Moved to General Forum.
Please post topics in the correct areas, it only takes a quick search of the Forum Homepage to figure out what fits where.
Wow! He´s crazy talented, hacked Iphone at the age of 17 and now this? Kudos to him. I know hacking is bad but you´ve gotta earn him some respect.
Im really curious about the fact that his hack allows BWC to newer models of the system. Does this mean sony can bring up BWC anytime, but its only a marketing plan to sell more ps2 units or to bring ps2 games on to PSN so you have to buy those games second time?! Shame sony.
Btw im not worried that ps3 will be hacked in numbers similar to wii or xbox but only if that hack will still require the hardware update. Ps3 is too expensive for people to experiment on it with hardware. Varanty would be broken.
im guessing that when he said that theres a bit of hardware needed as well, that that hardware is needed to do the BWC. Be real bad for sony if it was purely software though, which could easily be the case.
He must be very intelligent and talented with hardware/software.
Congratulations to Sony engineers for making such a secure system, but one day this would happen.

Its somewhat surprising it was the most secure system, considering that you can choose what browser to put into it like linux.

I was discussing this with a few friends. It's not surprising it's happened. It's surprising it took this long. After all, most consoles are done with pretty quickly so definitely props to Sony for going this long. Clearly they were doing something right. Of course, props to that guy, especially considering his age and all. Smart guy, that's for sure.
It'd be a real shame if backwards compatibility could be activated with such ease that Sony basically screwed everyone else over. Part of me wishes this prompts Sony to actually give it back to the people...random thought, what if the PS2 emulation was part of the key to breakthrough and thus the removal in the first place.
The thing I really hate is, people were texting in to Radio 1 news saying that he was an idiot. These people are missing the point entirely, not everyone wants to pirate games; having a tiny, powerful and cheap linux server would be reason enough.

To me I don't think it will be useful at all, I mean I keep my consoles intact, I simply don't bother doing modifications that don't bring me benefit at all.
Even if it would bring BWC, I would rather keep the firmware original and wait for the official support, or keep moving to the living room where the PS2 is now located.

This is the flaw in most arguments on hacking. It doesn't matter if you aren't pirating games, hacking a console for "other reasons" or for "legal homebrew" is in itself illegal.
On the hack side of things, even though its hard to do and you need the equipment, that's not the big point: the end-user won't use this hack, they'll be using the hacks made from this exploit by hacking groups. Pretty soon there will be custom firmware hacks like on the PSP system that will work on any ps3 system, which of course is the main problem as people have raised.
I found this article quite interesting:

It explains a lot :)

Good article, thanks Joao :D
apparently sony are "investigating" the hack but i'm not sure to what extent. i read that the reason it was hard to hack was because of the firmware but the link says otherwise. If it was just firmware, sony could just update it over and over to slow down the growth of the ps3 hackers. But not that many people are bothered to go out and fiddle with hardware so i don't expect this to get out of hand.
it was quite funny reading the article explaining everything sony and IBM did to prevent this. i can just imagine them sitting at a table and thinking up a bunch of traps and convoluted designs they could use to foil intruders.
it was inevitable really.
Sony will be looking into this no matter what.
Blu-ray secure system has not been hacked/cracked but if it is that will and can be updated by the firmware unlike the Hotz hack.
So really all that would come out of this is copied download games which is bad enough but at least the main blu-ray games won't be copied.
To combat this would to have a secure console license system if at all possible.
I wonder if Sony would be able to pick ps3's up that have been cracked like MS do with the 360. (both MS and the hackers update the hacks and detection methods)
No system will ever be 100% secure
Ps1, Ps2, Xb, xb360 Wii amongst others are all terrible for hack and cracks in the past.
Their will always be people who take the risk but my I prefer to pay for my software and know indirectly it's gone to the developer/publishers. Also to have the Real copy and Packaging is important for me.

Lol, that reminds me of my friends hacked ps1. After he hacked it, all games were in black and white, quite unique :D. Can you imagine silent hill or resident evil only in black and white? It could be really cool!
Yeah, two of my classmates have xbox360, one refused to hack his for some time but he realized he does not have the funds to feed the console so he decided to hack it(didnt do it yet), the other one bought the console just for the reason its hackable. Other than those two, im the only one in class who has an unhacked console(and the only one who has a console), my ps3 and i like it that way. If you dont have money for your console, dont buy a console, thats my motto.
