View Full Version : PS3 Slim Could Have Been Smaller, Used Network Storage
The PS3 Slim (http://kotaku.com/tag/ps3slim/) was a decent attempt at reducing both the size, and the cost, of the original PlayStation 3. But did you know Sony were considering making some more drastic changes?........................

Network storage. That would have cost a packet for sony.
They would have to have big storage capability, the network traffic would be quite big on their servers, I think that it wouldn't have been a great option just to make a console a few inches smaller...
Sony have lost alot of money on the PS3 already, so this would of been a really bad decision on their part if they went ahead with it.
I think i read somewhere that their still losing in excess of $40.00 for each PS3 sold.

lost even more with mine as i got one for free :D
It's not possible. That would mean:
High cost for Sony to mantain servers(this is the cost they are talking about in the new)
High transfer-rate
Impossible to play without being online
looong loading time... first because you can't install games...
DOWNLOAD contents wouldn't be DOWNLOADED... each time you need to load contents, you have to download them. Simply impossible.

Not impossible but very impractical
OK, and when you have to download file larger, o close to, system memory?
It's not about loading time, it's about not freezing the game because it has to wait for a piece of map... And items in RAM, usually, are much larger than they are in mass memory. Except for Hideo games, it seems elements need to be compressed in order to be used.

exactly very impractical. They may have also added a limited size flash memory to help compensate.
Flash memory have higher costs... so you can't use it to reduce it... :D
And you don't gain enough space, SSD drive usually have form factor like 2,5" HDD...
Unless you don't let users to change it and include it in the main board, like Wii* and loose one of the few right choice... and, last but not the least, very limited storage.
Sony made it right.
* The difference is that Wii doesn't need much storage.
yeah i remember seeing this on some website. every single day when i get home i look up "sony" on google news, sometime twice..... no joke. :D
and even though they are selling it for a loss now, they are still gaining profit off of software and peripherals. - kaz hirai
