I dont think the ones currently sold are - or will be for much longer. It is apparently a matter of cost reduction and BC not purely software based.
Because the BC is hardware and not emulated, like in the Xbox 360?
Its a better way of doing it, BC on the 360 is terrible, which is why they canned it.
sony stoped backwards compatabiltiy for two resions
1, cut costs
2, they were not selling enough ps3 games and came up with the idea that if the take out backwards compatabilty will rase ps3 game sales.
They seem to forget many people buy a ps3 as a cheap blu-ray player and have little or no intrest in games so cnsole to game sales were never going to be record breaking.
the 160GB wont have backwards compatability just like the 80&40GB versions.
they have not updted the backwards compatability list in over a year for the ps3.
both ps3 and 360 have anoyed me with BWC as machines get bigger each gen which means less space or no space for older consoles.
I do own the original 60GB (now with 160GBHDD i put in myself) version but the list of games runing how they should is rediculesy low. Every ps2 game i have tried has problems during playing.
double post sorry
Sony using 160GB PS3 as a test
SCEE pres says they will see how it goes in all territories.
David Reeves, President, SCEE, has revealed to MCV that the recently announced limited edition 160GB PS3 will be used as a test for the appeal of a higher capacity model.
The 160GB is a limited edition that were doing to see how it goes in all the territories because if you look on your site, people are responding to the news by saying I want a 500GB PS3 and then other people saying that I havent filled up any of my hard drive. said Reeves.
The limited edition 160GB PS3 is scheduled to launch in PAL markets on October 31, 2008. The new, storage rich model will carry a recommended retail price of ?449.
