I woke up about a hour ago and noticed all of London was still fully covered in snow! Just checked and no buses or any othere transports as usual when it snows so guess Im not going Uni today. Is anyone else in the UK stuck home too or did you try to go out and do whatever it is you do? :P

For some reason I feel like trying to do a snowman like in Animal Crossing but its too cold!

Yup, had some classes today and got a text this morning saying that theyre off and if I wanted to spend the valuable educational time at a pub instead ;D. Me being the pessimistic type and having doubts about this (while still retaining a slight bit of joy inside) couldnt believe it at first. Checked the website and low and behold, it was closed.

What have I done instead? Downloaded the RE5 demo off the JPN PSN Store and have been playing it since.

Im going to sound like a right fool but Im actually disappointed because this is my last year and Ive got a large amount of work to get done. Mondays are the best days for me and now its all going to go against me...

Aww...who am I kidding; SNOW DAY!!!!!! =D

Well playing the Resident evil 5 demo is a pretty good idea and lots of practise for when the game comes out. I havent done much besides breakfast but I am planning on trying to finish that Street Fighter remix song, doing this menu for a java game coursework and maybe finish colouring a drawing from ages ago. :P

Its not like we didnt try anyway right but walking miles to College/Uni is not the most desirable option. ;)

But yes... Snow day indeed! :D

Got to the tube station and found myself stuck outside with quite a crowd. Waited enough to get frozen and eventually gave up and walked back, working from home today :p

It hasnt snowed this much for well over 10 years. Still nowhere near that amount but its getting there. Slowly!

I myself was in a conflict. On one hand I wanted to go in just so I could brave the conditions and see how beautiful it all looks but, on the other, for just an hour of lessons it didnt seem worth it getting stuck in a crowd. All lessons are cancelled anyway so I shall stay home. Unless of course some crazy friends decide to go out...come on crazy friends! Lets go out!

Woke up this morning and didnt really want to. Opened the curtains to see white.

Got myself dressed and went to Uni for my first lesson. There were barely any footprints in the snow, meaning I was one of a few that could be bothered to walk 5 minutes to the Uni.

Got in to find that I was 1 of 7 people that could be bothered to walk the 5 minutes. Had our first lesson, then discovered that the rest were cancelled.

Went in to town and got my shopping, came back here.

I live a boring life, but at least I made the effort to actually go in to Uni today. It annoys me that so few people could be bothered to walk 5 minutes.

Its not always about being bothered. Its about using their senses. It was obvious lessons would get cancelled in the end. Be glad you only live 5 minutes away. I live a while from mine. What a waste it would have been to go in realising few else would bother. Joys for e-mails stating All lectures cancelled. ha!

This was the first snow day that I have had to work on, mainly because work is just down the road from me, but also none of my staff were able to make it in, so i wasnt thrilled by the prospect of snow.

I was already doing overtime but seeing as how working in the snow everything took at least 3 times as long to do I ended up staying there for ages, two vehicals got stuck in the snow making my warehouse a very dangerous place indeed! as you have exit the yard up hill both lorries slid back down at least 10 times before they were able to leave, eventually me and one of the drivers walked the streets searching for one of the counsils grit bin things and we nicked all the grit which made life somewhat easier. Then a bird flew into the warehouse and started causing havok (i say havok, it was a wagtail so it just distracted everyone) and I was blamed yet again for none of my staff being at work despite most of them having good reason for not being there.

I think I will enjoy my day off today afther that though :)

I woke up today to see yet more snow outside, but it wasnt enough to close the Uni.

The Uni website stated that they were open and we should head in. So I got ready and went in...only to find that my first of only 2 lectures has been cancelled.

Rumours are strong that the second lesson is cancelled to.

Grrr.

On a plus, I managed to pop into HMV and buy myself Citizen Kane.

i read about this from a newspaper in school today

i was amused when i read some interviews with some finnish people living in london saying that almost all the shops were closed and people didnt ge to work because of 10cms of snow when here in finland thats a regular amount of snow every winter

Its not exactly a regular occurence in the UK so its pretty much unprepared for. If it was ever the case where we had a huge amount of snowfall everything would grind to a halt.

We dont even have snow ploughs over here so you see how it could be a problem.

I find it ridiculous that everything just stopped because of the snow.

We were told about a week back that wed be getting snow soon...why werent people prepared?

Or, at least, why werent the governmental services prepared? Or the travel services?

I find it amazing that people get so distressed over a bit of snow...

Sinister
03-02-09, 13:10
tbh i think it was just laziness, for example lots of people who work for london transport services turned up to work, they had to stay at work for their shift but they were not allowed to drive buses

and then there are the ppl that see snow as an excuse to have a day off

I personally did expeirance a number of problems that seriously slowed me down but they didnt stop me.

People at my Uni used the snow as an excuse for deadline extensions on their assignments.

That really bugged me...as I still managed to get my assignment in on time...well, long before the given time actually.

Laziness bugs me.

Agreed.

The massive problems yesterday caused a huge financial effect on the economy with - according to the news - billions of pounds lost.

