a brand new Dante......
...one more thing...could be Nero's backstory...orphan, similar colours/threads...Kyrie and The Order being what fixed him up (ie. no smoking, respectable etc)...Black dye to cover his "oddness" only to bust out with a demon arm later on...! Why he calls himself Dante? Could be explained later, though we know he isn't really aware who Dante truly is. Ah! So many possibilities.
OKAY! I'm done for today!

I honestly don't know what to say about this, it's the worst idea Capcom have ever had.
For a long time a new Onimusha has been my most wanted game, but after seeing this I hope they don't make a new one in case they ruin it like this.
Will Capcom actually see these posts? If not I want to know where I can make myself heard. I don't care how good the gameplay is, this is not Devil May Cry, it has to change.
To me the combat in the trailer looked fluid, fast and nasty.Fluid? The old tetris is fluid. This is slow.

I honestly think the trailer was not bad as a generic game. Heck, reskin it has true Dante and it's still good. It's the simple fact that aint Dante. Apart from those obvious issues it looked pretty cool.

ok so like this things might be understood..if the game names is Devil May Cry "DNA" then that explains the little talk we heard during the video...seems the guy that is captured is not dante but someone else and they brainwashed him?making him believe that he is dante,or putting some dante's dna with him,or last h is dante at hs 18's or something before becomin a demon=black hair...besides in the video u can still see some white hair in this guy back in the head...so maybe when we will reach the final moments of dantes adventures h will have those hairs white again^^
I'm demoralized by this game, this is absolutly not Dante !

Let's hope Capcom/Ninja Theory take a leaf out of Sucker Punch's book and change Dante in to a more familiar model. I'm still down with this revised take on an origins story and part of the design (rough, hobo look) but the hair is in dire need of a change. Sucker Punch were decent enough to listen to the fans and change Cole's original model for inFamous in to something more recognisable and suitable.
Also, I'm surprised folks haven't brought up the crucial frame-rate issue. Ninja Theory games are renowned (even Enslaved has these issues) for poor frame-rate and input lag. For a franchise as well-tuned and with perfect response as Devil May Cry, this would be unforgivable. If this uses the Unreal Engine then you're guaranteed a shockingly poor game with no way around the issue.
Aside from the different hair and lack of red coat, facially he looks nothing like Dante. It looks like a *ahem* game with the names "DMC" and "Dante" slapped on it after the work was done. Agreed! it looks like the same gameplay (minus the sword) but with a bad boy character. was ninja theory in danger of getting sued for ripping off Devil may cry so agreed to license the game to avoid unaffordable law suits? (it has happened before, see the ds/psp's bloodbowl game!) why is he smoking!!!!! it looks nothing like him and it's totally out of character! given how dreadful ninja theories games are as well, it better turn out not to be cannon so capcom can forget it happened and go back to the real dante.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening was Dante in his teens. This is not. Is this another prequel, or a "reboot" to the series? Either way, Ninja Theory as well as Capcom has dropped the ball on this.
Go ahead, put this game out. It will sell horribly. Do you know what will happen after that? Capcom will axe the series and blame gamers.
Same thing happened to the Breath of Fire series, which is an utter shame.
I want to contribute more on the subject: why does the series need a reboote anyway? Theyr not that old or unsuccesfull, and besides there is still BUNCH of stuff that could be covered in the existing universe, there is material for atleast 4 more games, some of them I can come up with right now. This game is just unnecesary and blocks space for something MUCH better and actually wanted. Also, I feel kinda offended as an western games, THIS IS NOT what I want to see. This.... just isnt Dante.

Part of the story will reveal why only a part of Dante's hair is white.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening was Dante in his teens. No, he wasn't. Dante was already a 1000 year half demon, since he met Lady, and she is in DMC4 cutscenes so AFTER DMC1 when he met Trish, which is 1000 years after Sparda sacrifice.

I take it you didn't actually play the games.
Sparda defeated Mundus, sealed him and all of his little Backstreet Boy groupies in the demon realm, dicked around with the tower in DMC3, sealing those groupies away as well. Afterwards for the next 2,000 years he messed around in the human world, taking a brief couple hundred or so years to rule over Fortuna/seal another gateway to Hell. Fortuna being the city in DMC4, hence why the Order of the Sword worships him as a God.
Sometime after that, he met Dante & Virgils mum, played horizontal hockey with her, had the kids, played daddy then died before they were even eight years old.

