First Capcom Community Advent Calendar!

Hey everyone!

I'd normally put something like this into the artwork section, but figured as this should be a blast (if everyone tries to get involved), I'd put it right here. ;)

Well, I'd been thinking about what I could do for the community over christmas, and so I came up with the idea of a community advent calendar!

The idea is simple:

Everyone can submit a picture for a certain day. Now, seeing as we're going into the 7th day, you can choose any day between 1 to 7, and submit a picture for it.

These pictures can be anything from community event photo's, hand drawn pictures that have been scanned in, drawings you may have done in paint, or even pictures drawn in photoshop.

Hopefully this won't have left anyone out now. :)

For each picture, I will get either one or two people to judge alongside me, which picture looks the best, or appears to be the funniest, and then that picture will be chosen to go into the calendar box, with the corresponding number (which I'll update daily).

Prizes:

The person with their image chosen for number 25, will get an extra special something, courtesy of our much loved Tenebra!

Also, if you get 4 or more images put into the calendar, then you'll also get a little something from me. I'll make it worthwhile, as I can afford postage and something for you, as long as you reside in England. :)

Eventually we should start to see the calendar image disappearing (ouch to my 2 hours of making it), and instead, it will start to fill up with all manner of images.

Now, the only rules I have are:

1. Try to keep this Capcom and Christmas themed only.
2. Please don't get upset if you're not chosen one day. Keep trying! ;)
3. Banter of idea's is fine, but please try not to go off topic.
4. You may submit as many times as you like.
5. Please only submit things that you have made. Copy and pasting is unfair on people who put a lot of effort into these things, so won't be judged. :(
6. Please avoid submitting anything rude or offensive. This is a community based forum to which all ages of people come on to view.
7. Just have fun!

Someone should employ me, haha. Still dunno whether I'd be good enough to try and get into marketing and advertising, but maybe I need to do a uni course with it. Not sure.

There will definitely be prizes though.

Lmao, nice Dante! Only problem with that would be if it was picked, it would need to be shrunk down to fit into the squared boxes, except it's rectangular, so I think best bet would be to get the person who made it to choose what part of the image they'd like featured. ;)

Why not just shrink it to fit, and have a showcase of all the images at full size next to it as links? :) That'd suit my work just fine.

I think it would send the image out of proportion, so, I'll put a part of the image in the box, and the member's names under the virtual calendar, stating what number their entry is, and then putting a link of the full sized image beside it. ;)

Also, imageshack is pretty awesome, so if your photobucket is suffering, just imageshack it. :p

Also, I find it funny that we're making Chris become an alcoholic. XD

dec 5th should be the group photo no??, its probably 16:9 but it could be cropped or have black bars across the top to make it fit?

my camera does 4:3 so my pics will fit fine if ones picked :)

This is my second attempt, my first was so awful that it will never see the light of again! (Damn you, Chibi Jill Valentine for ruining everything!)

This is a little Blurry, but I was trying to balance 2 SixAxis controllers (whilst holding L2 and a Thumb stick on one of them) AND taking a photo. Also, Chun Li was a bit excitable and kept moving around. If you think I need a better one I'll have another go!

So, at the minute, someone forgot to eat their chocolates on day 5, as they were too busy at the xmas party, so now we'll be submitting for day number 8 tomorrow!

It'll be good if we can get at the very least 3 people making/submitting something every day, so there will be a bit of work going for the prize. :)

Anyway, I was speaking to the people I chose to judge tonight's, and they thought it was unfair to have material which already exists (copy and pasting), as others are putting some hard work into this, and so for that reason, I've added a rule, which is rule number 5. :)

Simple enough, just make sure the image or whatever you do that is submitted, is pretty much your own work....so cubee's are fine as although you didn't draw them, you photographed it in a fitting christmassy atmosphere, so yea. :D

Now, get onto day 9! You could be winning a fabulous prize from Ten. ;)

After work on friday I've gotta do my weekly food shopping, get home, do the weekly podcast, then prepare myself for a 48 hour game jam, but inbetween the podcast and preparing I shall draw a capcom related christmas picture :)

I have a Medion.....cheapy version of a graphics tablet. It's not bad though, as it works fine, but Wacom is probably amazing performance wise.

Ok, I have no digital skills but i have mad cookery skillz, so I made a story out of fruit and veg about the Zombie Wonderland...

Twas the night before xmas and santa was speeding in his sleigh across the winter wonderland toward the Capcom forums to deliver all manner of goodies to the dedicated gamers who there reside....

As he raced across the landscape he was overwhelmed with a sense of dread and foreboding. As he attempted to negotiate some particularly troublesome chimney pots on Dante's roof he was bitten by a mindless animated corpse, cursed to wander the wintery forums for all eternity.

Santa carried on his nightly rounds, struggling against a fever. Just before he could manage to drop off a particularly twee Christmas jumper to JDK's dwelling he keeled over on the sleigh, crashing into a snow drift.

Santa then rose again, no longer rosey cheeked and full of mirth, but as one of the undead, accompanied by his trusted Rudolf to feast upon the brains of the living.

