View Full Version : ALT Costumes are DLC, and we need to PAY MONEY to "unlock" them?

Is this for real? Im not too optimistic when it comes to game companies. I know they are all about $$$ and all.
Although he doesnt out right say you gotta pay for the DLC. It seems likely, no?
DLC ALTERANTE costumes? Thats like having to PAY extra just to be able to use Hadoukens.

Sounds like you have to purchase. A little disappointing but whatever, its SF. Plus some of the alternate costumes are cool (Ryu, Zangief). Lets just hope they arent over priced instead.

Ive got no issue for the DLC. If I wanted to get extra stuff for the game, such as alternative costumes, then I can just buy them if I wanted, to add to my value of the game. I am sure there will be more DLC to come down the line, and I ve got no issue with that :)

That.absolutely.sucks.
I hope they put some in-game unlockable costumes and content besides the pay DLC. Paying to get the game is logical, paying to obtain some small in-game content as costumes is against fun. On top of that, most of this type of DLC is overpriced.

Overpriced and commonly on the disc already. Namco are popular with this, apparantly.
I would have imagined the extra costumes to just be standard unlockables. If theyre brand new that is different but for costumes that already exist on the arcade version to be paid DLC at home seems a little weird.
Ok this sucks. I was thinking and now the CE bonus DLC makes sense. They planned to milk people with DLC costumes already.
What next? DLC to use option settings? Alternate costumes are standard for 3d fighters.

If they do it with SF4, it makes sense, because otherwise how else would you play against someone online using your newly purchased costume? Its be way to costly from a resource perspective to get a player to download their opponents data and/or costumes when playing against them if theyve purchased one.
Soulcalibur did it and in that regard it worked well.
Capcom did it with Dead Rising as well =/

No its not. If they made special moves, jumping or online play as downloadable content then that would be the same. Costumes themselves are purely aesthetic and serve no purpose to gameplay whatsoever. Its hardly like charging to use Hadoukens. =/

I agree with you, but the Dead Rising costumes were free. ;)

Costly for them to make a second player download the data but then they charge consumers to unlock what is already on the disc. I see where youre coming from but theres always the option of making it unavailable if the other player doesnt have it. Consumers just dont really like paying to unlock stuff thats on the disc (unless youre plain lazy to unlock ingame like SCIVs weapons). Im not saying I wont pay for some downloads (as of yet I have never done so) but stuff thats already on the disc makes me less bothered to buy it. It depends on the DLC in the end.
It all depends on the type of DLC. To me the only type worth paying for is like Oblivion: Shivering Isles. Solid game to start with, and a nice DLC that adds good content.
Now, Tomb Raider Underworld. NOT a solid game to start with. Whats coming for the DLC should have been in the original release. Because the game is much shorter and lacking in unlockables than the previous games.
Horse armor, alt costumes, extra weapons, things like this would be classed as unlockables if this DLC crap hadnt taken over. The companies see this DLC as a chance to milk every cent they can, and they abuse it.
not sure if this has been mentioned - i dont think its official but it looks the costumes will be the DLC in
special edition pack

Its not a matter of whats on the disc though. When you purchase a game, youre purchasing a license to use the game, not the game and its coding itself. Thus, the license you purchase upon your initial buy of the game is to use all the content bar some additional content that developers have placed on the disc. Then, when the DLC is released, you have the OPTION (Yes, you dont HAVE to buy it guys!) to purchase an additional license to access that additional content.
The delivery of the game itself is irrelevant. If it werent disc based I doubt this would be as much of a, well, issue.
Ugh.
Soul Calibur 4 might have charged for extra costumes, but there were already a hella load of extra alt costumes and unlockable items to put on them.
If SF4 doesn;t have just as many this will be an undeniably rip off move.
Im guessing its just a mistranslation of the interview though, he probably means in game money from beating people, maybe the community manage here can clear this up.
Like the rest of the internet sites that has a similar topic I disagree with Capcoms decisions
I am willing to pay for additional content that the game developers have worked on after the games release, however I think it is unfair to make fans pay for content that is already on the disc. Having content that is already on the disc that users have to pay for is as simple as charging fans for the hell of it. Microsoft or Sony will end up with a cut of the profit and in the end fans will have to pay for it.
Paying for future content that involves additional work by capcom = OK
Paying for content that has already been made as part of Street Fighter = Unfair
Why is this practice not seen as unfair?

You are right exka2, it is unfair! They might as well raise the game price and add the content directly or, cut the price for people who do not necesseraly want to buy those features!!
I made the a topic about this on Capcom Unity and it got closed down. Seems really shady.
Its poor and another example of DLC getting out of hand. I expect as much content as possible out of the box for my money, not hold stuff back to charge more later.
I asked again on Capcom Unity and got the response That will be revealed in good time... not yet. Sorry.
So its pretty safe to assume its gonna cost money.
