View Full Version : Advice on games to buy...

So, for Christmas I got a £20 gift voucher for GAME...and I'm stuck.
I have some ideas of what I'd like, but there are so many options that I'm just confuddled, and would appreciate advice on which games to look into getting.
I have every current generation console at the moment, including handhelds, so there's no problem with which platform to suggest a game for.
Some of the games I'm looking at are:
Modern Warfare 1 - Though I don't play online that much, so I'm not sure if it's worth it for Singe Player alone.
Dead Space: Extraction - I'm a big fan of the series, and really want this, but not sure if it's worth the £20 price tag.
Darkside Chronicles - This is an obvious one, and I'll get it eventually, but should I get this over every other game?
Liberty City Stories - Although I have yet to complete GTA4's main storyline, I'm very interested in the expansions.
Resistance: Retribution - Another series I'm a fan of, but really not sure whether I should get it...
And there are many more options, games you could probably suggest to me...I'm just so confused!

I would say (providing that you don't have it) instead of getting modern warfare 1 get modern warfare 2. As it has the added spec ops missions which increases the offline play. From your list I couldn't recommend any of them as I have not played any but MW1. But the game that I am most interested in out of the bunch is Resistance.
The other obvious thing would be to buy Batman AA if you havnt got it.
Ooh, I can't offer you much advice on those. I've only just (I think) worked out what to spend the rest of my M$ on - Portal and Ikaruga.

My problem is that I'd prefer to play the first game before I go through the second.
As I'm more interested in Single Player campaigns and storyline, would you still recommend MW1 as a good purchase?

Got it for the PS3 already :P I got it on day of release. Excellent game.

Portal is an excellent game. Though it's always better to buy yourself a copy of The Orange Box instead of just the single game.
i don't recommend modern warfare 1. MW2 is the exact same thing but with better graphics and more replay value offline. Just like what Sky_Dragon said, and special ops is quite fun. other than that, i would say Darkside chronicles. If you are going to get it anyway then get it now...
if i had to recommend a game not on your list, it would be Ratchet and Clank: Crack in time. even if you aren't a fan of the series, it is really funny and has some INGENIOUS PROGRAMMING. (not that i know anything about programming, but there are some really complicated and smart puzzles you can solve by using time)
Forgetting who I work for, I'd honestly recommend RE The Darkside Chronicles. One of the very few games I've played through several times, great fun.
Watch out with Ikaruga Soop,
It's quite the punishing, hardcore Bullet hell shooter.
This coming from a guy who quite enjoys himself with the "Touhou" games on pc from time to time..
As for helping TZM..I can't...
With the exception of Darkside chronicles, none of these games look even remotely interesting to me. (The liberty city episodes maybe, but they can't fix the broken "reality" system that ruined the GTA game and made Saint's row II my perfect GTA game.)
Since you're not into extensive Multiplayer, I won't reccomend Left 4 Dead 2 or any of the major titles I'm playing.
I can recommend Modern Warfare 2, but not 1, since I've never played it. But I have to say, I don't feel like I lost anything plot-wise.
@Jarlino - I love my bullet-hell shooters, and I can't see anything else as frenetic as Ikaruga on XBLA. Perhaps the closest was actually smash TV IMO. I didn't like the Geometry Wars Demo much, and Rez is more like space Harrier.
But I've played Ikaruga before on the Dreamcast and it blew my socks off. One of my favorite games I think. DYK, it was only about 4mb in size?
*Will edit this post in an hour or so, when checking the size of the file at home*
(Though by that time you could check the size on the Xbox live marketplace on the Xbox.com site ;) )
On the subject of Bullet Hell games, Diogo (Charmed69) has Mushishime Futari, the sly importer that he is. <_< *Jealous*
I have just started borderland and I am enjoying that at the moment.
In that list, Darkside chronicles.
I never played Modern Warfare in single, but from what I heard by friends, they were pretty enthusiast about single player campaign.
I reccomend Cursed Mountain for the Wii.
I hear Tenebra's a huge fan of it too.:p

That's how my friend got his copy of Ikaruga; His best mate runs (or at least did last time I saw him) an import business, while siphoning off the cream for himself :)
I forget most of the stuff he had, but suffice to say he has more stuff than everyone I know put together. (although he's jealous of my PC Engine GT :D) I think one of his pride and joys was a couple of SNK fighting sticks. Think he has Radiant Silvergun, a white Saturn and .. uh Burning rangers maybe? Can't remember what's rare anymore.
Has anyone sugested waiting until friday for bayonetta? that would seem sensible to me!