Behold Capcom's last stand against the festive apocalypse...

If you like to make your own festive edible santa scene you will need:

For Santa - the body is made out of a red pepper, his head is a peeled lychee (zombie santa's head is an unpeeled lychee), his hat and arms are made from red chili peppers. Zombie santa's protruding ribs are made from cotton bud stalks and the blood/gore is tomato puree. Trim is all paper glued on. Don't eat the glue.

Sleigh - an empty lychee punnet filled with oxo cube presents (you can use any flavour but i think the beef or vegetable variety look most festive).

Reindeer - kiwi fruit on bamboo kebab skewers with pretzel antlers - zombie rudolf's brains are made from a raspberry in jelly. Eyes made from 'holes' from my hole punch.

Crimson Viper and Ryu appear as themselves, the present Ryu is about to hadouken at santa is made from a bit of eraser wrapped in tin foil.

Tune in on boxing day and I'll teach you how to make the nativity scene out of left over sprouts and turkey.

When it comes to the time of the 25th, I may have to sort prizes and whatever out after Christmas (due to nobody working on Christmas Day, and everyone spending time with family, for those of us who celebrate it), but I'm hoping there will be lots and lots of entries. :D

Gonna speak to Ten about it. I think I have an idea of what to do for it though, so it shall be quite cool. Numbers is a good start. It's all to do with numbers for me.

Hey everyone!

Just thought I'd let you know that I haven't forgotten about you, and your wonderful efforts.

I wanted to make a formal apology to you all, for not updating daily as I had originally planned. This is due to a few things happening in my personal life, and also not having much of a sleep pattern eventually took its toll.

However, I am now pretty much on top of this, and most things are sorted to about as good as they can be, so I'll be updating later today. ;)

I'm very very sorry, and look forward to your entries up until Christmas (and yes, I'll be updating on Christmas Day, so hopefully you'll all be excited about that).

Also, for those of you who can't draw; It doesn't matter. Your efforts count for something, and although I said no copy and pasting....if you make a collage from copy and pasting, and actually do some creative things with it, then you entry definitely will not be ignored.

I hope you're all well anyway, and Christmas isn't far off, so best wishes to all of you. :)

So the Trials HD DLC was supposed to come out on the 23rd of this month but it's been pushed back to the 30th.....so I want my entry to go on the 23rd as a kinda 'you still get something Trials related on that day' type thing.

yeah I got the DLC, tis all good! There's some really cool tracks in it. One being 1 bit trip and the other being epic jumps. both are medium difficulty and are stupid amounts of annoying fun!

Hehe, well I'm just about to swap from this laptop to my main desktop pc and update for the 24th, but I'm gonna leave the 25th one up and open all day for more entries. ;)

Jack - No worries man, honestly. I believe you tried, so don't worry about it. :)

I'll see you in the new year, and I would happily teach you how to use certain functions of photoshop. I've been doing it myself since I was 17, so I know the program so well, I could explain things without even being on the computer. :p

I'm not on it atm, but depending on how you have photoshop set up, and which one you have (I use CS3), the menu on the left should have near the top something called the lassoo tool. If you right click on that, and select polygonal lassoo tool, then that one will allow you to cut out properly.

I'd advise zooming in first, but that icon is easy to figure out....it's a magnifying glass towards the bottom of that sub menu. :p

Everytime you do something, if you're just starting out, I'd advise you to press together: ctrl, shift and n which will bring up a new layer. Name it if you like, but I don't bother.

Ctrl and T, or ctrl, shift and t (can't remember which one....but one does nothing, so you'll soon find out) allows you to resize the current image with free transform. If you don't want to lose dimensions when shrinking or enlarging, and want to keep all of the pixels in perfect quality, hold shift as you're resizing, and only let go when you're happy with the size.

The black arrow in the menu is your standard mouse function, allowing you to move your project around freely in the work space/canvas you've made.

I think ctrl and backspace fills the background or a selected zone with the foreground colour, whilst alt and backspace fills it with the background colour. Don't hold me to it, although I'm pretty adament they work.

So yea, I have quite a bit of knowledge with photoshop, seeing as I'm downstairs, and my computer screen is off upstairs, without photoshop even being loaded up.

Anyway, if you get some free time tomorrow, hit something up, as what I've explained are pretty much the essentials for getting started.

To the bottom right, you'll see all of your layers in a box anyway, and you can drag them to the recycle bin icon, or shift the layers about in any order you like, and even merge layers.

The save option is as usual in the file menu right at the very top of the screen on the left. When saving projects, save as a psd, and it will save all of your layers etc, and when saving a finished picture, save as a jpeg, or if you want a transparent picture (no background), save as a png.

Flop wise, I dunno. I feel it's good as it has the heart of the community in it, but it lacked a lot of spirit, and as such, was pushed really hard to get an entry out every day, and I'm very surprised that only two people bothered to do an entry for the 25th.