Wut. He was only 18/19 in Devil May Cry 3. No where in a single ounce of media or canonical writing is it even referenced that Dante has the lifespan of a standard demon.
You only need to listen to what's said in the games to get an indication. 20 years prior to Devil May Cry, he lost his mother when he was young. This was 10 years prior to the Devil May Cry 3 manga, as well. I'll need to whip them out again but I believe there are pictures of the bros when they were kids to back this up.

Actually, you are wrong here. It was stated that once Sparda sealed off the demons (Mundus included), he was trapped with them because he was a demon himself. And Order workship him as God-like figure for saving the world, he never had a chance to rule over anything -_-

It's been mentioned so many times, he's 19 in DMC3. Which is why another game in his past is kind of pointless since that was when his powers awoke. DMC4 he's in his 40's. So 1000's of years? A bit shy of that, I'm afraid. Just a bit.
I never seen or heard of Dante's age in DMC3... what's your source?
My source is DMC1 intro's, who talks about 2000 years (Not 1000 like I remembered) from the war. DMC3 told that Sparda was sealed on the demon world in order to close Temen Ni Gru.
Dante is half demon, he could not be immortal like a demon (or he could), but can surely live longer than a human, 2000 years could be like 20 human years...
Lady is human, he can't live much long and since she didn't aged so much from 3 to 4, I say that cannot be passed more than 15 years from these chapters, and DMC1 is somewhere in this period because Dante already knows Trish in DMC4. DMC2 could even been set before 3 or after 4, doesn't even care because Trish is not in the game, and Lucia never showed up in any other games.
Dante's mother was human, (DMC3 Arkham explains that a human was used to seal Temen Ni Gru and that is Virgil and Dante mother) so she died much time before any game...
Oh, and I can't tell the difference between the pictures posted by Acid Burn

Are you being sarcastic about the differences, haha?
I actually can't remember the source. Could be the manual (not at home to check) though quite sure Capcom confirmed it anyway, but it is widely known he is around 19 years old, with Vergil being the older twin.
It goes like this:
Eva "dies" when twins are kids (apparently around 8 years)
DMC manga (never finished so could've added more)
DMC3
20 years after Eva's death is DMC1 ("You're the one who lost a mother and a brother 20 years ago, the son of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda.....")
DMC4, where APPARENTLY he's in his 40's according to Kobayashi
Finer details are sketchy though. On one hand Eva is killed by Mundus' minions and the other it's implied she is used as a sacrifice.

It Hurts me to say this but Capcom went from making Devil may cry 1 + 3 perfection to Devil May Cry 4 which i didnt like much but i accept it looked really good, nice cut scenes and had cool music but wasn't all that to play with basic system for basic people but i could dig it to play but its a shame that breaks my heart that Capcom have given one of the best games and characters in video game history Dante to a company called Ninja Theory or something like that turning the game and the charter in to a skinny, drug addict with no swagger, no style looking madded PG. I'm going to say is Ive been following Devil May Cry for ten years from day one and if anyone who's into Devil May Cry even try's to say one good thing about it this wasteness which i refuse to acknowledge as DMC its not even a shadow its former self, dont know anything about DMC A real fan with any sense cant support this because capcom are not being serious destroying the pride of fans by doing this to dante and turning him into a reduntant retarded drug addict

Bingo.
The DMC3 manga has scenes that took place 10 years before Devil May Cry 3 where he was a 9 year old child, with Devil May Cry 3 itself taking place 10 years before Devil May Cry.
Your sources, II ARROWS, do not even remotely hint at a thousand year old lifespan for Dante. Again, there is zero evidence to support such a ludicrous assumption.

You said that Dante's mother died 10 years before Virgil...
So, that phrase specify that both of them died contemporary... No, they didn't.

Son, I am dissapoint.
Since it is considered a legend, the end of the war, and the born of the twins and logically the death of their mother (since was just human) must be many many years ago, sufficient to erase it the memory of people. 2000 declared in the first game are sufficient.

