View Full Version : ps2 was the most played console of 2008
PS2 was the most played console in 2008
Original Xbox also reported to have been played more than the PS3.
According to media research company Nielson, the PlayStation 2 was the most used video game console of 2008 (according to data gathered between January - October 2008).
The ageing juggernaut accounted for 31.7 per cent of the total time played from all gamers in the US, followed by the Xbox 360 with 17.2 per cent and the Wii at 13.4 per cent. Perhaps not a great surprise given its current installed base is the fact that the PS3 accounted for only 7.3 per cent of total usage and was beaten by the original Xbox which achieved 9.7 per cent. The GameCube also made the list, accounting for 4.6 per cent.
The remaining 16.2 per cent is accounted for by other video game consoles found in the home.

Good old PlayStation 2, man do I miss it -_- It kind of makes sense to a degree. Some people still arent in the current gen and stick with the PS2 since it was the previous best seller and has a huge backlog of games and also current gen owners might also play for nostalgic reasons.

I got Yakuza 2 on christmas, was trying to play the 1st one before the 2nd, but the stupid ps3 freezes when i play Yakuza 1. Oh well.... the good old Ps2 is still needed :)

Id prefer an older PS2 over the Slim ones any day. Seriously, they overheat so much, and have a horrible disc tray >.<
Only do this if you truly want to.

Like I say, it is entirely up to you. Let me know tomorrow if you still want to, and we can sort something out if you wish.
There are more than 140 million of PS2 units worldwide, the production of games for this console hasnt stopped yet, so its not a surprise... My fat one is now on the sitting room acting has a DVD player and occasionally to play some nostalgia, Resident Evil 4 and GTA: San Andreas, among others...
I think I can say that I play PS2 and PS1 games more than any other...except maybe gamecube games. I mean, they really are the best games out there so far. They didnt concentrate on a specific game detail (graphics, controls) so much, and so, you got the best of both worlds.
Im waiting for some great RPGs to come to next gen right now...

Great Rpg s, buy a Xbox360, then ull have plenty. Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey ( Best one by far ), Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant ( on PS3 also ), Eternal Sonata and many more. PS3 has not many, cause most of them r xbox exclusives.
I have a 360 already, but I just dont like these RPGs as much as the past ones. I love Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon, but other than that I mean.
Lost Odyssey just seems quite bland and war-ish (with war being one of the most boring and useless things to ever exist (who wants to help the Government, when they can solve their own problems? - Ill stop there)).
The only thing thats making me keep up to date with the consoles is the horror genre, at the moment. I just think that the other genres seem to be floundering in the everyone loves graphics or swinging a remote around era. Im just hoping that horror games keep coming and more traditional RPGs are introduced.
I didnt start this off as a rant...didnt mean to, anyway.

Lost Odyssey is meant to be one of those crying games. Still THE game I want a 360 for. Blue Dragon from what I heard is very standard JRPG. Nothing special.
Eternal Sonata is PS3 too, by the way.
Anyway, Ill still be going back to my PS2 thanks to other games I still havent played yet (MegaTen, Person 3 and 4, Dragon Quest VIII etc). Too bad these games look horrible on a HDTV. Whod of thought Id really want a CRT now....

Lost Odyssey take a bit to get into but once your got to disc 2 the game starts to show it self more and is well worth it.
Blue Dragon Loved this game very good got into it straight away.
Has Eternal Sonata been released in europe yet on PS3? I want it as it has more stuff in it but still the 360 version is under œ10 now new.

Its due out soon. Ill probably wait for it to drop in price. Its as if every game drops in price a week after release.

Eternal Sonata is a horrible game (at least from a story perspective) and hopefully theyve made it a bit more, well, less crap with the PS3 re-release.
As for the PS2? I can safely say I didnt touch it in 2008 =/
Ok, Ive decided to buy Lost Odyssey, because Ive found it cheap. I also need to fill my RPG void.
Imo, Eternal Sonata had a great story, as well as music, characters and graphics. It still wasnt up there with the older RPGs, but its still worth a playthrough.

Couldnt of said that better myself, but youre in for a nice treat with Lost Odyssey. I promise you this ;)
As for the PS2 being the mostp layed for 2008. It was not a no-brainer really. Afterall, theres over 100,million of them out over the globe :d

Eternal Sonata is not a 360 exclusive either. In my opinion there hasnt been a great current gen role playing game yet. Blue Dragon is mediocre, so are IU and Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata is a matter of personal taste and Lost Odyssey may be considered good if one can relate to its characters.

Wouldnt really say the PS2 was the most played. Id say it was either the 360 or the Wii. I dont really hear of many people playing their PS2s anymore.

Umm how can they tell whose playing what? I dont get it.
Probably online polls or something. Anyone have any proper idea?

Well, I guess you can say the source can be shaky, since their pc information is clearly wrong when you look at Steams information on most played games, so I would assume it could of been bodged or perhaps bias, who knows. But it wouldn;t surprise me to see the PS2 being the most console played in the year because of how many of them are around the globe.
