View Full Version : MH3 - My thoughts about Splitscreen...

Greetings to all! I want to share my thoughts about Splitscreening in MH3.

First of all, its a very great idea from Capcom to make the game splitscreen-playable Offline! I know I will play this game more, even when the servers will shut down (lol).
If you are adding Splitscreen, then make it so the players dont need to be in the same place as the other. And one player can go on a quest while the other stays in town OR goes on his/her quest, dont restrict them this way...
And make it so that it can be joinable in progress. When the player is in town, the other presses the Start button, the screen splits and he/she chooses their character to get into the game.
Ohhh... and it would be nice to be able to play the game Online playable WHILE it is splitscreen, so... 2 players Splitscreen are playing with other 2 people (who are playing splitscreen or on one-one consoles) Online!

Second of all... I know this is a thing that one fan says (me :P), but the Monster Hunter series is always compared to the Phantasy Star series. Personally I like MH better, but now Ill compare too. Theres a PS game, namely Phantasy Star Online which came out in 2002 for GameCube. That game has 4 player Splitscreen offline cooperative mode! And it can be played on the Wii too because of its backwards compatibility.
What Im trying to tell is that make the game (MH3) to be able to play it with 4 players Offline. It would make the game better and stuff.
Now I know you want to argue me about that, like No way because the screen will be tiny and we cant see what were doing, but come on! In this world most of us have HDTV-s which are very big TV-s (I dont have one but nvm), and can see lots of stuff on it, even if its small! But you dont need a big a** TV for 4 player splitscreen! There are the MH games on the PSP, on that tiny little screen, and you can see everything!!! If you compare it to a TV screen then the PSPs screen could fit into a TV more than 4 times! (Mines like 7-8, maybe 9 times)

So please just add the option to be able to play the game with 4 players offline splitscreen, it wont hurt you, it will just make your fans (like me) happier! :)
(If you cant add it because the game would lag then lower the graphics a bit, PSO did the same :) )

Phantasy star is more awesome than monster hunter tbh but the psp version lvl up too quickly, sucked all the hours out of it, was in its prime in online episode 1&2 imo

i dont like the idea of one person being in a town while other is on a quest, i dont see the point at all, but splitsceen online like mario kart would be awesome

MH3 is more awesome, because you need skills to play the game and MH doesnt need lock-on :)

One person could be in the town doing something, or go to another quest, or not and the players could go together. But the option to go on separate ways is good, dont leave it out because noone would do such a thing. You cant predict something like that.

And were talking about MH3 (not Mario Kart, thats cool too), and I hope the creators of MH3 will read this topic (or tell them this idea I wrote down), because it only makes the game better :)

Ive just found a picture on Destructoid:

http://www.co-optimus.com/images/upload/image/2009/re5_split.jpg

My advice: Dont do something like this!!! If you want to split the screen then draw a vertical or horizontal line, and one player goes here and the other there, NO BLACK SPACES BETWEEN THEM!!!
...or make it so players can choose how they want to split their screens!!!

Actually that split screen is designed to cut out stretching caused by just reducing one parameter, its far more awesome and the fact that resi has done it in a way thats shifted one on the right the other on the left gives it a far more custom and proffersional feel

besides i thought you were up for 4 player slipt screen, thats still bigger than 1/4 screens

I wrote that because I dont think that it looks too good (Ive played with Call of Duty 5 and it was horrible... the splitscreen aspect too), and I meant that if the game will be 2 player Splitscreen.

I still want 4 player splitscreen :)

what do you mean you dont think it looks good? that doesnt quite make sence to me seeing as how it was designed to look good

would you prefer the age old problem of running sideways faster than funning forwards?

MH is not a game for Splitscreening i think. Maybe offline via LAN, or online like always, but no Splitscreen.

What act of idiocy made you think of split screen monster hunter? SK pretty much summed up everything i would have said, with less insults, so Ill leave it at that.