II ARROWS, stop trying to read between lines and reach in the dark. There is no indication at all that Dante is over 1000 years old. Read the manga, take note of what's specifically said in the games that pertain to Dante, not Sparda.
Anyway, I found this on another forum:

Ew, I actually don't like that image. I get the point but well, I'm probably saying ew since it's just a shopped thing..or the face is still not right? Indication is good, however!
II ARROWS, I think you're confusing Dante and Sparda. We're talking about Dante's age. Sparda's powers were sealed away, yes. Doesn't mean HE was physically sealed. He met Eva, got it on, had twins. Where he went and what he did we don't know. Could've become a farmer for all we know. But yes, he was around for thousands of years, probably for him being a demon. Dante may well be ABLE to live just as long but right now it's apparent he ages like any human. He might peak at a point, it's pretty common in fiction. We don't know that though. So, for the time being he is 30+ in HUMAN years (or in his 40's, gosh this needs clearing up).
What I should also add in according to his powers being sealed, he still has the genetics of a demon so Dante/Vergil getting them isn't impossible.
As for Trish's quote, "....mother and brother to evil 20 years ago...." No one said Vergil died. Eva's death is legit. She's dead. Vergil was never confirmed dead exactly like in DMC1 he's never confirmed truly dead when you beat him. What exactly happened to him, noone knows yet. Maybe he did die and came back, maybe he appeared dead, maybe he was literally taken! Just like a lot of things, his part isn't clear either.

Why a reboot ?
Dante and Nero are perfect characters ...
I have an idea about the storyline; "This person thinks to be Dante but he isnt him; thats why the person outside the room always say What is your name? and the real Dante has something "to do"? Am I maybe correct about this?

Nobody asked for dark and moody like Twilight or whatever! They asked for Darker in atmosphere. Toooootttallly different. Dante was still a humerous, annoying (to the demons) bad ass but the atmosphere was dark and "heavy". Here...we get a moody, Twilight extra. Not what anyone really wants.
Platinum crew who worked on previous DMC are either laughing their butts off or crying at what is looking like a disaster for something they made awesome.

Okay guys, I saw on the Ninja Theory forums that one of the mods didn't seem opposed to the idea of a poll. So, I did a few hair designs of my own. The first two are more punky, but the second is two tone, as I get the impression NT and Capcom want Dante to have some form of black hair. These are both rough, but give you an idea of ways Capcom and NT could take him.
Then, we have the last attempt which came out better than I had hoped, and as such, I prefer it. Anyway, see what you guys think. I worked a bit harder on the third one, and crossed the punk and mod styles together.

Now that I'm quite keen on seeing a rough Dante coming to grips with the life that he is bound to have ahead of him, as well as this game being an origins story, I don't want a copy and paste job of his previous models. I'd like him to be recognisable as Dante but not in a way that he looks identical to his other models. Maybe keep the short hair (but rough it up a bit) but add more white and less black. Very few people ever keep the same hairstyle from a young age to their mid-life ages.
Cortez, if you could, try a more cropped hairstyle. I want to see what it would look like.

But aren't a lot of teenages? Not being stereotyping here but most people from early teens to late teens are whiny due to them thinking they are adults but not.
It's part of the rebellious stage as well which makes them whiny.
Not saying all are like that but i would go with well over 50 % of teens.;)

Well, is this any good? You said cropped, so I did three versions working with their original design. The first image has more fringe added on the left, the second image has black under white, and looks like the white fades out to the black (I quite like it, and it keeps the blackness NT seem to like), and the third is just an all white cropped cut.

Funny thing is, I don't think the hair style itself is that bad. I've seen lots of cool people with it. One sided long fringe is pretty standard these days. I see a lot of Hong Kong people with it, though. Take that however you will?

Your third picture is something I'd settle for in the game. Maybe a tad more black like in the second to indicate that he's tried to get rid of the white hair to make him less noticeable but otherwise I'm keen on it. Hopefully something small like this will be accepted by Capcom. Here, he's more recognisable as Dante. As it stands in the official artwork, he's not recognisable.
CaptainCortez
18-09-10, 16:07
Hmm, I don't like it too much, but I could re-colour that as well at some point if you want?
The latest ones I did aren't that far off from it anyway. Also, regarding hairstyles, these look like alright ones to try out:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6OYuvg7KyNQ/S-G-5dbAsQI/AAAAAAAAAY8/qXDEQNshFUw/s1600/Short+Layers+Crop+Hairstyle.jpg
Edit: Carb, where would you put the blackness, as I want to try and do what the community likes. That way Capcom and Ninja Theory may take a little more notice, as I could then post these options on their forums, but make a nice post, because as it is, I don't know if I'm hugely disrespecting them by changing his hair.
Anyways, if you've got a sec, just circle the area's you'd like to see blackened. :)
there is definitely a whisp of silver roots there in his hair! i hope to god that this turns out to be a high school age dante rebelling and discovering his powers. i will give them the benefit of the doubt until more is revealed but if this does prove to be some re imaging of the character i'm going to be very annoyed and not buy it! When resi got a reboot (which it needed, does dmc?) they kept the characters (namely leon) the same in terms of personality and just changed the gameplay style. i wouldn't mind if thats all they did with DMC but why mess with a character that has built an established and passionate fan base!?
I spotted this on kotaku and lol'd...

