View Full Version : Q&A / Competition - Ace Attorney: Miles Edgworth
Afternoon All,
To celebrate the launch of Ace Attorney on WiiWare & DS, we're giving you a chance to post your questions to Eshiro-San producer of the hit series.
The best 9 questions will win a signed poster by Eshiro-San himself, we also have 30 un-signed posters as runner-up prizes too.
Competition closes @ 17:30 GMT Friday 19th of Feb. Winners will be selected shortly after.
What originally inspired you to make a videogame in the Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attourney series based on logic, investigation and questioning, rather than proving and discovering points inside a court of law?

Being a massive Capcom fan, along with being an old school nintendo fan, what does Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth offer to somebody like me, who hasn't played any of the previous titles?
Also, judging from the trailer, it looks like a fun and old school typed game, which could work well on PSN and XBLA. Are there any plans for releasing future games, or re-released games in the series, on these digital services?
Thanks very much for your time!

The first game is available on the Wii store so I presume the others will follow suite.
As for my question;
Are any of the characters within the game series based on people you know in real life? A real life Gumshoe would be the best thing EVER.
Greetings, Eshiro-San; my question is about the whole series, but particularly about the newest entries in the series, meaning Apollo Justice or Ace Attorney Investigations.
Even if you are not directly involved in the writing process I'm curious if, when writing the original Japanese script, now that the series is not sold exclusively in Japan, the idea of making the English adaptation/translation easier is kept in mind, avoiding Japanese tongue-in-cheeks or jokes... or is the writer's inventive not limited in any way, making it up to the translators to find the right way to express the dialogues?
Thanks a lot,
David from Italy.
The Ace Attorney games are all so rich in character and story. How does your team brainstorm these great ides and what plans did you originally have for this game early on?
When writing the murder cases, does your team start from a solution and work backwards or begin with a premise and work out the solution as you go along?

Now that Mr Edgeworth got his own spin off game, which other character(s) would you consider worthy of a new game and why?
Would you consider expanding the current marketing blitz(musical, concerts, merchandise) seen in Japan for the series to other territories?
Is the Phoenix Wright trilogy the last that we will see of him in court, or is there even a slight chance of seeing more games focused on him?
What was the reason that prompted the team to focus on Apollo Justice for the 4th game, instead of continuing with same characters?
If possible please thank him for the many fun bus rides shouting objection into the DS microphone, whenever one of the games was out and I got it.I am glad that my curious nature got me to try this unique series! I dare you to show the team photos of my crazy Polly costume. :p
Are there any characters from the Ace Attorney universe that you would like to expand on?
How have characters changed since you first came up with the ideas for them? Were there characters that stayed pretty much the same from when you first created them and characters that changed a lot?
Since Ace attorney is comming to iphone, is there any plan to expand the series to microsoft or sony platform ?
Do you think that the series could ever have a 3D adventure game (spin off) like heavy rain ?
Miles Edgeworth can move on the screen, will it be keep for the new games ? and did this new liberty helps in the creative process of the riddles ?
Are there any other videogames which have affected you?

Those kind of text adventures are all similar to each other because with multiple choices and a lot of text to read, this series isn't very different from other ones.
Anyway, i played Phoenix Wright trilogy and i definitely loved it and i really thought it was special.
In your opinion, what made the Ace Attorney series so successful and different from other ones?

What is it that you think will really catch people's attention with this game?
Are there any things you wished could've been in the final product but didn't make it?
Hello Eshiro-san, I'm really looking forward to seeing Edgeworth take the lead in the new game! :D Here are my questions.
What was your favourite part of working on the new game?
If you could have made the game with someone other than Edgeworth as the lead, who would you choose?
What's your favourite adventure game other than your own of course? :)
Have you been influenced by any games from the past?
1- If you could make a case based on any other video game franchise (Capcom or non-Capcom) but Gosht Trick, witch would it be?
2- What do you think about the still possible addition of Phoenix Wright in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom Cross Generation of Heroes?

