Im sure most of you can get the idea behind this thread. Pose yourself a question, a What if? question, and try to answer it.
What if Barry never came to save Jill and Carlos?
What if there was no vaccine for Sherry?
Etc, etc.
My What if? question is this:
What if Leon just got back in his jeep and went to the RPD on his own?
Claire would have broken out into an alleyway that had zombies at either entrance (those that were attempting to attack Leon, and those that were pressed against the window of the diner).
I feel that Claire probably would have died (she only had a knife).
Leon wouldnt have crashed, so he probably would have gone through the back entrance of the RPD. He would have eventually been blocked in by the crashing oil truck.
Kendo would have survived for at least a small time, as he wouldnt go near the window (for a while maybe) and would be well defended.
Leon would probably never meet Sherry or Chief Brian Irons, and the chances are that he would have ended up facing both Mr X and William Birkin on a regular basis.
Going by this, the chances are that Leon would have eventually died...being over run with incredibly powerful enemies.
The death of Leon and Claire would, of course, change the entire series as a whole.
Chris wouldnt go to Rockfort Island and face off against Wesker or Alexia. Nobody would really know if Wesker was actually alive or not, Alexia may still be running around ruling the world in her overly powerful way, etc, etc.
What if William Birkin died prior to his G-Virus injection?
The Viral outbreak would have been greatly reduced to just the monsters in the arklay mountains and minor occurrences.
Umbrella would have numerous G and T Virus samples, allowing them to produce more potent B.O.Ws, its possible that Birkin was still working on perfecting the virus, hence his unpleasant mutations, with various samples, Umbrella would be able to perfect the virus.
S.T.A.R.S Members would be silently assassinated rather than being eliminated during the chaos of the outbreak, Nemesis would never be deployed, Chief Irons could succeed in causing accidents to kill them all off.
Chief Irons true sadistic nature would never had come to light, and the mayors daughter would still be alive, however, this could lead to murders that could not have taken place during the chaos.
Leon would have resumed work at the RPD, never would have met Claire and would have to deal with the occurrences resulting from the Mansion incident, as an ordinary cop, possibly killed during an investigation, maybe even loyal to Irons.
Chris would more than likely still leave town, Claire would travel in search of him, not find him and leave, possibly arousing suspicion from Chief Irons and Wesker, possibly leading to her kidnap in order to find Chris location or as a ransom tool against him.
Annette and Sherry would possibly resume an ordinary life under the protection of the US Government, Annette would probably continue Williams research.

What if Annette got kidnapped by Umbrella on seizing the virus samples? (Claire A Scenario)
Birkin still injects himself in order to get revenge, proceeds to the sewer, murders the squad sent to recover the virus, recognising Annette as his love interest in his former life, injects her with a G-Embryo.
Annettes attempts to remove it fail, she dies before she can get to the labs to create a vaccine and a Mutant-G lurks the corridors of the abandoned facility Birkin was working in.
Neither Ada or Leon are shot or impaired by Annettes actions and are able to proceed much faster but without knowing of what exactly happened, Ada has no difficulty in retrieving the virus from Sherrys pendant, Leon, unaware of what Ada is actually doing, aids her.
With no one to tell Claire of Birkins fate and current intentions, Sherry is injected with a G-Embryo but has no account of what happened, neither Claire or Sherry know of the embryo.
Birkin appears where he would have slew Annette but fights with Claire, although Claire survives the fight, she is gravely impaired when having to deal with sick Sherry and looks for means to escape.
Leon, convinced that Sherry is infected with the same virus that turns a person in to a zombie, has a moral debate with Claire if they should take Sherry with them or if they should leave her to turn as they know of no cure.
Leon is forced to fight Mutant-G as Claire fights with Birkin, both are seriously wounded, Mr.X appears and Kills Ada, Leon, unable to help, flees to find Claire, only to confront mutated Sherry, traumatised by the sight of the mutant child, is killed.
Claire mangages to escape to the train but has a longer time having to start up the escape train as Leon isnt there to do it, Having to fight Mutated Mr.X takes the little time she has left and the facility explodes.
Ada, knowing of Leons death and not knowing of Claire escapes with the G-Virus sample.
Chris comes to the conclusion that Claire died in Racoon city as it was her last known whereabouts, utterly destroyed by this, his concentrated attempts to destroy Umbrella become reckless and futile, eventually leading to his likely death, not knowing that Wesker is alive.
Leon never becomes bodyguard to the president, Jack Krauser never meets him.
Ada is sent to investigate the Las Plagas and proceeds to find the Las Plagas sample, unconcerned with the presidents daughter, follows Saddler, the two fight and she is killed whereas she would be subdued if Leon where alive as a hostage to Leon, Saddler sends the infected presidents daughter back, Ashley infects her father, Saddler rules the world from behind the scenes.
Jack Krauser is suspected of working against Saddler, and is disposed of.
Wesker, still in control of umbrella comes to the conclusion that he has to destroy Saddler in order to gain control over the affected populace, with little support, he is easily overcome by his own infected agents and is forced to mutate in to a tyrant, but is destroyed by Saddlers near limitless army.
