This is one of my favorites Capcom Fighting games. It appeared with many different names, such as Vampire savior and Night warriors, so much, that it's hard to pinpoint which one is a sequel and which one is and updated version of an existing game.
It spawned an extremely crappy TV series in America an a very good 4 episode OVA in the Anime industry.
The game shows characters inspired from monsters of Cinema and Mythology, who fight in fast one on one maches like Street Fighter. The maches are fast, the animation is extremely detailed and smooth, and the moves are many. Some supers will actually make the enemy character take a unique form drawn exclusively for that particular Super.
If there is one draw-back that is the buttons combinations required to execute some super moves. They are way to many with most of them, never appeared on a fighting game before, so even a 2D fighting veteran should read a move list before using one character's super.
There are two compilation of those games out there:
One is a collection of all the darkstalker games released for the PS2 in Japan only.
The other is Darkstalker chronicles that was released for the Dreamcast and an updated version for the PSP. It did had all of the characters in darkstalker Universe, but it had no story or character encounters. It also didn't have a move list in the game, and the move list in the manual was missing moves. This is very bad in this game because some supers are very unique for the player to guess them and having to carry a guide book with the PSP version of the game kind of defeat the purpose of it being "Portable". It also changed the colors of most the stages making them uglier. You can play the stages in their original colors, but to do that you must press some special button combinations and it will be aveliable only in certain modes.:bash:
Despite the bad PSP version, the game was great and it will make you wonder why Capcom stopped making sequels for it...
