I think it's weird that things are so often sold for 99p, or £x.99. Supposedly, you're supposed to think "wow, less than a £!".

I've always thought that since 1 is a lower number, then £1 is better than 99p. And Since 0 is lower than 99, £13 should be subliminally more attractive than £12.99 it just looks like a smaller number, you know?

Well, there was one guy, Thomas Bata and he started to price his products(shoes)always with 99 or 49 a the end. Thats called Bata prices(at least here). After him everyone started to do the same thing. It makes the ilusion that 99 cents is really less than 1 euro(it is but it doesnt really matter, 1 cent...). Its much like an optical ilusion. So there you have it

I would have loved to have been in the meeting where they dreamt up the ipad...

Mr Apple: "So, basically what our market research shows is that, despite the trend for technology becoming more compact, what our customers really want is an enormous version of the iPhone"

Dave: "But without the phone bit"

Mr Apple: "Thanks Dave, thanks for reminding us, no phone bit"

Dave: "Also, they really like the idea of a laptop with no keyboard"

Mr Apple: "Dave, whatever we're paying you we're going to double it"

Dave: *glees* ^_^

I'm surprised no one has had the idea of bringing out a 98p shop.:D

Surely this would put the 99p shops out of business.

No47, there's a shop in Letchworth called...uh...something like "Everything's 90p!" or some nonsense like that. Quite humorous seeing shops competing with eachother via such minor reductions in their standard pricing. I'm more than happy at Poundland, to be honest, than faffing about with these cheaper ones.

Tbh if it actually did something majorly different it would be worthwhile.

I was always told that it also helps circulation of coins as it means more coins going around. :p

We have this 5 litre bottle to put 2p/1p coins in, and when it is full we gather them in bags to change at bank, for a trip around the Caribbean(well last part may not be true...)!

I live in Hounslow and theres a row of shops in the highstreet. The first one is a pound shop, just a couple doors down theres a 99p store, a little further theres a 98p shop. down the other end of the street theres a 97p shop. somewhere in the middle theres a 90p shop. But best of all, there are 2 subways so I can avoid all the cheap tat and get me a tasty sammich! NOMS!

What happens if Britain eventually adopts the Euro? It's going to be a rebranding nightmare in Hounslow! XD

They'll just have to go pre-decimilsation and start selling things by weight again

But according to EU legislation everything must be sold in metric units. So £ would be out, lb is out, the only thing left to keep the phonetic name is for the shop assistants to punch you on the conk. Might be a niche market.

Are there any plans for that?

I know that Iceland's been looking into it, as part of their joining the EU (and mostly, due to their economical crisis in 2008-2009) but never heard of any plans for the United Kingdom...

It's always been a wait and see thing for the UK. I don't think we'll be joining any time soon given the current climate and various economic crises with some member states.

It'll all be irrelevant when i take over the country though. The official currency will become the 'dracon'.

With the surge of euro-sceptics and the prohibitive chance of Conservative revival. The Euro currency seems far-fetched. Maybe in 20 years time? :)

(Though I must admit, the sterling currency is lovely).
