Im about to finish my gap year and head off to study Journalism at Uni, having finished a 2 year course in Media (National Diploma in Media).
My girlfriend is at Uni studying Digital Media Arts (moving image, Websites, etc, etc).
The games design course they offer at my college is a pile of trash though, sadly.
EDIT:
Why??

I have five years of industry experience and have just finished my university where I studied a BA Design for Interactive Media Specialist course, which as mentioned above is about interactive media from web design to video game design.
My major/double project was about video games production. If your looking for a good uni to attend it maybe a good start to first play around with some action script in Flash and then when your a bit more comfortable with that learn some basic visual C++. You may want to check out XNA and Dark GDK their good games development platforms.
Uni wise I cannot give many recommendations, personally I would avoid Thames Valley University it used to be good for the courses which I studied but most of the good teachers have now left to other universities or went to teach abroad.
I went Media, Arts and Society; Computer and Video Games at Southampton Solent University. Highly reccommended! Now I work for Headstrong.