Sinister:

I think that it doesnt look good because if you have a TV thats big, then use the whole screen instead of cropping out somethings (as I wrote it earlier, dont have black empty spaces onscreen)

Silentkiller:

Why not SplitScreen? Its a very good thing to have, in the early days there was no LAN, only Splitscreen, and people (like me) loved it. Not everyone is a millionaire to have 2 Wii-s and TV-s and stuff, you know...
(BTW LAN/System Link is a good thing to have, cuz Online wont last forever :) )

THIS act of idiocy made me think of it: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41426.html
If you really like MH then you should see all the info about it and dont insult something you dont know..........

the black spaces vary on tv sizes but like i said they are neccesary, the game will not be nearly as realistic if its all squashed up, i hope there will be a online multiplayer and then this wont really be an issue, but enough of resi 5.

On my TV they look huge in CoD5, and I hope they will be better in Resi 5 (which WILL have Online coop, they said it)

Back to MH:

If they put something in the game then they do it because it is needed. So the game NEEDS SplitScreen, lots of people are happy because of it, I dont get it why you would drop it out...

Monster Hunter games r based on Online gameplay, which would be useless if theres a 4- Player Splitscreen. Why would u have to play online if u have 3 more friends at home ? And also i wouldnt like having a smaller screen x2, just 1 big screen for myself with loads of monster blood and my mighty and holy presence in my shiny dragon knight armor.... and only me ^^

the small screen doesnt really bother me, hell ive been playing it on a psp so im happy with 2 player co-op but any more than that is too much

Yes, the game is based on online play, just like Phantasy Star Online (yes I compared again). That game had many online players, and now that the servers are off they can only play splitscreen (4 players!) or search for private servers.

I didnt say to kill online mode, but it will die in time and you will be left with 2 players instead of 4. And like Sinister said: the small screen doesnt really bother me, the PSPs screen can fit 5-6 or more times into a TV screen. And thats more than 4 players!

Yes but if u think about it a little bit .... The PSP is designed for that, a big 42 HD TV has no small screen..... on PSP it doesnt bother me aswell cause im holding it in my hands, its not that far away to be small . And no, the servers might be online forever, capcom just should set up a monthly fee for online players, like 9.99? / month or 100? / year ( cheaper price ).

I thought about it many times, and if I can play Serious Sam on a Computer with 8 players splitscreen, then I would IF I HAD THE CONTROLLERS AND PLAYERS. Just because a screen is bigger than a PSP screen doesnt means that you cant split it 2-4-8 times... Lots of monitors, TV-s and stuff doesnt designed to play splitscreen games, yet they still make those (and Im quite happy about it)
About the monthly fee: I dont think that I have the luxury to pay for a game to play it, and not many players have it... Then I could only play it via Splitscreen, and MH is meant to be 4 players, so 2 player Splitscreen is not a good option here ;)

You may as well say why have friends who also enjoy videogames. The wii is a console that focuses upon communal play and Monster Hunter is built around the same ideal. However, were I to take your reasoning: why then was MHF made?

The first Monster Hunter title originally supported split screen before it was pulled due to technical difficulties and if memory serves me correctly - one of the original trailers showed four player split screen in action.

Nevertheless, splitscreen seems to function well enough within MH3.

I didnt know that MH1 supported 4player SplitScreen... Are you sure? Might as show some proof or something :D
If they canned the 4 player SplitScreen, they shouldve added 2 player at least...

And now that MH3 will be SplitScreen playable, they should put 4 players in it, but 2 players is a MUST (and that those 2 players could play online while they are in SplitScreen :) )

Trying to locate the original PS2 trailers/videos amongst the endless amounts of MHF/2 drivel is making that somewhat challenging. However, it may actually be within the Videos segment upon the MH1 disc? if memory serves me correctly. It may have been the first TGS trailer. I shall continue to hunt around anyway, but I am sure I saw a 4 way split-screen in effect.

Edit: Found it. First TGS trailer. (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/2337.html) It could simply be a camera effect - but it is split 4 ways and everyone is in motion.

Looks crap, I wouldnt use it

TheReaperCooL

Its just an effect from the looks of it, but it looks nice, thanks for the video :)
If they would add it into the game they should make a tinyer HUD (a bit tinyer), and make a camera view that is a bit far away.
Just look at the video in FullScreen, you can see everything (and its not using the whole screen and stuff!!!)

So in my opinion, doing 4 player splitscreen is still an option, and I would play the game thatway if I can (remember that I would get 3 other players with the same opinion as me to play the game via splitscreen :) )