As much as it saddens me, that was actually somewhat amusing. Seriously though, the design for the character model itself is fine. It's just the hair which bothers me.
I really wish Capcom used MT Frameworks for this though, or at the very least, gave the series back to Hideki Kamiya to play around with. However, it's not going to happen. :(
I really want to see how the game will turn out, because at the minute, it's not looking good, and I don't know if I'm ready to accept another bad Devil May Cry (after 2).
I just hope things improve, and the game actually turns out to be something spectacular.
I actually think the trailer looks really cool. Of course, trailers aren't always representative of the games themselves, but this one's certainly interesting.
In terms of Dante's new look... I have absolute faith in Capcom, that they have assessed this really carefully and think it's fine. I'm just curious as to how Dante turns from that, into that.

I am gonna buy this game on launch day when it release but I have a lot of questions straight towards Ninja Theory... .
1. Will this game run at 30 or 60 or 120 Frames per second?
2. Is it Unreal Engine or MT Framework or some other engine?
3. Will we see Dante ever in the game with white hair or something familiar?
4. When you go all through the game will there be an extra like DLC or his original fightning styles or weapons from the previous games?
5. If familiar faces reappear will they also a have en rebooted look (Vergil, Trish etc.)
6. Will there be an DirectX 11 PC version?
7. Will it be in 3D with or without glasses? (NVidia 3D or red/cyan)
8. On which Native Resolution will it run? (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p)
9. Is this Devil May Cry 5 or is this a spin-off subseries?

3. They said the Dante shown may not be the one we see by the end game. If they're smart, then yes, we will see normal Dante. If not, ooo boy!
4. If they're smart and go with tradition. Loved how DMC3 had Dante's DMC1 outfit.
5. Common sense would say yes. But maybe they won't even bother with other characters too much in fear of butchering those too?
10. Noooo. Allow multiplayer for DMC. Unless it's Doppleganger stuff (or co-op with some other character), anything more expansive doesn't fit in so well. Plus either the single player will be wishy washy or the "awesome multiplayer" will be.
11. Nope. The developer interviews so far confirm that the story hasn't been done yet.
You'll get better answers from Ninja Theory but some of the stuff asked is fairly common sense or mentioned briefly already. Either way it's early days so don't expect much yet.

Only multiplayer I would accept is something similar to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's team missions mode. Separate challenges that get harder as you go along. Can be done on your own (if you're crazy) or with a partner. Doesn't affect single player at all and is really enjoyable. Adds a ton of replay value. I think even Team Ninja are aware that this is the best format for action multiplayer. Deathmatch-style modes just wouldn't work whatsoever. Best to keep it co-op.

I'm interested in this title. Hopefully it will answer how dante's hair turned white. Personally I think this game could go places as it will be exposed to a new generation of gamers who missed this title on the PS2. ( I literally don't mean this title just the DMC that was released on PS2 )

Sorry, there are a lot that I cannot answer (to be clear, when I say “I” I am referring to Ninja Theory, as oppose to “I personally” cannot answer)
Here are the ones I can answer:
2. Is it Unreal Engine or MT Framework or some other engine?
It will be powered by Unreal Engine.
3. Will we see Dante ever in the game with white hair or something familiar?
If you look closely at the trailer you will see that he has a patch of white hair.
9. Is this Devil May Cry 5 or is this a spin-off subseries?
This is neither DmC 5 nor a spin off. It is a retelling of Dante’s origin story.
Hey all,
I really don't get it why the hair is all that people talk about.
It wasn't just the hair or even the character, the trailer was 100% complete trash.