Do you expose yourself to a lot of mystery-based media, such as novels, manga, or movies to come up with the ideas for the various Ace Attorney cases, or do you make them up yourself from scratch?
Also, what happened to Maya Fey between Ace Attourney 3 and 4?

Have you ever considered making an Ace Attorney game where the player's decisions can lead to multiple different endings?
How did you solve the problem of having to appeal to both veterans and newcomers of the series?

16-02-10, 06:55
Are any other Ace Attorney games being planned for the future, and if so, can you tell anything about them?
I was really hoping to play in court as Edgeworth; is it possible that we may be able to play as the prosecutor in a court situation?
Question: Where did you get the ideas for the cases? Did you have to do research into law?
two questions in one, is that alright?

Are you satisfied with the final product? Is the story inspired with last games?
Thanks :P
Have you ever considered bringing a PvP (player versus player) feature to the game?. For instance where you and a friend can help one another solve a case, or battle one another on a case for points, etc.

As a long time fan it's so fun to see there has been steps taken to advance the game series, either if it's storywise and now the actual gameplay with the new game (which from what I seen seems like it will be a great game!).
I was wondering, assuming the series will continue to grow, are there any plans on making new changes?
Perhaps wishful thinking on my own behalf (and many other fans of the series I've come to know), perhaps an Anime, a 3D game, or letting someone else take the lead of a new game? :D

Hello Mr. Eshiro!
A lot of great jokes and running gags appear throughout the Ace Attorney series. Do you have a favorite joke?
The "ladder/stepladder" joke was in all of the Ace Attorney games so far. Is there a reason for this? Maybe there's a inside joke among the staff about this joke?

So far, gamers have been given the opportunity to play as Phoenix Wright, Mia Fey, Miles Edgeworth, and Apollo Justice.
With Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth out, is there a chance that you will further explore the other characters within the Ace Attorney universe in a similar way? If so, will we see the world through the eyes of the classic cast (like Franziska von Karma or maybe even *gasp* Diego Armando?) or will it be a new addition to the series' roster?
Do you have a favorite side character in the series?
Also, porting the first AA game was an interesting choice. If the Wii ports prove to be successful, can we expect a non-portable console game in the future?
Finally, did you ever imagined that the Ace Attorney would be this successful outside of Japan?

1 - Given the relative rarity of the first game within Europe, it is assumed that Capcom and possibly their staff were not expecting the series to hit off so well.
Did the large success of the series, and positive feedback from reviewers and fans alike, come as a surprise or shock to yourself or your team?
2 - The Ace Attorney series is an obvious evolution of the popular Point & Click adventures of the 90's. Were there any particular Point & Click titles that inspired you to create this series? Or any other styles of game that had an effect on the production of the series?
Ok, umm... How did you and your team ever brainstorm such a wonderful series? Will we ever get the chance to play as the Judge or the ever-lovable Gumshoe? Will there possibly be a sequel to Apollo Justice? Will Steel Samurai plushies ever hit the market?
1) In your opinion, do you think the adventure game genre is somewhat 'oldfashioned' (in comparison with other genres, such as FPS, or even just Action games)? And which way should the genre go in order to become even better and 'renew itself'? 3D for example?
2) Could you give one thing you don't like about Ace Attorney Investigations? (something you didn't like working on during the game's development for example).
3) What is Edgeworth's favorite tea? :) (So that I could go and buy some!)
All the cases in the Ace Attorney series are so intricately designed and all the pieces of the puzzle fit together in the end. When writing and planning the cases, do you start at the murder and work backwards to find the story? Or do you start at the beginning and watch the characters grow and find where the story ends?
When creating the characters, do you start with finding their personalities or their physical appearance? Are their names usually the last things that are created about them?
Have any of your team members personally been an attorney, or have you interviewed other attorneys to get a more accurate understanding of the process of the law?
Thank you so much for your time!

