As much as I love Resident Evil 5, I still think Resident Evil 4 is a better, harder, longer (until the Gold Ed. anyway) and darker game than RE.5.

So lets have a vote.

Which do you think is better RE.4 or RE.5? :chin:

Resident Evil 4.

Because RE5 was out date when it was released, it's a copy with co-operative mode. But game mechanics are old.

aaaaaah! you can't make me decide!!!

oh, i just did....
i said RE5 only because it makes more sound when you walk.
oh and there's Excella Gione!!!!!
some of the old forum members might remember that excella was my
profile picture before cloaked jill came and stole her spot.

even with that, the difference to me is minimal, if someone told me i could only live with one i would kill myself... and donate my body to science

RE4, it has a better story, the atmosphere is better & has more of a horror feel to it, better creatures, actually has some puzzles, and the Mercenaries mode on RE4 just smashes RE5s all over the shop, I like replaying the story, this list can go on & on but I will stop.

The only thing keeping me on RE5 is Versus.

Nothing can keep me on re5, i beat the campaign, thats it, i have no interest in versus and to be honest, there are better online games than re5 versus. I ussualy never play a campaign second time and if yes, i dont even finish it and RE4/5 is no exception.

I´ve also beaten re4 and although i played it on PC(with a controller, AWFUL graphics - bad port from consoles)it was still better than re5 - darker, liked the vendor, great inventory system and most importantly, no sidekick. Ashley was a pain in the real but you could at least feel the tension when someone captured her and you had to save her while dealing with enemies all around you. Having sheva around just ruins the game for me... but i still like re5, its great with stunning cutscenes and graphics :)

Tbh RE4 & 5 are the worst in the series but thats just my opinion, I play REmake & RE2 more often than 4 & 5.

Versus isn't that bad if you have a good partner & you dont come across player killers in Slayers, Survivors is good but again, without a good partner its frustrating & is easier if you use control Type B.

I agree its not the best MP game.

RE5 SPOILERS AHOY!

Oooh, trickier than meets the eye.

It depends on what version we're talking about here, the Wii Edition of RE4 was a heck of alot smoother as far as controls go, but then again, the wand for PS3 may put RE5 on par with that.

As far as story goes, RE4 was memorable but was no real addition to the plot, just an expansion on the Ada and Leon plotlines, I suppose one could argue it was forerunning the RE5 Type 2 Plagas, but overall, it was purely complementary. Whereas RE5 had a great deal for the fans to chew on, plenty of questions where answered but it felt somewhat incomplete, like they held back on a few undue areas, hopefully the two Gold Edition scenarios will fill in some of the broader holes, maybe some ingame files and suchlike will answer some questions? who knows...

The menu system of RE5 was pretty messed up, the fact it forced you to select quickly was fun but the specifics where unwarranted, of course you wanted to equip the ruddy handgun! why would you want to combine or discard it? should have really had one button for purely equipping, one for a wider array of options. Whereas the RE4 menu system was a travesty on the original game, it was brilliant to prioritise items of weapons, but in RE4, loaded purely with guns? in an attaché case Leon seemingly holds inside his haircut? they really fumbled that one.

Sheva had a very lazy AI system you had to manually control, thats probably the biggest let down of RE5. I've got a broader knowledge of AI now, and simply having "ATTACK" and "STAND STILL AND ATTACK" as manual selections where pretty lacking, fun with another player, but very short on options, and no option to go it alone either. I suppose thats the major difference between 4 and 5, RE4 was brilliant in that you didnt have to drag Ashley all the time, they knew the squeely vulnerable side-kick would be irritating, and I applaud all the parts where you had to cover her or tell her to hide, and the way she kept getting removed for plot purposes, it really pushed it forward instead of "YOU FOUND THE GIRL, YOU WIN!".

RE4 had some awesome and memorable moments, doing battle with the Verdugo, fighting with Krauser, the hedge maze, the first run in with Ganados, finding mangled corpses of the unfortunate along the way, short of scares, but I remember these as being some of its finer points. I suppose RE5 had a few moments, but it seemingly ran dry in the boss department and they didnt do much with Wesker, only the "Wooooo, im back!" routine, his boss fights and the ending where pretty disappointing, but I did like the reappearance of Lickers, the first Uroboros boss fight and the fight with Jill and Wesker to name a select few.

So the better one? Unless they tweak up RE5, RE4 will be ever so slightly superior.

@ Dante2014, you can have a quick weapon/item button, the d-pad, as long as the weapon/item is in the corresponding slot in the inventory.

Example.
Top middle slot = R. Launcher. = d-pad up.
Left middle slot = Handgun. = d-pad left.
Right middle slot = SMG. = d-pad right.
Bottom middle slot = F. Aid Spray. = d-pad down.

Yeah, I am aware of that, but there are times where I collect something that I want to use, but can't properly select it because its not in a slot that corresponds to a key, not necessarily a weapon, as well as trying to fruitlessly organise items Sheva has collected, given up et cetera, and I always notice the mess up during a fight.

Ahh I know what you mean now, yeah it can get awkward trying to get a item out, like if a Cephalo sprouts up & you try getting to a F. Bang with enemies breathing down your neck.

I would probably say Resident Evil 4 because that is the one I have played the most.....though I really wish you could kill Ashley, she was just annoying.

