Well today has been a sad day in my life, as weve just had to put down our family dog which weve had for 14 years (Im 25 so thats over half my life). Ive been upset on and off for the past few days. luckily Ive got my family and friends to help me through, Ive got a kitten who is nearly 4 months old to help me as well.

Losing the dog has made me more appreciative of my memories of her. It also has made me curious to see if anyone in the forum has pets and there opinions of animals? Is it worth the pain of losing them? I think it is the memories alone are worth it. Im devastated thatweve lost the dog. Now I have a cat and I know at some unknown point in time I will lose him as well, but the happiness I have had and will have in the future makes it worth every second.

so opinions and comments please

Exact same happened to me a month ago, 14 year old dog as well. Really got a double feeling myself. At one side it felt stupid to cry over a dead animal, but on the other side it was basically my best friend for most of my life.

I have a cat called Oscar. Weve had him for about 16 or so years now, and hes on his last life now...he was hit by a car at a young age, but managed to regain use of his legs and mild use of his tail.

He was bought to replace harry, another cat that died of a stroke.

We also had Bertie, who grew up with Harry. Bertie cared for Oscar, and when he died Oscar got all depressed and didnt eat that much.

My sister had 3 cats until recently where 1 of them got hit by a car and died. His name was Spork. The mother and Sister of Spork also got depressed.

It hit my sister quite badly because she really loves her pets.

Its going to hit me badly when Oscar goes, as I grew up with him and I have always seen him as my brother of sorts.

Oh, and my Fiance has 2 rats and 2 Russian hamsters.

The rats are called Syler and Lazy, the Hamsters are Squee and Mr Jingles Mark 2. Mr Jingles Mark 2 is named so because of the Mouse that pre-ceeded the hamsters, Mr Jingles. He died a few days before we got the Hamsters.

I am an animal loving person, and near enough everyone I know loves animals. It is a shame to see them go, but they create some very good memories.

Losing a pet is a nasty thing :( Still, Id rather go through the pain of the loss than being deprived of the pleasure of sharing a few years with a furry thingy. Ive had pets for most of my life, species varying depending on how much time I had to devote them.

Ive got 2 mischievous ferrets, Sylvester and Bailey. Theyre the coolest ferrets in the world ;)

Couldnt agree more with you there, Tenebra. Weve had pets most of my life as well, and even though weve lost quite a few (though never one as old as our dog), I wouldnt even hesitate getting a pet of my own once I move out on my own.

I couldnt imagine a life without pets. Ive seen a dog, cat, four hamsters, two rats, over 50 fish (goldfish and tropical) and a couple of carausius morosus (cant remember the english name, so Im giving you the latin one) die, and though I never really had the same connection as I have with my current cat and dog, I wouldnt want to miss the memories I have of them. Then again, I cant even imagine the pain I would feel when I lose my current dog, Chanel, whose already old and probably wont last that long anymore :x Fortunately my cat, Caesar, is only about 5, though Im kinda worried he might die from obesity someday soon >>;

Eitherway, it feels horrible to lose a pet thats been with you for so long, but the time youve spent with said pet makes up for everything times a thousand :3

Im sorry about your loss.

Is it worth the pain of losing them?

Interesting question. I cant provide a longer answer now, but I would tend to say yes, it is worth it. At any rate, a pet can teach a lot of people a few meaningful things. Theres a significant responsibility to having a pet, though. It, to me, in part stems from the trust they put in one. Unfortunately there are, in my opinion, many who dont deserve that trust.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this thread. Its nice to know Im not the only pet lover on the forum and a lot of people share my opinions on them.

As I said in my first post I have been upset on and off for the past few days - today the down moments have occured more and more which is expected considering she was put to sleep earlier today. ive spent most of today looking at photos of her and I have been remembering all the wonderful memories of her.

RIP Lady (1991-2008)

You may have passed on but you will always live on in my heart. my soul and my memories.

Goodbye my friend youll be missed always x

I have had 2 cats in my life. Both died when I was still rather young, so I never had that proper bond/understanding when they died. I can definately see pets as worthwhile. You wouldnt, not make friends with people because they might die some day too.

I used to have a rabbit and a guinea pig. My rabbit bit my guinea pig and it somehow died. As for my bunny, he got ripped apart by a fox or a dog.
Id love a dog, personally, but my dad hates them. Also, Im only home on the weekends now, so it would be cruel anyway.

Dont worry. I laughed quite maliciously when I saw my guinea pig dead....I couldnt help myself.

hi there ...

i like animals ... i used to have a cat when i was young . i felt sad when my dad gave it a way when we moved to another house

Nocturnal Stillness :
i might be a little rude but ... dont be too sad , death is part of life , dont let that or anything else knock you off , i am not saying that you should not be sad ... but dont let that get the best of you ... at many points at our lives ... we will lose someone we love .... we should be strong ..
sorry , i should cheer you up , i hope i did not do the opposite

one more thing ... i think that we should invest more in human more than animals when it comes to relationships ... despite the fact that some time the animals are more loyal than humans , our prophet -peace be upon him- said a time will come , where to raise a dog is better than to raise a son and sadly we started to see that ... but never the less .... i think we should invest more in humans ...

ahhh before i forget , now we have 2 cats and 2 parrots in the house , the cats are caramella , and ice and the parrots are lolo and mia ( i did not name them , my mom did ) and i think lolo the parrot hates me or something , it keeps picking me every now and then , and it hearts ... few days ago it was standing on the chair behind me and all the sudden she jumped and bit me in the nick ... does any one know any thing about parrots behavior ??

Dont worry Russell, fixing them shouldnt be too much of a problem, just take them to the vet as soon as possible though :)

OMG- i found out that it will cost 40 pounds to take both of my rats to the vet :dead: they dont appear to be showing symptoms of ringworm yet. but i probably caught it off of them! my dad got ringworm where he held the rat! theyre so cute though- they just sit around looking up at you! :p

Theyre so cute, but a 14 year old geeks wallet wont pay for much :O I got told that i could give them human ringworm medicine O_O weird huh...

Russell, Id recommend that you take them to the vet and follow their advice. Much safer, you could hurt your little friends with the wrong medication/dosage.

Im going to steal your dog, Joao :p

Ferrets are perfect pets - well, they were created to live with humans after all. Ill get some pics sorted out, the ones I have are a few months old.

Juts a few minutes ago my Dad took my pet cat Oscar to the vets for the final time.

He has been put to sleep due to him basically having enough. He couldnt eat anymore, had a tumour in his mouth, he could barely move.

He was like my brother, as I grew up with him. I feel so odd for saying that about a cat, but still.

Sorry to hear that mate. I had to take my cat Merlin to the vets yesterday nothing serious we were just having him neutered. but still I was worried something was gonna go wrong. It hasnt but the worrying was terrible. I know how you feel as our dog Lady who was put down was family to me, its never easy to let them go but they are going to a better place and will be waiting for us.

My condolences again.

Is it worth the pain of losing them?

Well, though i have only had a pet once in my entire life (a monkey, id like to have more but my mom wont allow it), I do have to say that the pain of losing them cannot compare to the happiness you have shared with them. I mean, sure, it adds on to the pain, but at least you have shown each other the more wonderful parts of life, right? ;p

Ive had several cats throughout my lifetime, the oldest was a grey cat called Smokey who lived until she was around 25 which was older than my sister at the time.

My current cat is by far the nicest little guy ive ever had, his names Jack and hes very affectionate, and will let me cradle him like a baby and stroke his stomach, which is very cute.