It's definitely powered by the Unreal engine? Congrats Capcom, the game is already a complete technical failure. No way of dodging that fact. The engine cannot maintain or hold a game of Devil May Cry's caliber. I was starting to warm up to DmC but you've just brought that hope back down to rock bottom. No sugar-coating will EVER cover the fact that Unreal is a horrendously generic engine, nor will it EVER cover the fact that the game will run like garbage with poor frame-rate.
You just shot yourself in the foot. Again, here's another congratulations.

I'll sum up the video:
"Change is good!....erm.....erm....you need to play the demo!....erm.....erm...."
Whether its a good game or not, I don't know, but I'm certain that the fan response isn't being handled correctly and I'm not exactly assured by this.
I'm certain that the fan response isn't being handled correctly and I'm not exactly assured by this.
It should, 'cause we are the ones who paid to make the game big. Last year or so, Stallone intentionally leaked some plans about a pretty radically changed Rambo 5. The response was overwhelmingly negative and some months later Stallone announced there wasn't going to be a next Rambo.
It was pretty obvious he heard the fanbase reaction. Ninja Theory isn't.
Given that devil may cry is a relatively niche title with a small but dedicated fan base! alienating that fan base for the chance of maybe gaining some mainstream acceptance seems a very big risk!
I wouldn't say DMC has a small fan base. It sells better than Mega Man. It would be more successful than Mega Man if they didn't pump out a million games all the time. Also DMC 4 saw a rise in sales compared to DMC 2 and 3, so the fan base was rising.
actually, ninja theories latest game, enslaved, has just got a decent review in edge. maybe there is hope!
I've actually heard some bad things about Enslaved. Such as the game basically walks you through the entire game itself (it's super easy). Stuff like, whenever you're climbing or whatever and a whole bunch of hazards are around, they're actually NOT hazardous to yourself, as you can't be hit by anything while platforming. And the only way to jump is to go to a predetermined spot that'll let you jump to the next platform at a 100% success rate.
I've also heard stuff like the frame rate is slow (like in the demo), as well as the game play. You can also use the basic attack (Triangle, Triangle, Triangle) and beat the game without varying at all, minus one particular boss which is also easy to beat through spamming something else. And there's some screen tearing and other glitches. I read somewhere that someone experienced cut scenes with the characters talking... only they weren't in the actual cut scene (it glitched and you couldn't see the characters).
I wouldn't be too hopeful if I were you.

It won't be the MT as that only seems to be used by In house developement teams, With games being out sourced i doubt these will use the MT.
Unreal is the wrong engine to use along with Ninja Theory.
I think Enslaved looks perfectly fine. It does have some really amazing environments. The only problem I can see is the shadows. I'm not really familiar with how the shaders for this engine works, but they're pretty pixelated. Yes, there is a filter which smooths them slightly, but I thought it was too noticable.
Either way, I do think Ninja Theory should be able to make a fun Devil May game. Will it be the best in the series? That I don't know, but I'm sure it'll be an enjoyable experience.
Having played Enslaved, I can sort of imagine how their take on the series would be like. I really do think Ninja Theory can pull this one off.
edge gave enslaved a fairly decent score and they are quite unforgiving. although if what freyt has heard about enslaved its true then it sounds as though NT are having trouble overcoming the problems that plagued heavenly sword!

I had no problems whatsoever when I played the final build of the PS3 version (apart from the previously mentioned shader issues). Yes, it was easy (I did think that standing in the middle of a wall of fire would at least hurt me) but then many games have managed to be brilliant despite their easiness (Kirby series, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.)
There are all sorts of issues you could bring up, but that doesn't stop the game from being enjoyable. Just look at Deadly Premonition!
Either way, these factors aren't exacly an indicator of what DmC will be like. I'm sure Capcom are keeping a close eye on everything.

