Windows 7 is win. For what I need it for (Media center), it is really, really good.
The beta was pretty good, but they do seem to have sorted out and stabilised it. Of course a clean install is always gonna be great, but I don't intend to install much on it.

For what I have seen, it's better than Vista. Meaning lighter, more compatible with drivers/programs...

I've been waiting for it to get a new computer :)

It'll work fine until they release the first service pack and none of the drivers for installed hardware work again, then subsequent service packs will irradiate your gizzards, enlarge the hole in the ozone layer and re-elect George W Bush.

True, all of this is likely to happen. In the meantime though.

Ah, marketing power...
I doubt my friends would be making marketing for Microsoft. All those who tried the 7 beta said the same thing.

Marketing is what Microsoft did to your friends...

It's COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE that 7 is more compatible than Vista. First, because it's not the OS to be compatible but programs must to be...
Second, Vista and 7 have pretty the same kernel, and core changes are really minimum. If you have an application that works in Windows 7, it will work with Windows Vista, on 100%.
If you have an application that works with Windows Vista, it's not obvious that it runs on Windows 7 because it can do a system check and found that OS version is not 6.0 and than stop.
THIS CAN HAPPEN PRIMARILY WITH DRIVER SETUP. If it does, it's well programmed.

Other that, if a driver is written for XP it could works on Windows Vista, than it could works for 7 too, but you can be sure that if the driver don't works on Windows Vista, it doesn't works on Windows 7.

"Light" point:
Microsoft understood that it doesn't matter what you really offer, but what people think you offer. So they did the same thing that Apple is doing with OSX: the GUI is an high priority process. With that, now Windows gives priority to all application that make an extensive use of I/O operation insteat that CPU compute power.
You see the interface running smoothier, but it's slower. :D

You have to know those things, before judging an important software like an operating system.

It's called "placebo effect".

IMPORTANT!
The first thing to do, it's to change UAC level. You have to set it to the maximum level, because you don't it's completely useless because it doesn't block malicious software.
And please, use your brain: UAC is an important part of every operating system, Windows finally included a security adamantium wall and it's been denigrated... every application must get administration privileges only when it's necessary: install programs, change OS settings, are potentially danger and REQUIRE attention when done.

Unix based OS have a similar system from ages, Windows Vista has the best one. Linux as sudo command that gives admin privileges to the account, not the single process. If a malicious software attacks your PC while you have root privileges you don't have to give it again as it is on Vista.
Mac OSX doesn't protect your password from keylogger...

If you use your brain, antivirus it's not useless. It's BAD.

I had some trouble using drivers that worked on the RC (I saved them) not working with release. But I suspect that it's more to do with jumping from 32 to 64 bit.

But, what it does do, is when you install Firefox for example, it says it's done, and you think "that was quick". THen Windows pops up and says it didn't install properly, would you like to install it in [something else mode]. And it works.

The second thing that's on my mind is that Vista was really bloated with hyperthreading security processes. Windows 7 is supposed to be able to run on way more machines than Vista, and I can believe it. Mine has a performance rating of 3.9, with a lot of things up to 5.2. Not bad for a 3 year old PC.

I'm quite happy that it does everything I need it to do and can idle along at 30-40% CPU.

Mine has a performance rating of 3.9, with a lot of things up to 5.2. Not bad for a 3 year old PC.The rate in Windows 7 is changed a little, along with the maximum from 5,9 to 7,9.

3 years ago Windows Vista came out, every PC that can run Windows Vista can run Windows 7 and VICEVERSA. "Windows 7 is supposed to be able to run on way more machines than Vista" lack of "ON LAUNCH DAY" part.
Microsoft always put it, because the OS doesn't offer better "performance" but the PC became more powerful.

Hey guys, I'll be buying a new laptop soon, with Windows 7. So, as a casual computer user, what should the stats be (RAM etc) for me to be able to run 7 and basic programs without any problems.

Note: I won't be installing many games, using any big, complicated programs...but I may be storing some music etc.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated :D

I think I've got 2gb ram, a 64bit (3 year old ) athlon CPU, a pretty good (3 year old) graphics carda 1tb hard drive and a 320gb hard drive.

Are you buying new? Any laptop (above a netbook) will manage fine.

Mine can handle encoding 3 different streams to mpeg at the same time, so yours will be able to do all that and a bag of chips.

My advice is to look at PC pro or something and spend a little extra on a brand/model regarded as being stable and well built. A lot of companies like Dell will focus on having all the big numbers (4 gb ram, 3ghz cpu etc) where other companies can achieve far more simply by using parts that work well together.

Thanks for my perfect answer :D
Yeah, I'm gonna buy a new laptop. I've heard that a laptop that can handle Vista can handle 7. Is that right?

Start to using Vista/7, than every time you have to touch XP, you'll suffer a deep agony.

Haha, I wouldn't go that far. I wouldn't go back to XP now though...unless I had to.