Got it for Christmas :P But I like to have multiple games on the run.

It's been tempting, but I'd like to wait for it to go down in price before I buy it.

Pre-ordered the PS3 Climax Edition about 3 weeks ago, should be turning up on Friday. But the PS3 stays with my fiancee back home whilst I'm at Uni.
The first Modern Warfare has an excellent narrative, much better than the bloated-with-hollywood sequel, I think you'd appreciate that one. Since the sequel is direct, I wouldn't touch that one until you've done the first.
Darkside Chronicles is excellent, played it to death in two days and unlocked everything, I think you'd appreciate its finer points regarding the plot, definitely better than Umbrella Chronicles, if only for the polish and, once again, excellent narrative.
Or you could save that voucher for Mass Effect 2, there's a nice collectors edition due.
Left 4 Dead is also an option, the original is repetitive but fun with a few friends online, but since you're not on Live that much, it'd be something of a waste, single player mode is not quite the same. As for the sequel, there's little connection to the first so it's not going to ruin anything, it is substantially better though.
I'm enjoying Dragon Age Origins too, free DLC and Mass Effect 2 armour for a new purchase. It's a nice familiar oldschool D&D type romp, just slightly bloodier, and it's huge.
Borderlands has two DLC out already, the Zombie Island Of Dr.Ned may appeal to you (Obviously, Mr.ZOMBIE Messia).
Uncharted 2 is quite fun, flows better than the original which felt like something that fell out of Sky Three, it's more action orientated but feels like a movie on par with the likes of James Bond and obviously Indiana Jones.
Thats all I can think of for now, in the words of the infamous fortunetelling 8-ball, ASK AGAIN LATER.

if you want liberty city/vice city stories i can send both of them to you if you want. If you wanna keep 'em you could send a crisp ten pound note to me ;) I dont play them anymore. better someone gets use out of them rather than them taking up space in my cupboard
edit: hold up, Ive just realised you meant the xbox version....I have it, tis good! not that Ive played it all that much. Offer still stands if you want the PSP games
As for a game you could buy, I got Borderlands for xmas and I can highly recommend it, if you can get another 3 people together it's an awesome experience!
Why on earth did you preorder the PS3 version of Bayonetta if you have a 360? you know about the PS3 version right?
Either way, skip modern warfare and resistance. I haven't played Dark side chronicles so I have have no opinion on that.
Liberty city stories is a good choice The Lost and the Dammed is far better then the main game of GTA4 and gay tony is the is the stupid dumb fun from San Andreas that GTA4 was missing. you really get the best of both from the GTA legacies with these two stories, a deep story about bikers, gangs and drug abuse and I dumb light hearted story that finds any excuse to throw you out of skyscrapers with a parachute. An awesome package.
Deadspace extraction is also really awesome, if you like Deadspace's story (which I don't personally like) it has the sort of story telling you are looking for. It's a lot more action packed but for a on rails shooters it's actually really creative with it's use of camera and interacting with the environment. There some awesome moments one of which I think you MUST see/experience....but I'm not telling you what it is.
I'd go with deadspace if I where you though. with bayonetta and mass effect 2 in the same month it's probably not a good idea to get something as heavy and long as liberty city stories. Deadspace extraction is the sort game you can play in between games. like a TV show. it's spilt into easy digestible chucks so you can play a chapter while you wait for food to be delivered or before you sleep, it's not very long so if you play it at leisurely pace it'll take you a week or two and you'll be happy when you finish it. Since Deadspace 2 is on the horizon it's a awesome way to remind you just how fun and rich deadspace was and keep you hyped till Deadspace 2 comes along.