Well, I don't think they'd want to cut their fanbase off completely, so I'm sure they'll be doing something for previous fans, but it's definitely caused an uproar.
I'm hoping things will start to look up over the next year or two, because they're still about that far away from releasing anything new (I know as I spoke to Leo about it on saturday).
I still can't believe that Dante would look like that, and when I first saw the trailer, I actually felt physically sick. This is a strange reaction but when something disheartens you that much, it kinda saps all of your hopes away with it. I can't watch the trailer again, because to me, it just doesn't feel at all like Devil May Cry. However, I'm still willing to give it a chance. I just don't want his look to stay like that for long (if it has to at all), and I certainly don't want that picture on the front cover......unless he has white hair again.
Anyway, I know it's using the Unreal engine, but to be honest, it might not matter too much. I say this because companies often pay to use an engine, and then tweak it to do other things. Usually this is to tailor it to a specific game/genre, so lag might be avoided, but as it stands, the company still has a way to go. Enslaved certainly isn't lag free, as fun as it may actually be (I quite liked the demo).
So, all we can do until a year or two down the line is hope.......hope that it turns out well, and plays seamlessly.
I loved xmen origins but it was laggy as hell! as ig gears of war. it would be better if they used something like havok for the physics and built the rest around that!
As far as I know, Unreal Engine is free, just like a lot of other engines that came from John Carmack.
At least, that's the rationality I used to... rationalize why all these western developers always use the Unreal Engine.
UE3 isn't free to actual development studios, just very small teams and individuals (where a specific royalties arrangement exists for anything that goes to retail). Like the iD Tech stuff it's licensed middleware: you pay for the license to use the tech to reduce development costs. It's everywhere right now because there're few competing middleware platforms for HD development - and iD Tech 5 (the RAGE engine) is now being limited to in-house projects at Bethesda. Where you got mixed up is that after the completion of a new iD Tech iteration (4 replacing 3, say), iD releases the source code. None of this stuff is free while it's cutting edge, though older middleware can still hold up pretty well - the Infinity Ward engine is heavily modified iD Tech 4, for instance.
There are good and bad games that use UE3; what matters is quality of implementation. Ninja Theory's in Enslaved is actually pretty poor because they care more about having a lot going on in the background than about stable framerates or responsive controls. This will probably be a trend they continue into DmC. It certainly won't be hitting 60fps on consoles like the other games, that requires additional work and technical expertise NT don't have. Expect it to run at 24fps ("it's cinematic") when nothing is happening, and sub-20 whenever combat kicks off. And a PS3 port riddled with problems, same as Enslaved.
Basically, I don't think Ninja Theory can make a good Devil May Cry game. I'm not convinced they can turn out a good game period; all their previous efforts get marks for the presentation and art direction, not for how they play. Haven't seen a single review of Enslaved that claims the interactive parts are any good - they're purposefully dumbed down so that you can be led by the hand to the next cutscene. That's why platforming is "wiggle the stick and press jump" - if it was a puzzle or if it were possible to fail, you could get stuck and lose interest in the story. Their creative priorities simply don't mesh with the style of game DMC is and frankly, they're a massive money hole for publishers with their emphasis on expensive mocap. Giving this franchise to them was a mistake.

Hey guys, just wanted to mention that if you really want your opinion heard, then post your thoughts on Capcom's latest games here. (http://www.capcom-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67252)

Keiji Inafune, what does Super Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and MegaMan Legends 3 have all in common that make these games great? The developers of these games listen to their fans! And oddly enough, that includes you too.
So when Hideki Kamiya said that he wanted to work on another Devil May Cry project and that he would also listen to the fans, you know it's going to be a great game. When developers listen to their fans, great games happen.
My point is, games are made for the gamers, by the gamers.

If anyone here in Europe, is still very concerned about the new direction of DmC, then I suggest you guys go to the Capcom Unity forums over here the US. There are alot of people on there daily expressing their opinions about DmC in hopes of getting Capcom to hear our voices. It's all about Unity over here, so let's unite for a just cause!!
Here's the link: Capcom Unity Forums (http://www.capcom-unity.com/devil_may_cry/go/forum/viewcategory/7401/General_Forums)
Capcom and Platinum working together? I doubt that will happen in the near future. Platinum gets by alright without Capcom and they want free creative control over their properties. To be honest, it's kinda like the possibility that Nintendo would work with Sony on a game. Nintendo and Sony were together once, but now they're competitors. Similar thing with Capcom and Platinum.

There's alot of speculation that Hideki Kamiya might be working on Mega Man Legends 3. So if it's true, then Capcom and Platinum Games are already working together. Maybe something more interesting might happen in the near future.

