Normally, I wouldn't post a thread for one PSN release, however, I'll make an exception for this title.
Vagrant Story is a spectacular game I encourage everyone to try, it was unfortunately overshadowed by numerous titles, but this little unknown gem is one of my favourite games of all time, I hope it gets time to shine now. :D
The story, set in the world of Ivalice (later used in FFXII and Tactics), is about a pair of agents in pursuit of a seemingly immortal cult leader, who has fled to his stronghold, the ghost town of Lea Mondé. Complicating this, a group of holy knights appear with twisted intentions in the name of taking out the cult.
It's set in a fantasy world typical of Western style RPGs, so there are Orcs, Dragons, Mimicks and Trolls, those kind of things.
The combat system is very similar to that of VATS of Fallout 3, in that you are able to move in real time but target on a fixed screen with a shape representing the hit radius. Hitting a limb can cause ailments in your opponent, like attacking the legs slows their movement and hitting them in the head silences them (unable to cast spells). There's also a large number of spells, some so rare, you may not get them on the first playthrough, and several special attacks for each weapon class. And, with the correct abilities in place, its possible to juggle combo moves.
There's a wealth of customisation options, with each armour and weapon improving or degrading your chances against various opponents. It's also possible to make weapons and armour by combining two existing items in a workshop, the armour doesn't change the characters appearance but the weapons look different, and given the sheer amount in there, it'll take a while to see them all.
And if that wasn't enough, on completion you can continue the game and gain access to secret areas that wheren't available first time, considering my first playthrough was 20+ hours, it's got a LOT of lifespan.
