Poor few seasons after the first and lower viewing ratings has resulted in NBC cancelling Heroes.

However, they are planning a special to wrap it all up after the cliffhanger ending of the last series.

For a Heroes fan like me who has enjoyed it since day one (season 1 is by far the best and most well-written), I can definitely see why this has happened. I do hope for a wrap-up special though but otherwise this is the time for the series to head out in to the sunset.

WHAAA?!

Oh no, I love heroes. It did go downhill after the first series (I blame the writers strike) but I was getting back ino it...

My one complaint is that it never actually shows an amazing showdown (ie with sylar and peter)

I lost track of the series about halfway through Season 2.

This is both good news and bad news. Cancellation means a snazzy box set for the DVD/Blu-Ray collection, and it also means that the rights can be turned into other properties.

For instance, a Heroes movie might work better than a TV series...or they can continue it with comics, Books, or even a game.

Heroes has much more support than Firefly, and Firefly managed to get a film...

A 2+ hour special (which would probably constitute as a TV movie) is being planned by NBC. There's no way they'd fund a proper full-scale movie as they didn't have the money to properly fund the series itself.

There have also been novels/comics that I've seen in stores (like HMV and Waterstones) as well as a mobile game. No idea on the levels of success where these are concerned however.

Dwindling viewer ratings, high development costs and increase in popularity with other NBC shows were the primary reasons why the show has been canned, despite success overseas (here for example) where DVD sales, etc. are concerned. Guess that wasn't enough to make back the money.

DVD/Blu-Ray box set containing all 5 seasons would be win for me.

At the end of the day, NBC basically ran out of options with the franchise and a TV special is the only viable option for NBC themselves, if they stick to that idea. There was nothing else they could do.

In terms of the rights going elsewhere, it would be nice but then you'd also have to think about the production team, the cast, etc. and who would have the money to properly fund everything, as well as fitting new seasons in to schedules and time slots. It's really not worth the hassle and to be honest, I'd rather not see new cast or anything of the like.

Have this planned special and then let the series go.

I saw this comic, and thought of this topic:

I think it perfectly describes the feeling for most people...after the first series, it all went downhill (probably because of the writers strike), and it just never regained its popularity...

Sad times. I quite enjoyed it even the later episodes (except for where Hiro and Samuel were getting rinsed..boring, much?). Makes me more annoyed given that I personally think Heroes was waaay better than anything Smallville has been doing since season 3 and yet Smallville is getting a TENTH season (fair enough the last episode was actually decent, for once). Sad days indeed...