What? Capcom and Platinum working together is nothing like Nintendo and Sony.
if Platinum Games wants to develop a title from Capcom's library, they'd have to get the rights from Capcom. Also, it would most likely be that Capcom would become publisher of the title. Platinum Games can't publish their own titles right now, which is why SEGA and them came to a deal. While they are continuing to work together, Platinum Games can still have the freedom to offer Capcom contractual work. Or, Capcom could go to them and ask.
Either way, Capcom have made one of the most mind-numbingly retarded decisions in quite some time by going to a mediocre game developer and not a development team who could really shake the foundations of Devil May Cry and push it in to new heights.
This would be no different than what Capcom did with GRIN for Bionic Commando or Airtight Studios for Dark Void.

Hideki Kamiya isn't working on Megaman Legends 3. Capcom are. It was Keiji Inafune's project, as far as I know but he must have been replaced since resigning from Capcom.
I agree though, something interesting could happen in the future.
Anyway, I'll leave y'all some fanart I came across on another forum:

Here's a link to an article on Hideki Kamiya about Mega Man Legends: Hideki Kamiya teases Mega Man Legends (http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/09/18/hideki-kamiya-teases-mega-man-legends/)
The best thing about the article is that Capcom and Platinum Games are still talking to eachother.

I've seen the article, though it doesn't say anywhere that he's working with Capcom, as he's not.
I'm sure on a personal level, Kamiya-san and other former Capcom folks still stay in touch with their former colleagues. It's not unusual. However, I'd like to think that there are some business conversations going on about a possible contract for P* to work on a Capcom franchise. Capcom would be making a massive mistake if they aren't.

I'm pretty sure I didn't say that Hideki Kamiya was officially working on Mega Man Legends 3. I said that there are alot of "speculation" that Hideki Kamiya might be working on Mega Man Legends 3. Calm down buddy.
The reason why I brought that up was because of the fact that Hideki Kamiya is still keeping in touch with his former colleagues at Capcom. Which leads me to believe that a joint project between Capcom and Platinum Games, is possible. And I very much hope that, that project, will be Devil May Cry.
My point being.... Anything is possible. :thumb:

It was a general statement. I'm calm, don't you worry.
I think it was mentioned in the past that with P*, they come to you - you don't go to them. I'm sure that doesn't solidify anything though, as it would be ultimately Capcom's decision on who they contract. The issue is why you would court an unproven and poor developer in a genre that P* rule with an iron fist. Westernising is a piece of garbage excuse and will never fly.

i really hope that someone takes the time to read this becuase this might hold some answers about dmc 5
firstly anyone remember nero? well he was the ally in dmc 4 i am going to start with him....
NERO
my theory is that nero was created my agnus or at least was a subject to experimentation when he was a child. he sent nero away to a close family household kyrie and her brother to watch him grow, i think what he did was experiment with the soul of virgil in yamato and used it to create nero as we no today. my reason for this is the uncanny ability to use the devil bringer and why he obtains the ability to control virgil, i think nero is a super soldier based on spardas blood to be utilised and controled but things went wrong. i quote " and a voice echoed inside of me, i need more power" i think that nero was a construuct for virgils power.
dmc 5 dante
have you noticed whos voice is saying in the trailer what is your name? personally to me it sounds like agnus.... what i rekon has happened is that agnus was experimenting with children to make a super race using the combination of blood from dante, virgil and sparda to recreate a controlled version of a half breed that he could use and manipulate to his will. i quote (at the beggining of dmc 5 trailer) subject 64432b, i think that this new dante is a clone or super soldier like nero but different tests have lead him to believe he is dante becuase of dantes blood that corses through this particular person (this would explain why is hair is turning silver, becuase of the changing progress... just like nero).
dmc 4
anyone remember in dmc 4 when trish and dante were discussing neros fututre? they said hes got something important to do.... well my personal belief is that nero needs dantes power to and combine it with virgils power (via devil bringer) to recreate a sparda super soldier, it states in dmc 3 that only the combined power of virgil and dante (which is how they defeated arkham) is needed to defeat sparda which is exactly what happened becuase arkham had spardas power.
dmc 5
thus leaving us with a prelude to dmc4 which is yep uv guessed it dmc 5 which explains why agnus is still alive and i bet that the same containment facility at the begginning of dmc 5 is were they produced nero this how dante and trish in dmc 4 no of what nero must accomplish or do .....

I will NEVER warm to this game. Right now, I'm just praying the rest of the world hates it when it's released.
