This report isnt really that intresting, just says playing together is better than playing online, nothing japan specific

I think the main reason is that a large percentage of western gamers dont want to try anything different. Where as in japan if a mate said hey i just got monster hunter it rocks, theyd be willing to try somthing different. Where as people in america or aus would say pfft doesnt look like call of duty or halo so i wont play it. And this is why it hasnt taken off because not many people have found the best part of monster hunter = playing with mates.

Sure im generalising but you know its true

ah the old popularity breeds popularity syndrome, i never really thought of it as a western trait but your right

monster hunter could be more popular, if it was advertised better for the west. in Japan, they have tv ads, magazine ads, alot of awareness about the franchise, we dont get that here in the uk.

Monster Hunter 1 ps2 had a lot of advertising, I remeber some sky/blueyonder channels showing adds for it, as it was the adds that made me want the game.

Maybe, its because the game is Japanese?
Did anyone think of that?
(Besides the fact that where I live Monster Hunter is amazingly popular)

I have personally have never seen any ads for any of the MH series on TV, and unless you know exactly what to search on the web, theres little chance that youll find it by accident. My friend introduced it to me, and now Im completely hooked on it. That was the way its found in the UK, by word of mouth, and in the west, people stick to the bigger titles that have been around for years, and that we all can know and trust to give us a good time. Capcom is just seen as a new kid on the block in the UK.

Capcom needs a bigger advertising campaign in the UK, on the big channels, and not on some obscure one tucked away on Sky which no one watches. Just my opinion here, and seeing as I dont even know what Im talking about, Im sure therell be people who disagree with me.

Well, in my part of the UK I only know of 5 people other than myself who own a copy of any of the Monster Hunter series. Whenever I talk about Capcom, other people just turn around and say, Who?

As far as some people are concerned, theyre not very well known and so theyre not willing to give Capcom a try. Im glad I did, keeps me entertained at night when I cant sleep. :p

When I said new-kid, I meant thats what people think Capcom is, because hardly anyone in my area knows them. Theyre all Halo and CoD players, and cant be bothered to give something different a try. If Capcom did a more intensive advertising campaign on the channels which everyone has (For example, I only have BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and Channel 4), then theyd gain notoriety, and therefore people will talk about them more, and become one of the favourites to turn to for games, like EA and the others.

I thought Capcom werent well known in England, but I guess thats just my area :p I try and get some people interested in MH series, but they all dont have a clue what Im on about.

you sure they aint heard of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry or even Megaman?!?

I mean monster hunter i can understand, i got into it because a mate knew someone who was playing monster hunter in a park and thought it looked intresting so we did a little digging about the game but they should have at least heard of capcoms other games.

Strange I remeber playing Capcom games back on the spectrum in the late 1980s

I was playing Street Fighter II in the early 90s... If people havent heard of them, I think they arent paying much attention - although it does seem to be a trend for big companies to not advertise much around here either, instead relying on word of mouth and established fan bases...

Ouch, I must really live in a crappy area then :p

Apologies guys, I thought they werent well known in the UK. Just turns out that I live in a place for dull people  .

shoryuken one of them and then say. remember this?! thought so...
but i do understand what you are saying, children these days get a pc, a fps and know nothing else, tsk tsk tsk, missing the good things in life. (this is partially sarcasm for anyone who didnt notice ;) )
but here (Portugal) advertisement on games is a bit weak, i knew of mh because me and some friends just stumbled on it, thank heavens.
well, i cant complain, at least we get the games=3

Capcom = huge .

MH, probably due to a poor advertising campaign, which would of been fine for a second or thrid game as there would of been a fan base like there is now.
And being honest I have not even read a mag with anything about MH in it.
Plus I believe games like this to carry a "geek" ish stigma with them...along the lines of World of Warcraft.

The way advertising works is that for every game we think we'll sell we get a small % that goes towards advertising. So for a big game like RE5 where we know we'll sell lots of games and have lots of money to advertise. For small games we'll have much less, what we don't want to happen is to spend loads of money on advertising only to find people don't want the game as it means that we'll make a loss on a game and ultimately our share price goes down and the company has less money to make new games with... bad for me, bad for you :-)

The good news is we have some really cool stuff lined up for MHFU which we hope will make it as big as it is in Japan. You guys are central to making that happen... all will be revealed soon!

I think that's because japanese fans like fantasy a lot! they love rpg's, with fictional worlds and fictional characters. They need to escape from their stressing reality by playing that kind of games in their intimate moments.

Japanese do like fantasy but then so does the west! Films like LOTR, Star Wars, Books like Harry Potter and Games like World of Warcraft we do love fantasy too!

What we don't do very well in the west is game with strangers, is someone sat with you on a bus and wanted to play a game, you'd be thinking "he's a mentalist"

What we need in the Uk is a place where people can turn up and know they'll meet like minded folk who want to play MHF together... what we need is a gathering hall!

"mentalists" unite!
gamers have a not-so-cool image in our society, and there is a certain sense of "shame" in playing on the streets, so that is indeed one large barrier for the games success.

I WANNA PLAY MORE!

lol when we chill out with monster hunter in the park or in town ppl always look down their noses at us, and ppl keep saying "oh your that guy who is into monster hunt" and that upsets me, not because im labeled but cause they never get the name right, shame on them i say!

oh and onlyonet... dont you like work for capcom or something? if so that is a very cheap blow to promote the gathering hall! (p.s. if you do work for capcom ask tenebra bout my wicked PR marketing idea, make it happen and theres a fruit-tella in it for you)
