View Full Version : What is a street fighter?
I saw today the new character from Super Street Fighter 4 Harken and just felt that's he is not a street fighter.
A street fighter in my eyes is as the name says, a fighter who fights on streets, who dosn't put all its trust on its super and ultras combo, it trusts with its fists based on real fighting style. Alot of charaters would have better be in Dragonball Budokai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZgYLHBCWKc) then Super Street Fighter 4. Im think of characters like Hakan, Rufus and Seth whose move are to inhuman to be made and is not made by a Street Fighter. What do you people thnik?
Funny enough, you're defying the entire point of the Street Fighter lore:
This series has been centered around the world fighting tournament that gathers the strongest fighters from their countries.
And so far, I think the designers have pretty much gotten most character's native styles down pretty well...with the exceptions of a few who fight more with their own style. (Though, it T.Hawk's fighting style is derived of some indian grappling style I don't know, please, teach me <3 )
Hakan who's moves are based on Oil Wrestling (Yagli Gures, info provided by new member ; Hakan61) , Most of Rufus' animations are actually very based on Chinese Kempo and the fact that despite his comical build, he IS actually one of the fighters in the US who got selected to fight in the tournament proves his strenght.
Plain and Simple, Seth is a robot. Or at least an altered man, he was made to be able to do what normal human couldn't. ;)
But since he's the organiser of the tournament (to the public eye at least, and as far as we know) he didn't have to qualify as a street fighter, so yeah, technically, he isn't one.
As far as I can tell, all characters except for Seth and Blanka have a particular counterpart of a real life fighting style.
And I would consider Blanka's "beast-like" style to be one of a wild beast anyways, so it counts in my book.
Ryu, Ken, Gouki/Akuma, Gouken, Dan, Sakura: Shotokan. (I'll call it like that because there are some people who know the name of the actual style, but I don't) And yeah, didn't want to write a different style for Dan, you guys know what I mean. ;)
Cammy, Dictator, Guile: Command Sambo (Various styles)
Sagat, Adon : Muay Thai
Cody: Brawling
Guy, Ibuki, Vega/Claw : Ninjutsu
Fei Long: Jeet Kun do, obviously based on Bruce Lee who invented the style
Dhalsim: Yoga, yoga , yogaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Chun-li, Gen, Rufus: Chinese Martial arts of which I have no clue. I think Gen's may be related to Tai Chi.
Zangief: Wrestling
El Fuerte: Lucha Libre
E.Honda: Sumo wrestling
Dudley, Balrog/Boxer : Boxing. (Feels kinda stupid to put it, with Balrog being called boxer in the scene and all..)
Abel: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Makoto: Karate
Juri; Taekwando
Deejay: Kickboxing
So who am I missing? C.Viper, T.hawk and Blanka, though I already explained Blanka and the hawk.
Add the fact that Viper got into the tournament because of her ties as an inside agent for S.I.N and you've got an entire cast that got in the Street Fighting championship because they've scored enough points to qualify (See Dan's opening movie in SFIV) for the tournament by doing..yeah, you guessed it, street fighting.
Each fighter has his/her own style, don't just break them down because they don't use what you expect. ;D
This il street fighter... is not UFC or other fighting simulations

Ofc not, but SSF 4 feels to exceedingly overwhelming which dosn't suit in the series, its theme. It needs to be more normal like Tekken 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_0q0kL03Lg) or alpha 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w38ynqsLi9A).