They also showcased how the likes of Moscow deal with snow. Pin tyres (they have tiny spikes on the tyres for grips), scrapers etc. While that stuff isnt necessary, the one thing the report did show prominently is grit trucks. Why on Earth grit trucks werent working 24/7 prior to the snowstorms is beyond me. That is the least the Government should have had done in full motion.

My cat went out in the snow for the first time this morning, after every step she took she kept shaking the snow off her paws lol.

Haha, my dog is similar. Although, she now likes to run in the snow a lot more and overall, be a joyful little soul. When shes out of the snow however, she looks twice the size because of the amount of snow stuck to her legs. Poor thing.

In the 12 years Ive been in London I think Ive seen the snow...hmmm...4 times. Snow equipment is expensive, not sure we want to see millions invested in something that may (or more likely not) be of use once a year, to be honest ;)

Id say that Im the second kind of person. Whats the problem with having a week off from uni, when there is nothing important that is going to happen. Also, surely work can stop for a day. All the employer has to do is find a couple of people who will do overtime. Its not world-changing stuff.

Carbonox_Ratchet

Actually, life isnt that simple. The economy lost mega money yesterday because of the lack of work. News reports were touting œ1bn as the loss.

I dont quite get the relevance of how money is applicable to life in regards to my comment.

Im simply stating that the economy cant support 1 day off from work by the majority.

As for grit trucks, they are something that should have been implemented before the snowstorms came. A stupid idea not to have them out in full force.

im really sorry about this but i went to work when it was snowing and had to work OUTSIDE in the SNOW for 8 hours, you will be hard pressed to find people who surffered as bad as me (ppl who couldnt get to work due to puplic transport are obv. excused, and obv people who were generally suffering before hand) and I didnt have an easy day, in fact i had a really difficult day yet do you know what? I had a really good day, sure it was hard work, sure ppl were giving me a hard time but being outside in the snow and problem solving, its a part of life to deal with difficult situations, being lazy never ever solves anything

money is how our world works, no matter how you look at it 1bn (tho some people predict 3 bn by the end of the week) is a huge amount due to some people who want an excuse to have a day off, and not caring about the ecnoomy means you dont really care about your own country and therefore its people and thus you are a selfish person, sorry if that sounds a bit generic but thats my view on it, if your not part of the solution i.e. people who go to work/school/lectures when its snowing then your part of the problem i.e. the people that are costing a suffering economy billions of pounds and possibly costing peoples jobs so they can have a lie in.

look at it this way, imagine how much a business makes in one day, times it by EVERY business in the country and you have the amount the UK economy lost, in the current situation it isnt an option for shops or businesses to close so when they cant operate cause staff are all off and most of them could have made it in means they didnt care about who they worked for anf therefore the people who you say are enjoying a life without the stress of a non money ruled society are the same people who are in a job that they dont care about, who are the real loosers there?

Ok, youve made loads of fair points there, but I must say that business owners are themselves, normally, very selfish and greedy. They normally do anything to get their hands on money, and would rather their employees die on the way to work, than them not trying at all. Of course, Im over-exaggerating, but the big-time business-owners really can be twatish.
Id also like to add that my uni has an online system, that lets me see exactly what Ive missed, so I can check and do the work while Im at home for, Id like to stress, one day. So, why would I go in when my lecturers cant be bothered to attend themselves? If Im selfish with this, so are most of the lecturers and other students. Also, the parents stressed that I shouldnt go, because of the crap preparation for the snow.

I just dont understand why money should be how our society works, when it causes so many stress-related deaths and worries. Yes, its useful for a trading system (hell, rocks are useful for this), but the way the government operate, to pay themselves to lounge around talking about the economy that is the basis of all problems, in a big, posh, I can shout about crap and everyone behind me will laugh at the other side halls. (Tangent much? Yes.)

Anyway, I understand and sympathise for the smaller businesses, but I couldnt care less about the bigger ones that are selling products to make double the profit that they need to make and things like that. You know, the bigger the company, the more chance they will try to rip people off. That is where the economy is wrong, and there are no laws to stop this. No limited profit margins...nout. So, the bigger businesses can toddle off to hell where they belong.

End of off-topic rant.

well i think zombie said some great things when he was talking about how his uni handled the snow, im not sure if they have a similair system for catching up on work tho, and i dont know how many ppl would be bothered to look at it

as for you arguement against money, its just how the world works, when survival of the fitest no longer applies to a species it will seek other ways of maintaining a society, hence the richer you are the fitter you are, and yes before you ask there are huge amounts of research to back this theory

its just one of those things like religeon or laws that helps us maintain a society, we are all programmed to function in that way as we are social creatures, sure its a nice idea to have a world of happiness and peace but its not possible for our species

Anyone have any problems today? Although there wasnt any snow in many parts, the day could still have been dangerous for many due to the snow becoming ice on the roads etc.

I thought there would be no classes today due to the website not updating on any status (and instead, stating that yesterdays classes were cancelled). However, an hour or so later (after Im scheduled to be in), it updates saying that its open. :

Its too late to worry about a bolshevik invasion ;) . That device (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sura_Ionospheric_Heating_Facility) is not a russian invention. The original concept was invented by germans, a device which was used for ionization of air and wave Manipulation/Utilization. It was used as a weapon to stop ignition-based aircrafts.