Bayonetta is mostly for my fiancee. The PS3 stays with her whilst I'm at Uni, so it's best to buy it for that.
I'm not bothered about framerate issues, as long as the game is playable and I can understand the storyline, I'm all good.
Reading through all these posts, I'm getting the impression that the top contenders are:
Borderlands - Which I already have, so no biggie.
MW1 & MW2 - MW1 is going for £20 in GAME at the moment, which is why I'm tempted to buy it, considering it tends to go for £0 pre-owned and brand new.
Darkside Chronicles - Heavily tempting, for obvious reasons.
and to a lesser extent Dead Space: Extraction.
:matrix::chin:
I open a vote up to you guys:
MW1, DSC, or DSE?
Either way, skip modern warfare and resistance.
How dare you!
Those are excellent games, resistance in coop is even better, i´ve beaten the whole game with a friend, lots of fun. About modern warfare, singleplayer campaign is the best i played so far and multiplayer is addicting as counter strike/team fortress.
As s ps3 gamer, i recommend:
Resistance series(i own the first one, i will buy the second)
Uncharted series(today beaten the first one, i will buy the other later)
God of war collection
Batman: AA(ps3 version has exclusive joker levels)
Gta IV
Motorstorm: pacific rift(the first one is bad but pacific rift is really awesome)
Demons souls (must have, just MUST HAVE!)
Resident evil 5
Killzone 2(if you struggle between playing resistance and killzone, play first killzone, its different than resistance, slower but better... just play killzone first)
Ratchet and clank series is not my cup of tea, i liked the first hours of tools of destruction but i didnt find it that fun after a while... and i didnt like infamous demo (maybe because i played prototype first and i felt like a slug)
I don't see anyone not recommending Deadspace extraction. Problem with that game is nobody played it. it was a total bomb in sales, of all the rail shooters I've played on Wii it's my favorite. I haven't play Dark Side though.
You should totally ignore Modern Warfare, it's not a great singleplayer game. you have to play it online to understand the what makes the package so appealing.
What we need here is someone who's play through both Darkside and Extraction. I highly recommend Extraction. Umbrella Chronicles left me to sour to try Darkside. I ain't a avid fan of Resident Evil through so maybe someone with similar taste can fill us in on the comparison.

Many people call MW singleplayer one of the best singleplayer experiences ever, me included. Sure, its not that long but its so intense!! Yeah, MW multiplayer is awesome but nothing will happen if you try single, you will not regret, noone did.
Btw, if you are talking about MW2, i havent played that game so i dont know anything about it. But i expect its awesome like MW1.

I've got almost all of those games.
I have Resistance 1 & 2 on the PS3, but Retribution is a 3rd person PSP shooter. I want it, but I'm not entirely certain on it's worth compared to its price tag.
Killzone 2 was epic, much harder than Resistance, and was a good game.

It would indeed be useful to hear from someone that has played both games, as that may solidify my decisions.
If I had the money, I'd just get both (greedy as I am ;) ).
It is something that requires much thought...

Theres only one way, metacritics, look up the user and review scores and decide, nothing is better than average score of like 20 reviews.
Okay a little off topic but I'll explain my opinion.
If it wasn't for the multiplayer the singleplayer of Call of Duty 4 would be so forgettable to me. the one moment that stands out on it's own is the bomb going off.
like most shooters the maps in multiplayer are designed to give you the atmosphere of the singleplayer event, thus reminding you of these intense firefights. Booting up Call of Duty 4 a year later for the multiplayer give you a nostalgic feeling when you play the maps of the singleplayer. it works to make those moments feel more pronounced then what they really where.
Halo and Killzone 2 do the exact same thing.
MW2 takes this concept even further with Spec ops. it literally takes these moments and fuels with nostalgia. So when you play pipeline with a partner in a AC 130 it is made even more potent because you remember it from Call of Duty 4's multiplayer and then a layer beyond that, the singleplayer.
I do not believe Call of Duty 4 stands well as a singleplayer only game. MW2 does since it has the spec ops mode to subtitute for the multiplayer and add replay value.
Like I said I love the games. The multiplayer is what makes it worthy of purchase though. otherwise Modern Warfare 1 is a rental at best.