People wants variations in the games.
And in fighting games particularly these additions are very important of how the players will choose a character.
And this has to do with a lot of parameters:
Character: gameplay, design, attitude, story, how strong he/she is etc.
Even if you don't like a character doesn't mean that someone else will not selected him/her.
Personally i don't like Seth.I think he is the worst character in the Street Series together with Twelve from 3rd strike.
But i think that his gameplay is interesting and gives another "breathe" to the game.
About Rufus.
I always main T.Hawk because he is my favourite character in Street Series. And im glad that i can play him AT LAST in Super and once i again i ll have him as main.
But in SFIV i wasn't sure of which character to play.
I choose Rose as a sub character because i love her since Alpha series and i maintained Rufus as my first character because i like his belly and his fighting style.
Rufus is in the same category as Bob from Tekken.
What's the story about these characters?
They are fat and strong but they move very fast.
Is another addition to fighting games pretty unique (to see a fat man to do crazy flips and go fast like a kung fu fighter) and again there are too strong.
I think this is incredible funny and at the same time interesting.
Both Bob and Rufus has very interesting and unique fighting style and some people loved them.
For these character there are 2 options.
You will hate to play a fat man and you are not going to choose these fighters or you will loved them because of their movelist and their gameplay.
Hakan is another addition to Street world.I find him very Cool.
His like he jumped from Blazblue and get into Street Fighter.
This is good.I like so much these unique parts.
I don't know how strong he will be but i don't care for that.
The point is to like the character (not only bases to tier lists) and somehow with his/her own unique style amuse you.
I find pretty boring characters with the same based formula like Ryu and Ken.
Witch they are similar in many ways and boring imo in many ways.
Hadouken, hadouken, hadouken....Oh...there is also Shoryuken. lol
Also i hate these characters because its so annoying that some scrubs (Ryutards) they choose him all day to jump all the time and do hadouken's and other noob stuff like that. Its so annoying.
Anyhow....I don't want to say that i have a problem with shotos but i like the difference.
Don't misunderstood me to that.
I also don't play Online and i hate it because if you prefer online from offline you ll never be as good as you want but this is irrelevant.
(Though, it T.Hawk's fighting style is derived of some indian grappling style I don't know, please, teach me <3 )
T.Hawk's fighting style is based on an Indian ancient wrestling technique (like you said) but for most part its his own style.
He bases to his strength and his enormous size of his body to hit, grab and pressure his opponent.Doesn't have generally a specific name.
Ofc not, but SSF 4 feels to exceedingly overwhelming which dosn't suit in the series, its theme. It needs to be more normal like Tekken 6 or alpha 3.
What do you mean by that?I don't understand.
What Alpha series (and especially 3 from what you are saying) that is not so overwhelming?
Care to explain this a little further?
And also about Tekken.
People play differently, it'll bring in the newbies while still having characters than the veterans recognise.

Chun-li, Gen, Rufus: Chinese Martial arts of which I have no clue. I think Gen's may be related to Tai Chi.
I quite like Gen, by the way, and at least one of his styles is some Mantis Kung Fu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Praying_Mantis_%28martial_art%29) I think.
(i just linked this particular page, because it´s got an image of that way he holds his hands,
which is quite unique, I think, also I´m too drunk to look for a better page, I´m afraid)
And, no, I don´t like Hakan, just for the fact that he´s beating up Juri in that movie that is one the main page here XD

Dito :)
I think that if you want "just realistic street fighting" you better play Virtua Fighter.
I really like Charakters like Blanka, M.Bison, Crimson Viper or Rose even if or more because of their ectravagant styles.
Or do you think that even if you fight without rules you can do "Shuryucan" (or how it's written)? Without this Charas and sepcial moves, it would be borng.
But Hakan is a big spammer, a can see how many Internet players are yust spamming, blocking and doing this creepy oil moves all the time so you can't get them ...

Street fighter 4 is like a improved Dragonball game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4waPpdhZHHo) with too much exaggerate. The others arn't, the are just perfect balanced with the exaggeration: Tekken 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz3cRbxfCKU), Alpha 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB8nTMdoUx4).

Sure you can write shoryuken like that (get the joke: "sureyoucan" :p)

Amm....First of all Street Fighter IV follows Turbo's steps in gameplay system and with more tools from 3rd strike and some new that are the most perfect additions generally in every Street Fighter such as Focus.
If you are saying that SFIV is an improved Dragonball its the same to say that Turbo and 3RD strike are previous Dragonball titles.
....And second and most important.
SFIV is the MOST BALANCED Street Title in History.
Every hardcore player in Street Series will support this because its the truth.
Tekken 6 has the same balance as SFIV.Which means they are both very balanced games.
But not ofcourse Alpha 3.
