View Full Version : Would you buy a console for just one game?

Ive heard and seen in many fanboy type blogs and forum posts saying that no one in their right mind would want to buy a console for just one game.

And yet, I did, I bought a PS3 so I could play Devil May Cry 4 with a control pad im used to and I bought an Xbox360 just play Dead Rising, and someone I know bought a PS3 just to play Metal Gear Solid 4, not to mention the countless Final Fantasy VII fans who bought a PSP just for Crisis Core.

But what exactly is wrong with that? surely if you are planning to buy a console, its better to start off with a game you know you would probably like and is more than likely exclusive to a console you dont own, and its not like the game is permanently fused in to the console, its possible to buy alot more titles over time and grow fond of your purchase.

So, what I want to know is:

Have you bought a console for just one game? if so, why?

And if you dont want to, why not?

Yes i have.

GameCube - Resident Evil REmake

PSP - Silent Hill Origins

Nintendo DS - Resident Evil: Deadly Silence

Nintendo Wii - Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (though, admittedly, i bought my Wii with Zelda and Red Steel, and had to wait ages for RE:UC)

My collections for each have grown since i bought them (not a huge amount in some cases, but still more than 1 title) and will continue to to grow for years to come. I agree with you...it is better to buy a console knowing that there is atleast 1 game out there that you want, than to just generally buy a console for the hope of there being several more games that you want.

I can see why people wouldnt do this...but i think generally people are under the impression that you will only be buying that game, and only play that game...which is absurd.

Hmm not sure. Depends on the game, I guess. I mean, Id love to have a PS3 for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts, but Im just not gonna buy a 400+ euri console for just one game. Id rather wait till there are about.. 4 or 5 games worth buying, before buying the console.

.. given I would have the money.

I was actually considering this about 2 months ago. I was planning to buy a Wii for Brawl, but ended up considering a PS3 seeing the Wiis poor amount of decent games. But realizing that Id only get a PS3 for MGS4 and after looking into the games that were going to come out for both the PS3 and 360, I ended up buying a 360.

So no, I wouldnt do it. Then again, maybe I would if I had a bigger budget.

Chances are you wont end up with one game per console, as TZM said. I tend to wait until there are about 5 games announced that I want a lot. However, it really depends on the game(s). For me personally, I can imagine there being a system seller, a single, system selling game.

Initially yes. But in the end I look at the other games available that may be of interest to me. It makes me a better, more respectable gamer (no offence). By that I mean, in the end Im trying things I probably wouldnt have simply because I might as well make more use of the console. Im exposing myself to an even more range of games. I get to experience those other games and a better portfolio if you like. Anyone who checks out more games in this way makes them that much better in my opinion. It doesnt make you bad for not checking them out but you obviously limit yourself needlessly with just that one game you wanted. Heck, the others might even be better. In fact, Ill give a somewhat decent example. I got a PS3 to play DMC4 (not the only game, MGS4 etc too) but other titles (MGS4) were a little ways off. So I wanted to see what else was on offer that I may enjoy. Turns out I freakin loved Uncharted, something I thought looked ok from its first unveiling but forgot about until I decided to just buy it. Speaking of Uncharted, I definitely recommend it. Aside from the odd few glitches and plastic looking characters, the game is pretty solid. Some pretty neat voice acting too.

Initially you would buy a console for a single game. But in the end you wouldnt because there are even more games that interest you?

I would have some years ago. There were no games that really amazed me recently.
Actually I originally got my snes only for Donkey Kong Country. In this case, of course there were a lot of games that also were interesting.
If Heart of Darkness was remade for some console I guess I would buy that console too.

In days gone bye when i did not own all current gen consoles and one had a game exclusive to that system I would do some research and see what other exclusive games that console had or had coming to it.

Gamecube for instance Resi Reibirth was the game that intrested me in the machine but after some reasearch I found Resi Zero also exclusive was coming along with Resi 4.
With Eternal Darknes, skies of arcadia and others that I looked intresting that were already on the system that I wanted to try out or liked the sound of so i bought one.

Also i ended up with many other games on the gamecube in the end, but it all started with just one game that I wanted.

But now times are different I like so many different type of games and as a gamer i want all consoles anyway to forfill my gaming needs.

Basically I would buy a console mainly for one game. Ignoring the rest. After a while I just want to make more use of it. See what else is out there. Like my initial aim is to buy a 360 just to play Lost Odyssey (yeah, still no 360 for me) but in the end it wont be the only game I will play. I gave my example of the PS3 (in that case it was more than 1 game. MGS4 and FF.) yet I decided to look at Uncharted.

Im not saying it wont be the better version as I dont know but not seen anything to suggest either version will be better.

I wont buy a whole console for just 1-game to play, if the console hasatleast more than 8 to 15 games worth playing then I might give it a second thought.

Buying a console for just 1-games doesnt appeal to me that much.

I dont, but the fact that you can import it from the US and play it before it hits the streets over here might sway me towards the PS3 version anyway.

You can do that with loads of 360 games as well it depends if Konami put region lock of the game wich is doubtfull as they havent done so yet on any games.

Buy one of the Next gen consoles (Do we still call them that? Surely once theyre released theyre current gen?) for one game? No. One game may be the deciding factor over which one to get. But not just for one game.

Id buy a gamecube for 1 game though. Theyre so damn cheap! A psp isnt so bad either.

Ive bought cds for one song! I got Stone sours album just because of zzyzx road, afer I looked it up cause of TZM. Though Theyre starting to grow on me i guess...

Either way, Im going off topic...

No, but it just so happens that the PS3 is going to get good games for it. I bought my PS3 for DMC4 (mainly), MGS4, Tekken 6, RE5 etc.