Ok assuming you only play offline. Good points of MW1, story is good, the sniper mission is a whole other level of epic, controls are simple and and easy to use, good graphics, voice casting was good, and the dialogue is excellent. Bad points short and can be a fairly easy complete depending on your skills, I found that there was not a lot of replay value (although I suppose finding the intels might take some time?).
MW2 good points: mostly as above, plus the added spec ops missions which improve its life span.
Bad points: Tries very hard to be the first game, often i found copying it. Some spec ops missions are only doable in 2 player. Again rather short ( completed it in 6hours on veteran).
Saying that though I would still rate 2 above 1 in terms of game play and I don't believe it's necessary to of played 1 to understand 2.
Depends what you want it for really? If it is just killing time until a game you really want comes out I would say get 1, if your looking for a slightly longer term get 2 and if possible get both why not. Can always trade them back in at gamestation.
Out of your selection - Darkside Chronicles, cannot fail with that one.

I agree.
If you really want to try a COD game on the 360 go for COD 2 IMHO it much better single player than any of the CODS that came after it.

DS.E is good for story & visuals, action, however for me it isn't a game I would replay a lot.
RE.DC is great visual wise, action, replay value & more, also its got a good take on the original stories.
So out of both I would definitely recommend RE.DC.
Couldnt really think of other recommendations.

Overwhelming response seems to be for Darkside Chronicles.
So I think I'll be seeing if my local GAMEs (there are 3) have this in stock:
http://www.game.co.uk/Games/Wii/Resident-Evil-The-Darkside-Chronicles-with-Zapper/~r344316/
If they do, I'll pick it up tomorrow.
If not, I'll wait until it's in stock again.
I'll probably pick up DSE and MW1 in February if they're still going for the same price.
Think I'll be picking up Dark side too. it seems highly recommended around these parts.

Very nice choice. As a big fan of on-rail shooters I really recommend this game aswell as the Zapper; it beats using the Wii Remote. :hop:
It's an absolutely brilliant game, it's the Resi on-rail shooter I've always wanted. I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it. :D

I bought it expecting a great game, played it for 20 min (co-op) and got bored, I found RE TDSC far more entertaining. I'll go back to it eventually but I didn't find it so compelling as RE.

I picked up one of these babies with house of the dead. It's not as good as it looks though. you can't really use it like a arcade lightgun because the limits of the wii sensor.
But man does it look and feel badass.

20 minutes is more than enough to decide whether you want to carry on playing the game or shut it off. I usually give mine 10-15, if I hate it at the start, there's good chance I'll hate it 1 hour in. Games shouldn't have to be played for ages to get to good parts.
It probably is a pretty decent game, I'd like to give it a try myself, but seeing as the last shooters Ten has worn out (:D) have been The House of the Dead: Overkill and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Dead Space would have to be pretty amazing to top the two; which by looking at sales and gameplay footage (what I'd really need is first hand experience with the game, but what can you do) wasn't.
:bouncy:
And is that the Venom Light Blaster gun? How is it? Was going to try getting a cheaper one (well, cheaper thn the Wii Zapper) for when I get another Wiimote (co-op ftw!). Can't play on-rail shooters without a gun controller :D
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-House-Dead-Overkill-Cannon/dp/B001O2S1QS
It's the official House of the Dead brand Hand cannon. made by nyko, it's really sturdy and has a good wight to it. closet to the original Sega arcade light gun on the wii. it has a wire tidy for the nun chuck but for Resident Evil you do need to hold the nun chuck since it's not incorporated into the design of the gun (i.e the primary reason it was made was for House of the dead)

I picked up DSC with Zapper yesterday, and played a bit of it last night.
It's a good game. Hard to get used to, but good.
I'm a bit upset at how they messed with the RE2 storyline...but I'm also pleased, because it seems to make more sense than the original version did.
All round, it's a good game.
I'll still be picking up Dead Space Extraction at some point, probably next month, so I'll let you know my opinions in the future ^_^
Thankyou all for your help in making this decision.

I have two of those beauties! Dual wield in HOTD is so much fun with them. Really nice feel to them, although the cable tidy for the nunchuck gets a bit uncomfortable after a while.