Another thing I liked more about Resident Evil 4 was they seemed to put much more effort into The Mercenaries, sure it is a bonus feature but I love it. I just feel they were pretty lazy in Resident Evil 5 since most characters are just clones in a different suite. Bring back HUNK, Ada and add some new characters!

And what about Krauser in mercenaries? It was the first time in the series you can use a super-powered character. In two words: VERY COOL.

And much better than Wesker, that has no super powers in-game. :shameonyou:

I don't think either of them are very good, gameplay-wise, to be honest. Resident Evil used to be more fear-terror. Now it's sheer panic-terror - Oh no, I've used up my excessive amount of bullets for my pistol! I'd better switch to my shotgun! Oh no, my shotgun rounds are spent! I better whip out my Rocket Launcher, or god forbid, Laser Cannon.

Story-wise, RE4 felt incredibly lackluster, as though the entire game was just a feeble attempt at Leon and Ada fanservicing. Which I guess it managed to do succesfully? He was a far likeable character as a police officer, now as a 'uber 1337 secret service' agent he's come off as rather cliche and boring as opposed to unique and 'badass', quite evident in the CGI movie.

I'm half-expecting a Wesker clone to appear in the future, too. Most people honestly don't believe me when I tell them how RE5 ends, either. I mean, I could barely believe it when I myself did it.

You are talking about story, what about gameplay?

TechDemon
16-01-10, 15:10
I thought my comment on the panic terror as opposed to actual fear terror was enough in regards to gameplay. The controls work for the behind the shoulder view, but I still think it's too different. While I am aware that it would probably entail a lot of backtracking, which most people don't like, RE4&5 feel like they're much weaker with puzzles too, too.

I preferd Resi 5 as it got rid of the dreadful merchant which I hated and also re-introduced the liker.

I enjoyed Resi 4 but i felt it was a bit to cheesy with the merchant.

Voted for RE4.

RE5 was an RE4 with better graphics. I'm not talking about the Wow factor of RE4, but RE5 wasn't even that scary, since in the game you are never actually alone, even with a partner like the Brain dead Shiva. Also the inventory was downright awful. Perhaps they thought that making everything take one slot will reduce the time spend in inventory management, but with that Brain Dead partner, it did just the opposite.
The Co-op was good, but it should be an extra! Not a necessity!

I also came across many problems when completing levels in CoP. The first time I played the game, I was the CoP Shiva, and there was a couple of stages were the stage didn't count as passed (no trophy given ether). Despite playing the whole game with my cousin, the first stage, the one whit the track driving, and the one with the final boss didn't gave me a completion time or trophy...
Now I have to play those stages alone while babysitting Shiva... It's a pain in the ass.

I also didn't like how the game gave you the ability to grind.

Capcom should play Dead Space and see how a current generation horror game should play like.

Or maybe they should look at SH and see how a scary horror should be?
Anyway, I prefer RE4, because the story is actually good. The characters are interesting and Ashley provides a bit of difficulty and survival to the game.
If they added a bit of co-op to Resi 4, I think it would have been a perfect game...

RE4. I played it so many times the campain and RE5 with its multiplayer features and interviews saying this game will make play a hundred times, finished once and never touched it again unless for the mercenary mode. But still it didnt last long as it did with RE4.
RE5 is a good game by any means but loved more RE4.

I think both Games are quite great ...
But for me its gone more away from the main Resident Evil Feeling @ Playing.
At both of the Games i missed the Horror Feeling.
Sure the Cutscenes were great,
The Enemies and Story good as well,
but i wouldt have the scary feeling by Re4 or 5.
I know Survival Horror is a big Description,
but for me Re4 and 5 are more setting on Action than anything else...

Seems Resident Evil 4 is still in the lead. Personally I don't think there was anything terribly wrong with Resident Evil 5. It just lacked some of the classic "Resident Evil magic", which Resident Evil 4 managed to keep. I would also agree with the people that have said that Resident Evil 5 wasn't scary; it was more just full on action.

i am considering changing my answer...
AAAAHHHHH it's too hard! can't decide!

if re5 had more locations and longer gameplay i think it would help it out a lot.
i played re4 so many times because after you finish the first time, you've already forgotten what happened in the beginning. After 3 times the game still felt fresh and new, whereas re5 is done in a flash.

There's no option for "slightly better" for RE4 or RE5. I don't consider one much better than the other, RE4 has more atmosphere, RE5 is similar to the RE4 gameplay, with a few add-ons. It didn't disapointed me, but the fear when the Ganados surrounded Leon and Claire in that house after the village, or how I felt small in the castle with the catapults scenes, man that I never found in RE5...

RE4 = Ganado

RE4 & RE5 have exactly the same basic enemy, just they have different names (for the country they are in).

There are no Zombies in RE4 or RE5.

I have to say one of the best bits in Resident Evil 4 is where you get trapped in the house. Can anyone else remember there first time in the house; low ammo, unsure where they will break in, quickly barricading the windows. That bit alone made the game worth buying.

Hey hey! Dont you dare talk about Valve games in that way!:whackangry:
Its like a personal insult! If left 4 dead wasnt a great game, it wouldnt have a sequel so soon and such a great fanbase. And you cant compare resident evil 4 which is singleplayer with left 4 dead only multiplayer(yeah yeah, singleplayer campaign but its the exact same as multiplayer).
