Ill remain skeptical for the future of the series, especially if certain plot elements are carried out as implied; characters and all. Resident Evil 5s focus on bringing closure to many aspects of the series and its timeline could have a negative effect on the future of the series, especially in terms of plot and characters.
Ill keep an open mind but do worry about whether or not the same effect can be had in the future as it has in the past regarding the series.

Agreed.
If they essentially decide to kill off the old plotline and start from scrap, then Im not sure whatll happen...

I dont know whats going in your heads. Theyve already done it. 4 years ago.
I predicted a complete reboot about a year ago, this comes as a bittersweet confirmation.
I suspect the overhaul will include turning it into a standard TPS.

The storyline didnt get an overhaul or reboot 4 years ago though. They still stuck to it, whilst trying to offer something new.
This pretty much offers the chance of seeing the complete end to the storyline we have now, and a reboot to it all...

Im interested if they mean reboot as in Starting from the series beginning, but in a different fashion or perhaps instead a completely new chapter. Umbrella will be gone by the end of RE5 and TriCell will rise to their position, which is what I think this reboot will be about.
New gameplay, new characters and of course, TriCell.
I wonder how theyll spin it though. Umbrellas initial accident was what sparked the series - TriCell arent as, well, stupid as Umbrella in that regard and will probably take a more active response (IE. Bio-Terrorism introduced in Degeneration)
I really support their decision. Itll be nice to see something fresh, and hopefully a bit more gloomy.
It will be interesting to see if they move away from the whole virus-centered plot altogether, onto something completely different [without making it too straight forward, or too sci-fi].

Speaking of new ideas, I think its safe to bring this back up:

Whether or not Kawata-san was joking, I can really see his vision of how London would be portrayed in a RE game, in the form of a reboot.
Personally, I could see it have an old-school film-noir feel to it, set in the Winter as Kawata-san has mentioned in the article. Set entirely at night with hardly anyone around. Heck, something not too dissimilar to Silent Hills setting but less on the fog of course.
Heck, even something like this but with more snow:

Clays comment about moving away from Viral-based storyline would be very interesting, though how could it be done?

If they moved away from Viral storyline, then what could they do it on? If it became too...mystical, like Silent Hill, then I dont think Id like it.
If it decides to move into the territory that MGS set up (nanotechnology, cloning of humans, etc), then I guess thatd be ok...but wouldnt feel right.
I guess it all depends on how they spin it...

Except for a few overhauled characters which didnt have anything in common with the ones pre 2004, the storyline has ended. Everything else is just nitpicking or clawing to the bits and pieces.