Has this Q&A been delayed?
Is there any more news on this?.
Yoyo,
Slight change in the prize pool - I've got 2 * the art of Phoenix Wright: AA books and 2 * steel DS cases.
Poster tubes are hard to come by so I don't have enough for everybody. I'll send out as many as I can.
Myself and the Euro team will pick some winners today.

I'd love any of those prizes! Hope I end up winning something.
I'm just wondering if Eshiro-San answered some of the questions, or if some winners were just chosen at random.
Here are the responses:
In Red: Motohide Eshiro, Producer
In Blue: Takeshi Yamazaki, Director
If you could have made the game with someone other than Edgeworth as the lead, who would you choose?
Motohide: I do think Edgeworth is the most befitting as the lead. But in the early stages of the development game director Takeshi suggested Ema Skye as the protagonist and we were contemplating on that for a while.
Have you ever considered making an Ace Attorney game where the player's decisions can lead to multiple different endings?
Motohide: When we first started planning for this title we thought of all sorts of ideas some over the top – some not. It was through this process that gave us the idea of ‘Logic’ mode, ‘Rebuttals’ system and so on. I guess multi ending isn’t really for this title if it wasn’t implemented after that much discussion over how the game should be.
Have you ever considered bringing a PvP (player versus player) feature to the game?. For instance where you and a friend can help one another solve a case, or battle one another on a case for points, etc.
Motohide: Well… considering this is a game where you become Miles Edgeworth himself in order to pursue the veiled truth in a mystery crime scene, I don’t think the concept of PvP would work very well.
The "ladder/stepladder" joke was in all of the Ace Attorney games so far. Is there a reason for this? Maybe there's a inside joke among the staff about this joke?
Takeshi: It’s not an inside joke or anything but I have to say it has been a tradition since the very first Ace Attorney title. These days the joke has evolved so much that we can’t just let the ladder/stepladder appear in game and so we had to be very witty in order to include them in the conversations between Miles and Kay. A lot of work for my brain indeed.
The Ace Attorney series is an obvious evolution of the popular Point & Click adventures of the 90's. Were there any particular Point & Click titles that inspired you to create this series? Or any other styles of game that had an effect on the production of the series?
Takeshi: Not so much as to have been inspired for the series, but I am a big fan of the Myst series from that period - I loved the mysterious atmosphere and the puzzles.
Have any of your team members personally been an attorney, or have you interviewed other attorneys to get a more accurate understanding of the process of the law?
Motohide: I’m not sure if any family member of our development team is or was in the legal industry – but we did visit a real prosecutor and we asked him all sorts of questions spanning from how a prosecutor would actually investigate a case to the relationship with the police. It was very useful for our project.
Thanks for posting the questions/answers Fonix.:D
Being a big AA fan myself, i love to read the fans questions being answered from legends such as Eshiro and Yamazaki themselves, and to see what feedback they give us on such a great series of games.
Thanks for posting up the Q&A :D

Haha, that's great XD
Finally a straight answer about the stepladder apearances! I herd a few theories that seems... unlikely XD
It's also fun to hear that they really seem to look to the fans and "our" take on the games.
Great interview! =D

Heh... I never thought I'd actually win this Q/A contest. Now, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the mysterious prize is. And of course, I'll try to take a picture of the prize as soon as I receive it.
I'm not going to ask when we'll receive them, I'm happy enough to know I've won. I can wait patiently for now :)
By the way, which of my questions were picked up?
Anyway, thank you very much for this contest, both Capcom and Eshiro-san!

For a moment, I thought the Phoenix figurine was also a prize :p
Anyway, won't be able to post my pic for a little while (before the 8th of June). The reason: since I didn't know when I'd receive the prize, and since I did want to receive it beore I go on holidays, I gave an adress I won't be at before... well, I'm on holidays :)
But as soon as I get the prize, I'll take a nice pic of it! :)
Ok, I finally got my prize, and I took a few pictures this morning... here they are!

Many, many thanks for this wonderful prize! I already had the artbooks, but they were in Japanese, and I can't say I know enough Japanese to be able to read the notes inside the artbook... but now I can!
Once again, thanks a lot for this contest! :)
