View Full Version : Epic Mickey - The Most Ambitious Title in Years?

Arguably one of the most surreal and mysterious titles in recent years, the lid is finally off on Disney's new Wii exclusive title, Epic Mickey.

Eurogamer:

Epic Mickey is a tale about the 'forgotten' Disney stars: the rides, the characters, the lesser-known cartoons. When nobody any longer cares, they are cast into a dark void; a forgotten world of broken machines and bitter personalities - a bit like Sid's bedroom in Toy Story, but without the friendly furnishings.

This forgotten world is run by Oswald the Rabbit. He was Disney's first creation, made long before Mickey Mouse, and his jealousy of the newcomer has fermented for years. Now, finally, Oswald is ready for revenge.

He unleashes The Phantom Blot to wipe out Mickey and his cartoon world. The Blot pollutes the Disney universe with sticky black ink that makes colours run and fade (as seen on the Game Informer cover), so it's up to Mickey to restore peace and order. And this is where his tools come in.

Mickey has to draw and scribble his way through levels, mending broken bridges by applying the right colour paint or peering through walls after applying thinner. He can even clear rubble from his path by erasing parts of the world.

Our source told us Epic Mickey is a game about thinking and artwork - laterally considering your environment in order to overcome puzzles.

On top of that is a healthy dose of exploration, plus Mickey will be getting "his first makeover in years". "That's why no one's seen his face yet," our source explained, "But he's far more retro than you've seen him for years."

Thoughts?

Game Informer in the US have been doing a promo on the game recently, and seem to be hyping up the game quite a fair bit, given the premise, style and Okami-esque manner of gameplay.

Are Disney back with a bang?

This sounds absolutely amazing.

If the game turns out anything like the artwork you've linked to, then this'll certainly be a day-one purchase for me.

Even if the game still sticks with a childish theme, the fact that it has created a twisted version of the Disney Universe makes it appealing to me. Kind of like American McGee's Alice.

I'm really curious about this game. I'm wondering if it can keep up the 'dark vibe' of the artwork, or if it gets all kiddy and jolly again upon playing the game. Either way, I'll probably buy it. My Wii feels neglected anyway ):

Hopefully it'll be fun to play, as well as nice to look at. =P

The concept art looks really nice. I don't want to be trolling, but it'll be interesting to see how far they can push the Wii to look as much as possible like that.

Can't wait for more news about it :)

I'm more than a little anxious about how this could turn out. It could be a masterpiece, or it could be an utter flop.

EDIT: Actually I pray that it'll be overly gritty.

that artwork is cool

So long as the gameplay is addictive, and that they do make the game dark and at least a bit more adult, then I'm buying this game right off.

The Wii outperforms the PS2 graphically speaking, and FFX and KH2 are still great looking games. The art design is phenomenal and this is a project led by Warren Spector, so my cynicism is all but none existent. I shall look forward to what the London reveal shall bring.

I'm not too sure about it, to be honest~ It doesn't appear anywhere as moody as the concept art, and it doesn't feel as polished as Kingdom Hearts [which is a more or less similar style].

I like the idea of having hand painted textures, but from what I can see in the screenshots it feels a bit rough. Especially in the HUD.

It'll be interesting seeing it in motion, anyway.

It looks kiddy-moody. As in looks kind of evil. Looks just a little disappointing.

The hand painted textures seem a bit childish too.

One thing I do like about it though, the fact you always see the ears. :D

What Mickey will be doing in the game is allowing gamers to make moral decisions about how to change the world around them with paint and thinner. Those decisions will have consequences that affect the environment, interactions with other characters, and even Mickey's appearance and abilities.

Could be interesting.

the third picture on Kotaku is amazing! too bad it's only concept. imagine that on the ps3/xbox, it could actually look like what im imagining. then i look at the screen shots of the wii and it is a tiny bit disappointing, graphics could do a lot for a game like this.

Well, interestingly enough, it was actually going to be a PC/360/PS3 title.

I kinda picture it to use similar shaders that TF2 and SF4 use~ Would be amazing :)

Fletcher received many slanderings for that attention grabbing headline. All it says is that during the early concept stages it was multiplatform until Warren shifted all of his focus into the Wii to make the game as good as it could be.

Gamers are idiots. "Imagine what this would look like on the PS6!"

the thing that annoyed me most was when he said- we didn't want to make ps3/xbox versions then have the wii bellow par, so we only did wii.

thats like saying instead of having 2 good versions and one bad version, we'll just have one bad version!

why do you think the Wii wont be capable of delivering a good title? I think the console can do it. Sure it's not HD but its not always about having the best graphics possible, the game looks good as it is and with the Wii's capabilities it should have some interesting gameplay mechanics.

ya i know. legend of zelda: twilight princess is one of my all-time favourite games. i was simply quoting what the guy said in the article. he said that it could not handle the same game the ps3/xbox/pc so they made it different.
