Pay for a demo? NONSENSE!

I'll happily buy the full thing when it comes out, but I'm certainly not paying for something incomplete and possibly riddled with bugs...

Oh, good, thought it was some kind of elaborate marketing ploy.

I'll give it a try soon enough.

It's been standard practice for Microsoft to release demoes a few weeks early to Gold Subscribers.

It's a way of rewarding you for paying them to play online.

I'm new to Xbox Live so, I didn't know that...

I just thought it was rather, ugh, to pay for a demo. :fear:

Yeah. I was always slightly opposed to it. To be honest, since getting a years subscription to Gold...I've only played online once.

Seems like a bit of a waste really. Probably won't renew it.

I've hardly been on it this month, I'm thinking of paying per month like my sister, so if any good titles come out then I can play online, if not, PS3 all the way.

Ye well, Left 4 Dead 2, Cod MW2, Borderlands.... Just to name 3 games which are great online. If u dont play online games much, theres no need to be a gold member actually, but its still cheap. 60€ / Year is like 5.50€ / month, not much.

Anyway, the Demo is fun, can be played online and offline. I had to get the german demo which is censored ( :( ), but it was ok. New Tank, Croucher ( ? ) and another enemy are cool, the shotgun is bad in l4d2, a witch killed me through a fence lol. Definitely gettin the full game in 2 weeks, of course uncut version :D

I played the demo last night and absolutely loved it! Really can't wait until it's released! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeek! :D

But yes, it's great, the new normal and special infected are a nice change (the Charger is scary when you don't hear or see him coming D: ), the new guns and melee weapons are awesome (tactical shotgun + machete combo = win <3). The wandering witch is great too.

To anyone who hasn't played it yet, I'd really recommend it, it's awwwwesome stuff. :)

I'm unsure whether or not I prefer this to L4D1. it's definatly good, but it feels different to me. It might just be the new enemies, melee weapons, lighting, etc. I'm sure I'll grow to love it, but the demo isn't enough for me to judge it on.

chaosriotzero
05-11-09, 22:26
well the demo is only two short parts of one campaign. the daylight features and the fact that alot of the demo was outside makes it feel very different from the first game. I cant wait for the full version

I know what I'll be buying in the next couple of weeks, thats for damn sure.

Also, Spike and Silentkiller, I accepted your friends requests. :D

A quick review I've written up:

First Impressions Of Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox360) (Demo)

Left 4 Dead has become something of a phenomenon.

In its short, year long run it’s hardly produced any downloadable content, has a barely held together story and is surprisingly shallow, but despite all these flaws it has indeed proved itself to be an excellent game, from its intense panic horror gameplay to its on the fly dark comedy, it’s proved itself as more than just a mindless FPS, something the Xbox360 and PC are both VERY familiar with by now.

If you think the sequel is nothing more than 5 new scenarios with a higher number on the end, you’d be very wrong, everything has been improved with this title, from watching the introduction alone, you know you are in for something good.

There are more types of infected this time around, but despite this, the game feels surprisingly balanced, some of the specials appearing more frequently, but are seemingly just support for the rest, its not a case where you’re walking in constant fear you’re going to be mugged by 8 special infected. The classics are here from the first game:
The Hunter, with his ability to pounce on your character from a long distance. The Boomer, which hurls up bile on you, attracting zombies as well as exploding if you attack him. The Smoker, with its ability to ensnare you in its long tongue. The Witch, a stationary monster within good reason, sneak past or you’ll more than likely die by her powerful attack, and of course The Tank, A powerhouse with the ability to throw slabs of concrete and requires the whole team to defeat effectively. The new infected have special abilities that help the rest out. The Jockey causes you or one of your team mates to sometimes run directly in to a horde of infected, the Spitter throws up acid, temporarily blocking up your path and the Charger is a strange combination of a diet-coke Tank and a hunter, in that he is powerful and can pin you down, but can be seen way off. Different combinations warrant different strategies for coping with each or a combination of them.

There are also unique types of zombie in each scenario, in the first two levels of The Parish, you’ll encounter infected armoured security staff, bullet proof from the front and have to be shot in the back, forcing one player to keep it occupied as the other sneaks around and hit’s the weak spot or to melee attack it and shoot it with perfect timing. There are supposedly more of these in later levels, but I’m obviously yet to encounter these.

And of course, with more types of zombies comes more types of guns, from what I have discovered so far (which in itself is a rather liberating sentence) there are multiple machineguns, shotguns, pistols, throwing weapons and melee weapons. Every combination has its flaws and its strengths, and in every play through, its randomised, meaning your favourite combo may not appear until later on, forcing you to improvise with weapons you wouldn’t normally use, or it could be right at your feet at the beginning. Along with these weapons also comes a degree of freedom to do what we all really want to do in a game - Mess around! Playing with a throwable vial of Boomer Bile (causing zombies to run to that area), hitting a zombie square in the face with a frying pan and taking on a Tank with a machete are some of the things you are definitely going to try out.

The AI director also makes a return, despite the two short scenarios in the demo, I have seen some pleasant variety in what the AI director can now do. One time a path was blocked, forcing me to take a dark alley where I’d be choked with infected coming from both ends, another was a machete being available from the beginning, starting out with silenced machine guns as well as finding a magnum part way through where nice variations, improved drastically by the additional enemies and weapons, although I am yet to see the full wealth of what the director is capable of, I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the rest in the full game.

Fans will be pleased to learn that the dark humour makes a return, everything from the witty exchanges between characters, to the high level of detail will make you laugh with what you notice, everything from the Spitter’s (an exceedingly ugly creature) pink thong, to what survivors have written on walls, this unique brand of humour will bring a smile to your face, and will no doubt spawn next years “Grabbin Peelz”-type meme.

So, do I have any worries with this title? A few I guess, my first would be that it will explain too much, part of the brilliance of the original was that we knew the zombie outbreak was a mutated strain of rabies, that’s all we needed to know, but I hope that we don’t find out its caused by some conspiracy or a lab accident, in fact, just like the George.A.Romero movies, I hope we never find out.

Vedict:
Despite the original was brilliant, it was also very shallow, Left 4 Dead 2 appears to have solved that problem, even after a good few sessions, there is still a profound level of depth to what is possible, the vast weapon combinations and the unlikeliest of events combined with a quirky soundtrack give it a unique and endearing charm, definitely something you’ll want to pick up eventually.

I highly doubt there's a mod around that's any more innovative than L4D2.

Just tried it, and I have to say that I'm loving the jazzy music. Also, the jukebox in the cafe is a nice touch. I'm thinking that maybe this is the only bright campaign, although I'd love to see another one.

Roll on Christmas! :)

The levels have changed...and there are quite a few new features. Plenty enough to allow for L4D2 to be called a new game, anyway.

Oh really? If theres a team out there willing to make CGI cutscenes, hire professional voice actors, motion capture actors, professional musicians to replace the original score, modellers creating detailed enemies/characters/weapons/levels, coders and programmers to improve the AI, conceptual designers to improve weapons and think up new enemies/modes/systems, think up stages and variations of existing enemies, think up new game modes and produce it all for a free single download online, I'd sure love the link.

That. The game is balanced differently. And there's a total of 24 new levels. If you can find a mod with 24 new levels and new enemies and weapons and characters then I'd eat my hat.

Like I said before. Have you even played the demo?
And what would qualify as a L4D sequel to you? It fits L4D perfectly and I'm glad it is what it is.
