View Full Version : Age restriction on sections

Controversial idea, but a well thought out one.

I think that sections like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry should only be viewable by persons over the age of 15, and Dead Rising can only be viewed by persons over the age of 18, this is because ive seen posts by people that appear too young to play the games, and it would certainly be bad publicity should someone think that Capcom turns a blind eye to children playing unsuitable games.

I mean, it sort of makes sense, the websites have age restrictions on them, so why not the areas that discuss them?

The only problem with it, is that they are easy to get around. Though i suppose that would not be Capcoms problem...more the problem of the parents or the child visiting the forum.

I cant help but agree with you on this. Certain forums should have age restrictions.

Im glad you agree.

The old forum I went to had a password section, you had to ask the admin for the password, they checked out your profile, posts and maybe elsewhere on the web and would approve and provide a password, Also they could make a record of D.O.B on joining, although there are some honest mistakes, it should be pretty easy to tell whose lying, and changes to D.O.B could be noted should someone get the idea to change it to trick the admin.

And I suppose parents do have a responisibilty to monitor online activities of their children, I think that this should be encouraged by the admin somewhat, although in certain circumstances its difficult for parents.

This is another feature I have waiting on my desk to be implemented. I know it wont be too popular with the younger ones but I believe its the way to go.

Thats good to hear, I dont mean to sound negative but it shouldnt matter what the younger audience thinks, they shouldnt be playing such things anyway.

How is it going to be implmeneted may i ask?

Are we going to have to prove our age through various links and documents, or something else?

Ill need to look into it, Id expect that certain forums would give you the option of setting up age restrictions for specific areas. That would mean that only registered users who meet the age requirements can access the forums in question and no guests would be allowed.

If thats not available, I can set up password restricted forums and only give the password to those who meet the requirements. Pretty straightforward, really :)

Cool. Will certainly make certain areas of the forum more tolerable.

Cheers for the information and constant updates Ten.

Huh? Why?

For instance simply because its an exclusive feature.

Why?

Because when I was in my local game shop the other day, I overheard a kid that looked about 8-10 years old asking his mother if she could buy him Resident Evil.

Fortunately, the woman had alot more sense and turned him down on the spot.

But lets say she bought the game for him, what could happen? the kid could get nightmares, the parent, looking for someone else to blame would comes straight to Capcom forums and notice childish posts in there, possibly by children under 15 and come up with the wild conclusion that Capcom are aiming unsuitable games at children and encouraging them to talk about them.

Then there is scenario B, Kid plays the game, loves it, comes here to brag about it, parents find out about the lack of restrictions and once again, Capcom get bad publicity, especially if they go to the media and make out that Capcom are a bunch of child-soul-snatchers, tempting children with games.

I was merely saying that it is exclusive. Also, talking about games isnt the same as playing (buying) them. This also applies for movies. One cant directly transfer age restriction.

Ive been a resi fan since I was 4/5! I wasnt very good at it, but I loved it!

Ironically, the only nightmares I had about it, was about yawn, and creatures I created with my own imagination. And they were usually snakebased. Because I had a child phobia of snakes at that point in my life. Doom gave me more nightmares! but then i shouldnt have been playing that either...

Thinking of it, my parents must have hated me...

I found my first school books a while back. That was funny, half my stories were about barry and chris and jill fighting blood thirsty zombies and bows. My teachers must have thought I was really screwed up :D

Age restrictions? hmm, Im old enough so I shouldnt complain. It would remove the immaturity in part, but how are you supposed to prove it! Im 17, but for all you know, I could be 9! All its gonna end up with is people lying about their age. Then I suppose its easier to spot someones age and maturity through their post content.

Unless they are trolling for lulz like Im prone to on occasion.

If the kids get past the age restriction though, the blame can be placed almost entirely on the parents and the child themselves...

It basically stops Capcom from getting the blame for something they had/have little control over anyway.
