I´m kinda pumped up now by this theme so i want to know your opinion guys, what will happen?

And im not talking about the movie :)

Personaly i believe in the(sorry for my english, too advanced words for me) oposite polarisation of earth´s magnetic poles - wow, did i just write that without any help?! Im sure i have a typo in there somewhere. But back to the topic, its a theory by scientisc and i think that it will probably break every electronic device, probably my ps3 too so i should buy extended waranty.

What do you think that will happen? Salvation or great destruction? Or nothing?

To be honest, I'm not that bothered.

I won't see the film, as I find it silly to watch a film about the end of the world, when supposedly the world will end in three years anyway. It's like watching the world end twice, except on the second watch, you're actually experiencing it. :p

If the world is going to end, it's out of our power. So, I figure why worry about it, and talk about it now? It might not even happen.

There have been predictions all over the years, and they have so far all been wrong. Nostradamus was probably the most famous person to predict the world ending, and from what I recall, he envisioned it coming to an end in 2007 or somewhere around that year. It didn't happen.

Sure, something might happen. The Mayan's have been pretty accurate with things all throughout history, but just because the Mayan calendar ends on like the 21/12/2012, it doesn't mean to say the world will end, or anything else for that matter.

True enough, something might come to an end, but this could be anything. Supposedly, the change is meant to be a good thing with some beliefs.

Christianity believes something will happen on this date, so it could be significant, but until the time comes, there isn't much point in worrying about it.

I say live your life to the full, treat everyone how you'd like to be treated yourself, and let yourself escape from life's worries, as you won't always be given this freedom.

If the world ends, then it does. There's my two cents. ;)

The only thing that could happen by then is some international crisis involving North Korea. Nostradamus predicted something to do with 9/11 pretty accurately and also predicts something to emanate from North Korea's region. We all know that place is run by a tyrant who has a big gob to go with his big army (third largest army in the world). Iran aren't exactly buddy ol pal ol chum ol friends with the world either.

However, do I expect some global catastrophe to result in the world imploding in on itself, resulting in us becoming Teletubbies? Nawww.

Btw, the Mayan calendar didn't end simply because the last date was what they thought was the world's end. They got owned (albeit constantly and over a looooong period of time) by the Spaniards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_conquest_of_Yucat%C3%A1n

Personally, it's all fluff. The only realistic cause for concern is, as I said, something starting between USA and North Korea/Iran. Would that bring us World War 3? Who knows. That's the only realistic scenario going by current world affairs.

and a big gold gun too!

Team America!

I havent heard about any real life theories of bad stuff happening in 2012 but imo the olympics i sgunna be awesome and the movie wasnt that bad, i actually enjoyed it even if it was a horrible movie as a piece of entertainment it did its job.

I've done a bit of research in to it after hearing it on the radio.

The reversal of magnetic poles has happened before (around 800 thousand years ago) and if it wiped all life on earth, none of us will exist today, not only is it extremely unlikely that it will happen, even if it does, damage or loss will be minimal at best.

The earths axis won't flip either, since we are kept steady by the moon and there's nothing that could possibly do it.

Planet Nibiru doesn't exist, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibiru_collision#Origins the moment I read the first line, I closed the page.

Magnetic effects on the sun won't bother us either, its heaviest flare of radiation hit us in 2003, and we're all still here. Allignments with the equator may cause comets to fall due to the gravity effects, however, this has happened before and has not effected us, let alone on a specific date.

If Jupiter and Saturn alligned, then their gravitational field would not be enough to pull us anywhere, it's happened already, in fact, 1962, and we are all still here, there's no prediction it could possibly happen in 2012.

No star is close enough to go supernova on us, there is no "dark energy" headed our way (it's already here, actually, and it's not harmed us), the only black hole is several billion years off.

So, the possibility that the world can end on 2012? About the same as every year, we could be extremely unlucky, but the chances are incredibly slim, keep in mind that, advanced as the Mayans where, they didn't have our technology or the knowledge we have now, the fact that there calander ends on 2012 didn't necessarily mean the world would end that day, it just looks like someone is purposely hunting for a reason for that date to be a bad thing.