It's not for me to say, as really it was down to the community. I was only the person who came up with the idea. It was the community who had the role of continuing it. Ah well, just a little disappointed, but it was nice to see the entries coming in, from those of you who did enter. :)

I've still got to update the calendar with the winners, and wanted to do that yesterday, but after having hardly any sleep, I woke up in a worry, as an ambulance was called for my mum.

She took some amoxycillin for her bad chest, and all of a sudden was acting strange and felt really weird.

She said she was at the toilet at work, and tried to wash her hands, but couldn't move them much. Then, she couldn't even dry them. She then went into a room on the basement floor to lay down on a table briefly, and when mum got up, there was sweat everywhere, almost as if someone had chucked a bottle of water over the table.

Mum then went upstairs, told her boss she had to go home, as she didn't feel well, and her boss took one look at her, and said she was going to ring for an ambulance.

Then, my mum's work friend came in and put her in the recovery position, and I think mum almost passed out.

Anyway, I heard a phonecall when I was in bed, and my dad said ok, I'll be right there.....and I heard the person on the housephone, so maybe it was on loud speaker, as my dad was downstairs at the time, so I asked dad what was up, and then he told me.

I rushed out of bed, then we set off, and I jumped out in the middle of the road, and went round the back of the ambulance, and said "heya, is everything alright?" and he said is it your mum in there? So I said yea, and he told me not to worry too much, as everything is under control, and it's nothing bad.

Thankfully they got to her in time so she was fine.

Anyway, I had a ride in the ambulance with my mum, while my dad trailed behind, and we got up to the hospital pretty fast.

I think we were in there for about 3 hours, and they had mum on oxygen for a bit, and then gave her some anti-allergy medicine, and over time mum got a lot better.

Hmm, her face and whole body swelled up a lot, and had red patches and rashes on. Apparently it was due to the amoxycillin.

She thought she was going to die, and said she lost all feeling in her mouth, apart from her tongue which felt too big for her mouth. Sounds pretty weird.

Must have been bad though, as my mum doesn't ever worry about dying at all. She just shrugs off any illnesses which come and go.

We've all taken it our entire lives when needed to, and it was fine. None of us were ever allergic to it, but apparently from out of nowhere, you can actually develop allergies to things which you've had no previous bad history with. That means now, my mum can't take any form of Penicillin ever, in her entire life!

Thankfully apart from that, mum's in great health.

Anyway, the amoxycillin caused it, and sent mum into anaphylactic shock, which has been known to kill people.

Ha, I haven't ever gotten out of bed so fast in my life, but I'm glad everything is alright now. That would have been horrible. I'd like to think that my mum has another 20 - 25 years of life left at least!

I'll update either tomorrow, or in the new year now, and I won't say a proper date, as I've not been that great at sticking to it. :(

Crikey! There's nothing like a mad dash to A&E over the Christmas season is there?? My grandparents have always been great at timing it for xmas eve :P

I'm glad to hear your mum is ok. These things can be terrifying when they happen, must have been pretty scary for you. Yeah, it's weird, you can go through life happy as larry and then all of a sudden your body goes "Hey, imma gonna be lergics to dis nao!". I'm also allergic to penicillin and most recently my body has decided it is about time I was allergic to shiitake mushrooms. Bizarre!

Yea, everything is ok now. Mum had the week off of work, as the boss told her to, just to be on the safe side. Thankfully, there hasn't been any other problems, so it's just Penicillin that mum can't ever take again.

Sucks she has to pay for the emergency medication they gave her, when we're meant to be on the NHS though. To me that sounds more like being private.

Anyway, I think I deserve a trophy for world's longest post, or shall I say essay? Haha.

Drac - Yea, a lot of people seem to aim for the christmas season to add panic to the world, haha. Too much of it, and I'd be getting grey hairs lol.

It's proper flu, I don't do that wussy man version and cry about it. I had a headache for like 4 days then my hearing went, then my legs decided they didnt want to work properly, im now at the stage where my nose is constantly running...just wish all of it would come at once so I can get it over with already

My Kratos Santa, haha. Managed to draw it and colour it with just facial references in 20 minutes, so that was alright.

I'll post it up when I'm on my pc then, haha.

Anyway yea, I don't get ill much, and when I do, it's not just a slight cold, which a lot of men call "flu".....it's the whole shibang of not being able to eat due to throwing up, feeling light headed, slightly worried, sweating profusely, shivering, and aching so much you can't physically move.

I still moved a lot more than I was meant to when I did my leg in (still not 100%, but definitely a lot better!), and didn't cry or even make too much fuss actually. My mum and dad thought I handled and dealt with it well miraculously. They're surprised at how well I coped lol.

I suppose it's my lighthearted sense of humour, sheer willpower and stubborn-ness which got me through it ok.

So, thankfully I can't be classed as a typical man, as I'm not a hypochondriac. :p

Hope it passes soon btw man!

Only thing I'm disappointed with is that I could have possibly put a tiny bit more effort in, to update it daily without fail.

I'm glad there's at least one entry for each day though. It was really easy to make, too!

I had a lot of fun blending together, and making the original image. Plus, the boxes were nice to see, when I actually put them on it properly. :D
