Stop Press - Okami 2 unlikely

Capcoms Chris Svensson has cast doubt over the likelihood of an Okami sequel, saying we need more people buying the current version before we consider a sequel.

The PS2 version sold poorly despite strong reviews, and its commercial performance contributed to Clover folding - the Capcom studio that developed the game. Many thought that Okamis release on the Wii might reverse the IPs fortune, but this doesnt seem to have happened.

A sequel wouldn t have been that good anyway, when I first saw the ending I wanted a sequel, because the story was not really at an end, but now I think it s actually better like this. If there s a sequel it should be done with an all new story as it s done with the Zelda series. Since Okami isn t Zelda it would be strange to use almost the same characters and locations. In the end you d have to change so much that you couldn t call it a sequel any more.
A new game with the same style would be really awesome though.

I wonder why so few people bought it. It s a REALLY good game after all...

Id put it down to poor marketing really. If I remember correctly (and I may not) the game came out at the same period on Wii, as Grand Theft Auto did. That mightve killed it in some territories. In addition, Mario Kart Wii and Turok both came out in that month too, and they performed decently in terms of people purchasing them (the quality of these titles is up for debate though =P)

In addition, the PS2 version came out with no real barriers but it was much less marketed back then too.

It is a shame too, the game was brilliantly innovative (in some aspects) and I really enjoyed it too. I must confess I never bought the Wii version, due to a sufficient lack of funds at the time, but I did enjoy it when it was originally released on PS2.

I actually own both versions. And even though I love Okami to death. I dont think this game needs a sequel. Id rather see the same people try different things. Okami is just one of those games I can play from time to time, without getting bored of it really.

The same people are actually the guys working on Bayonetta, MadWorld and Infinite Space. =P

Then waiting for those games is best, because I dont think a sequel would do Okami any good. Its a finished story, theres no reason to continue it. And a Final Fantasy/Legend of Zelda kinda formula probably doesnt work that well with Okami :3 I love the game to death and played it many, many, mannnyyyy times, but a sequel wouldnt work out~
