View Full Version : The best movie ever made?
Definetely Avatar(but only in a 3-D cinema!).
I saw it today and i dont know about any other movie that had such an impact on me, im talking about this movie all over the internet today(like here).
Why is it the best? I saw a better story(even when avatar´s story was awesome), i heard better music in movies so why? Its the graphics + 3-D.
You´ll get so sucked in by the enviroment that you will forget you´re watching a movie, everytime the main hero enters avatar its like you enter the avatar as well. I was so amazed by Pandora´s flora that when i took off my 3-D glasses at the end of the movie and looked around, i said: Real world sucks, i want to go back to Pandora.
If games this real will someday be invented, humankind will probably end. If you want to go see this movie, 3-D is the only way.

meh, this film looks alright but Im not really being dragged into the hype machine about it. I looks like its gonna have some pretty generic story. Dude gets sent behind enemy lines to do some reckage but then ends up working with them and beats the bad guys trying to invade.
Im going to see it next week so maybe ill change my mind

My thoughts exactly.
There's always one that claims to be "MOVIE OF THE YEAR", or "BEST MOVIE EVER MADE", then ten months down the line another knocks it out of that spot and does the same for about the same period of time.
So what about movies like Star Wars? Die Hard? The Godfather? are we all going to automatically forget how great those where when something good comes in a flood of hype?
One can't consider a movie to be the best when there is no one that has seen every movie that ever been produced, it's all down to taste and what has and hasn't already been seen.
I consider some horror movies to be some of the greatest ever made, along with 70's-90's movies, others may consider these some of the worst to date.
So, to answer the question, too many to list...

Best movie ever IMHO is The Outlaw Josey Wales, but I'm going to see Avatar in 3D and see if I change my mind!
The best movie ever made is Kung-Fu Hustle, available on DVD and UMD in the bargain bins. 8D

I saw Avatar yesterday. And it truly is epic. Yes the story is a bit generic, but that isn't where the brilliance of the film is. In my opinion it's in the building of the character's. Very few film's I have ever seen build the character's to such a level that I have ever cared about the outcome. Everything in the film has a history and the story telling makes you feel part of that history.
Also the 3D is excellent, and the film had none of those typical "quick chuck something at the screen" scenes.
I would say the hype for this film is deserved, and it should be considered in any debates about the greatest films ever.
Top films for me, Terminator 1 & 2, the original star wars films, Scarface lol and now my mind has gone blank, always the way.

Citizen Kane, 12 Angry Men, Man on the Moon, The People Vs. Larry Flynt, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, A Beautiful Mind, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Grave of the Fireflies...
My list goes on, and I'd say all of these trump Avatar, especially if the only standout thing is "graphics."

I agree, I did some Film Studies at college and we looked into advertising and hype as part of that. I remember something about how most people name their favourite film as the last film they'd seen, simply because, psychologically, it was the one that they can remember the most detail about. I was going to see Avatar until I saw the trailer, it just looked so generic! Definately going to miss this one, and don't even get me started on my 'I Hate 3-D' Rant!
My all time favourite film has got to be Jurassic Park. I can pick apart every line and scene of that to the tiniest detail (ask Woodlandbunny :D, it took us 3 Hours to get through a 2 Hour film because I had to keep pausing the DVD to point out Stage Lights and Cameramen!)
I'm currently obsessing over the SAW franchise, much like I did with the first 3 Seasons of Lost. What I love about SAW is that each film has a pretty stand-alone plot throughout the series, then it gets to the last 15 minutes and all the plot pieces come together, linking in to the overall storyline spectacularly! There are a lot of flashbacks (2 entire films are flashbacks!), showing things from different characters' perspectives revealing plot details that make you FacePalm and thing "DUH why didn't I realise that!?". Then you go back to the previous films and it's all so obvious what was going on all along! Admittedly the second Trilogy/Story Arc has been sloppy, leaving far too many 'What Ifs' for my liking, but with at least SAW VII being released next year, hopefully certain plot elements for SAW V + VI will be fully explained =D

I did Media Production for my National Diploma, so I also spent a lot of time analising films. I pick apart films when I watch them, even if I love them.
When it comes to the Saw franchise, I love Saw 1 and Saw 4, whilst Saw 3 I thought was terrible.
Saw 2 was originally written as a seperate shock-horror film, but was then written into the Saw series, so it always felt very seperate to me. It's good, but not as good as 1 or 4.
I have yet to see 5 or 6, and only recently found out that number 6 had even been made.

I went to see VI on it's first showing, it's easily the best since II. The last 10 minutes of VI had me on the edge of my seat!
I thought III was great! It showed the emotional descent of Amanda from start to finish, as she 'Gave every Cell in her body' to John, and his legacy, but then ultimately realising "Nobody ever changes, it's all a lie!". Dedicating her life to becoming Jigsaw, but she will never be known as more than a John Kramer imitator (who will only be remembered as a murderer). Desperate to be Jigsaw, but not (after losing faith), at the same time, she can't go back to the 'Old Amanda'. She's having an identity crisis as she watches her mentor, whom she believes saved her life, wither and die. And, feeling guilt toward the people she is setting up to be killed by ironic deathtraps. Then the whole thing turns on it's head! Cinematic Amazing-ness!