But if it does happen, at least my username wont expire. :D

like most disaster movies it's all a load of rubbish! the writers use big words that the people who watch these films dont understand and claim it is science. the series friends managed to parody this kind of thing very well when hank azaria's character, david, claimed he was trying to achieve the sub atomic distilation of particles (which is just gibberish) with his tongue firmly in his cheek. anyway the other reason for hoping the film isn't prophetic is 2012 is olympic year and i'm registered with the volenteer program.

why make yet another end of the world movie where a bunch of american survive? hello, surely thats not the end then is it....dumb hollywood

As for the Mayan calender thing, my 2003 calendar ran out a good few years back and were all still here. The only thing that will end our world is if television gets cut off and we run out of chocolate.

NASA debunks 2012: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?

Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could a phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website (http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/), so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

The only thing that is going to happen on the 21st of December that is of any significance is sunlight hitting the back wall in the newgrange chamber in Ireland. This only occurs every winter solstice. Going abit off topic but 2012 is quite abit of rubbish. Supposably scientists predict 2036(not exactly sure of the date but it's between 2030's and 40's) that a large mass rock will come close to earth either impacting into earth or narrowly missing earth by a few miles. Which gives us hope that we will live for another few years lol.

Yea, good posts Carb and Dante. ;)

The end of the Mayan calendar might not mean anything, but even with the extremely smart abilities of NASA's top scientist's, nobody will know what will happen until the time actually comes.

We're overdue for an ice age, supposedly there is a planet called Nibiru/Niberu that has somewhere down the line been supposedly "proven" to exist, and this was meant to wipe out the world. Plus, some people worry about things like black holes swallowing the planet.

A lot of it is make belief stuff. Sure, it's all possible, but it's just highly unlikely to happen.

This bit's for you Dante: You might think I'm completely crazy, but I do believe in aliens, for the simple reason of it'd be extremely unlikely for there not to be life out there. This is due to how many planets, solar system's and whatever else is out there.

Maybe some people genuinely believe in things like the lady who came up with the whole Nibiru story, as they could have experienced unexplained things, which we won't understand, due to not going through it ourselves.

However, it could also very easily just be a pile of rubbish, too.

Ghost's I believe in too, but only because I've experienced something which couldn't be explained once or twice. Nothing usually scares me, but these happened a while back (years), and they weren't nice.

I guess science can't explain everything.

Trust me, 2012 is when the crab people rise and take over your bodies. That's how life on Earth will end. They'll rise up to smite us petty humans who dare to oppose their crabby features. If you ate a crab or part of a crab in your life, expect to be taken over by a crab person.

It's inevitable.

We might as well call it quits now.

A friend of the family I see every few months used to work as a spiritualist medium (she was respected enough to work on cases with the police) and is a big believer in the 2012 thing. She used to be a pathalogist, so she's be no means your average new age nut-job.

I've talked to her about it on a number of occassions and she's said a lot of that things that get said about it are rubbish. The Mayan calender does end on this date, but this doesn't mean the "end of the world". It, along with other prophecies from native american cultures, predict that it will mark the transition to a more spiritual age after a "mass exodus of souls", i.e. lots of people are going to snuff it.

She tells me the nature of this exodus is unclear, some predict yellowstone will erupt and cause a nuclear winter for 2 years. She feels a mutation in the flu virus is more likely followed by some kind of gradual (gradual enough to decide where you want to move to) changing in the land masses. But either way, life will go on and the world will not end. She showed me a map once of what the world will look like post 2012, very interesting!

I'm not sure I believe it, but she did predict the credit crunch!

I'm not sure I believe it, but she did predict the credit crunch!

Anybody that is even half aware of Global History can predict a credit crunch/recession.

This is not the first recession we have been through, and it will not be the last.

Any country that gets too big for itself (America, in this case) will eventually have a problem with money. In this Global Age, the problem spreads to any other country that relies heavily on the starting country.

This is why there was a major concern about the house prices in America, and then a few months later we're in recession.

Notice that more insular countries like China aren't suffering froma major recession. However, it is guaranteed that they will do at somepoint in the future.

Anyways...did anybody actually read the Q&A I posted up above? No respectable Scientists has said anything the likes of an "End of the world" scenario. Trace back any comments and they are either complete fabrications or taken out of context.

Sorry, I should have added a timescale to that. She predicted it back when I first met her in 1999 ish. She claimed the events around 2012 would start with economic hardship. She believes that things will get significantly worse in britain after the next election - so we'll see if she's right! Although, to be honest, I think I could probably predict that too!

You're right though, anyone with half a brain could have seen the credit crunch happening when banks thought it was a great idea to do 125% mortagages - i mean, house prices only ever go up right? Right??
