Yeah, thats the point. You may not get any discs or sticks. Downloadable content can be regulated much more strictly, for a couple of reasons. I somewhat doubt the PSP 2 will be DL only. At any rate, its not something Im looking forward to at all.

This doesnt seem all that interesting to me. I hate the idea of Digital Distribution as a main form of getting the games I want to play.

And the whole Backwards Compatability thing isnt right either...it isnt BC if I have to re-buy the game I already own for the latest version of the console.

I think Ill be sticking with my Slimline for a good few years.

Then it is of interest to you. If Im not mistaken we are talking about the PSP 2 here, not the PSP 4000.

Same here.

At least thats not how it should be.

Its still of no interest to me at all.

Going down the route of Digital Distribution puts me off the PSP2 completely.

Like I said, Im content with my PSP Slim and the games it has to offer.

Apparently we misunderstood each other. Its a relevant fact (or lets say aspect) for you, one that can eliminate your interest in the system. In that sense its of interest to you.

Ah, then yes...the articles are of interest to me...but the actual console isnt :P

Yeah, I would at least try not to buy the console because I dont like where this is headed. DLC, in my opinion, is very problematic.

I was thinking about purchasing a PSP, the line-up of software this year looks like the strongest since, well, ever. Yet the news of the PSP2 has somewhat dampend my enthusiasim of getting one. :(

I can understand that it might dampen your enthusiasm, because if you invest in a normal PSP, then you wont have access to what is made for the PSP2...but think of it this way:

- The release of a PSP2 will decrese the price of a normal PSP, and the games available for it (even more so if they become available in Digital format)

- The decrease in price for PSP games opens up more games for you to look in to, perhaps that you wouldnt have bought at the price they are currently at.

By the time you could be done with the PSP, the PSP2 will probably be outdated and fairly cheap, etc.

http://kotaku.com/5161253/sony-umd-business-is-critical-to-us/

While not outright denying rumors of a UMD-free Playstation Portable, the head of Sonys hardware marketing said that the UMD business is critical to us this year and beyond.
(...)
Currently publishers can choose to launch a game on UMD or go direct to digital through the Playstation Store.

There is a delay right now because we want to ensure retail is respected and have their day in the sun, Koller said. Retail has been concerned about the digital side of game purchases, but that conversation has changed in the past nine to 12 months.

Thats because retail stores can sell Playstation Network cards and make a profit on them.

Sony is currently looking through their PSOne library and all publishers back histories to see what can be placed on the Playstation Network, he said.
SO, it may be dead or not... :dead:

I think the UMD is pretty great. Its traditional yet relatively advanced. The functionality it offers with the PSP, to me, is very satisfying. With the PSP 2000 its silent, the battery life is good and it offers a considerable amount of storage space. Overall, I think its underrated, very much so.

As for the article, thats apparently actually bad news for UMD and non-digital distribution.

I agree.

If they had made it more wide spread in portable devices like walkmans and/or a UMD protible film music player and not just in the PSP it may have done better and been taken more seriously,

Good to hear. I dont like this controlled digital future at all. Lets assume Sony or Microsoft release a game in downloadable form only. Theyll be able to control the exact price. Therell be no competition, no one to offer it cheaper. You also generally wont be able to re-sell that game. Its on your HDD, on an HDD. If that single HDD with a load of games goes bananas then youll be screwed. Perhaps not as long as there is quality support available (youll be allowed to download it again), but I doubt this will be the case. Via firmware updates youll be under the control of whoever owns the platform, in a way your hardware. The more things move away from classic absolute property rights, or the ability to exercise them anyway the more problematic it gets. I am rather sceptical when it comes to DRM and IP in enterainment. Obviously I havent done enough research to support what I have hinted at but these are relevant concerns, in my opinion.

That aside, I would like to have games in material form/shape. I appreciate box art and theres more to it.

I dont mid DLC as a insentive to buy a certain console or arcade type games but full games the idea I just dont like.

Thats the main resion I held off for the blu-ray version Siren bloods curse on ps3.

I also like to have games in material form/shape.

I also prefer a game in a disc than a download. Its just that you can see the disc and say its mine, its there and every time I want to play it I just insert it in the console, it can be today or in 10 years.

. If that single HDD with a load of games goes bananas then youll be screwed
Actually you seeing it wrongly. Its the contrary. If you have the game on a Blu-ray and it falls or breaks, you will have to buy another game. However, if the game was a download from the PSN Store and your HDD is corrupted, format it and download again the file. Obviously, like you say, the download is only available has long as the PSN is still functional, probably in 10 years I can play the GT5 in my PS3 with my Blu-ray but not download it from the Store...

Once more, good to hear. As for me seeing it wrongly, what Ive written closely resembles your last paragraph.