Im not that into saw. I dont really like horror movies as a whole anyways. I gotta say my film of this year so far has to be District 9, that was a completely different take on the aliens come to Earth theme and a great movie

Oh yes, District 9 was amazing. Gotta love it, and can't wait to get my hands on the DVD.
Also wouldn't mind seeing the sequel, if Blomkamp ever gets to make it.
Another good film from this year was Zombieland, which was great.
I remembered another film I was going to include on my list up above, American History X. That film is amazing.

does it really need a sequel? it might ruin it....I like how it kinda came out of nowhere and was better than all the high budget movie *cough transformers cough* A sequel could mean it has tons of money pumped into it and then we get a generic film full of explosions

As far as I recall, it was Blomkamp that came up with doing a sequel. As long as he keeps creative control over it, I think it'll be good.

Yeah, the original short was really good. Especially considering it was an independant piece, etc.
I'd like to see more Sci-Fi films like District 9, heavy on the storyline, but able to keep action fans interested.
I'd also love to know what the extra's are going to be on the DVD...
The Warriors.
Timeless classic....
Also, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Terminator 2 for me xD
I'm gonna have to go for Jumanji, Mrs Doubtfire and Rose Red for my favourite films. Ah, the memories :o
I'm really looking forward to seeing Avatar, but it's gonna have to be after Christmas now, methinks.
I'm gonna have to go for Jumanji,
YEAH!
Now I'll have to try digging up that movie on VHS somewhere and finding a way to watch it again. :D
Also i would like to add to my list of best movies forest gump, the dark knight, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, gran torino and pulp fiction :)
Woodlandbunny

Completely agree with Pulp Fiction. That movie is absolutely brilliant. Complete genius, I love it. Quentin Tarantino is amazing. <3
I really like Natural Born Killers too, I think it's sweet. ^^

District 9 had a really slow start, and was looking to be a really poo film, but then the whole story kind of opened up, and everything became insanely awesome, and had lots of cool and crazy things happening. :D
The Mech was awesome! :D
Gamer was another good film......not as good as District 9, but it was good. Pretty funny at a few parts, too.
Another good film from this year was Zombieland, which was great.

Zombieland was absolutely awesome. Definitely one of the best films of the year!
I didn't have hugely high hopes for it, as it just looked like a silly film, filled with fun from the trailers. However, I was hugely wrong, and it was one of the best comedy zombie flicks that I've ever seen. Great stuff! :D
American History X was a bit meh. Too much bad language and over the top badness to really enjoy it. I don't think much of Edward Norton anyway.
The Warriors.
Timeless classic.....
One of my favourite older films as well. It's pretty awesome, and not that cheesy. They have a pretty camp style of clothes, but the film just rocks. :D
Terminator 2 for me xD
I'll be back!
I'm gonna have to go for Jumanji
Definitely! :D
Bunny - I haven't seen Natural Born Killers, but heard it's meant to be alright. Still not swayed to buy it, but I have just bought Groundhog Day for £2.99 from play.com, as I haven't ever seen it, and it looks pretty hilarious. :D
I love play.com!
I was bored the other day, browsing christmas deals, and i saw a weird looking one.. Doghouse - Danny Dyer.. kinda a zombie film, where all the women change but it doesn't affect the guys.. mann..
It's now my favourite film atm! You should all check it out! lol :)
Queen of the Damned or The Crow FTW though!

nobody has put an anime movie forward, Im gonna have to say Akira is up on the list as is pretty much anything by Miazaki, guy is a genius!

Akira was alright. Afro Samurai is pretty awesome though. I quite like Sky Blue, too.
Studio Ghibli is praised, but I like most animé which Gonzo entertainment has stuff to do with. It's pretty cool. :D
Gantz is the best animé show that I've ever seen, mind. That's closely followed by Ergo Proxy. <3
I don't watch much Animé, but they are really good. :D

I don't really watch anime movies, although I have seen the two Death Note films, if they count. I didn't really think they were that good though. Not compared to the anime.
Talking about anime and stuff, i really enjoyed superman:doomsday animated movie

aaaargh! Italy is the last country in the world to show AVATAR :D
it's really terrible, so i have to wait until 15th January to watch it in 3D!
and Zombieland doesn't even have an official Italian release date, so i'll wait i don't know how much time before seeing it dubbed in italian :(
however, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f00ADZnXaUo this is the kind of film that is incredibly popular in Italy since late 80s and every-single-year the do anew film almost identical to the previous one with always the same and abused jokes...i hate those film! they never made me laugh!
anyway, anyone of you watched Memento? i think it is a really great film..maybe not the best film ever made, but it's definitely one of my favourite films

I adore Memento. One of my favourite films.
I have the 3 disc special edition DVD. Excellent film.
One movie which always comes back to me when thinking of "favorite movies" is A Nightmare Before Christmas.
I must have watched that movie at least 40 times in my life time and it still catches me off guard each time with it's perfect pacing and catchy tunes.
There is a fantastic CD with cover version of all the songs from the film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5_ks-dhCtU
This is one of my favorites.
A film which just popped into my head when thinking about this topic is a french film called "13 Tzameti" for any film buffs here you should hunt down this little gem.
Anime films... The only two I've seen are Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Both of which blew me away, but aren't exactly my favourite films.
Also is Dead Snow(?) any good?
