Yes today my old a** Playstation3 packed up on me. I personally blame Prince of Persia. Have not played it in months I put it in for 10 minutes today and it died.

Goodbye PS3 :(

No they are still ( or did with me ) charging at £128 for a replacement unit. Exchanged at the door. In total from call to getting the refurbished unit it will take a week.

What are your thoughts Spike on making a complaint if I don't get back a backwards compatible unit? I know that they no longer make them, but that technically is what I purchased.

£128 ouch.

You can always complain like i did when my 60GB SKU died but it falls on deaf ears or did with me.
The only way ti get a BWC SKU is to have a referb on and you only get 3 months garentee with it so IMHO it's not worth it.

Keep badgering Sony as I have known a few people get a free repaire/replament

Also mention The Sales of Goods Act
http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html

• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

As already stated and proved in the link provided here in the UK it 6 years and 5 in Scotland that the equipment should be fault free and you can claim from the company in question for a replacement or fix for free with in this time.

How long ago did you buy it, and where from? You may be able to get the retailer to replace/repair under the Sale of Goods Act, on the grounds it is an expensive, high-quality piece of electronics, and therefore has failed within an unreasonable time.

Mine is/was original. Brought it 2nd hand from game so I don't think I have a route there and I am pretty much guessing the same with sony on that front so I have not told them I got it second hand. Also I have personally had it for nearly 3 years.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to my second PS3 failure in less than 2 months!
It won't read disc now. Yay! Good times.

Blu-ray failure. I feel for you.

Do you know/think they will replace this one for free? Especially as they gave me this one just over 2 months ago.

Spike 74
25-11-09, 20:18
Did they give you a guarantee with this new one?

Was it a full replacement or a refurbished?

If new it will have 12 months guarantee if refurbished it should have at least 90 days (3 months)

Sky_Dragon

Its refurbished, and I didn't personally make the call but I am fairly sure there was nothing said about a guarantee...?

Same thing happened to me two sundays ago. Yellow light of death is a pain in the ass.

I'm lucky, as mine was still under my extended warranty (with 5 months to spare), and so my dad rang them up, and they're going to fix my console for free.

I would say that this is a good thing, as I can still play my PS2 games, and who knows, I might still have my save files when I get it back.

I just would have preferred a new console though, as now I'm always going to have this worry in the back of my mind of "when will my ps3 die again?"

That's for ringing Sony, technically they should give you a free console. I just doubt they will. Supposedly they didn't admit to the faulty consoles to begin with, so they probably don't like to now.

I think they should just give us replacements up to a certain amount of years, like Microsoft now do. Microsoft openly admit to the problems, but Sony seem to have ego issues, due to their consoles not being invincible.

For a 10 year console, mine lasted 2 years and about 7 months. Not very good really.

I hope you get yours sorted, man. :)

Called this morning and they are going to come and collect it and repair it for free. It will take up to 3 weeks, but I guess I can't complain considering it will be free, and they promised back before christmas. Otherwise there will be hell.

Thats good to hear.3 weeks is a bit long MS have a Turn around of 7 days for the RROD

Sky_Dragon
26-11-09, 16:13
Mines not dead though, just won't read discs. When it YLOD on me, it took 5 days.
I am guessing they have to replace the laser, and are covering themselves as just incase.

Spike 74
26-11-09, 16:19
It's as good as dead if you can't play your disc games

They will replace and probably upgrade the blu-ray drive.

It happend to me with my first ps3 and it was only 2 or 3 weeks old but i got a straight exchange so that was fine for me.

Odd I have just had the the delivery man come, and he swapped it for another one, even though they said it would be taken and repaired? Should I ring Sony again about this? Or should I just be thankful?

You are really unlucky. YLD is really rare

It's not that rare, granted it's not on the scale RROD.

Most of my friends who have had the 60GB have had the YLOD.

So do I call Sony about the fact it has possibly been replaced and not taken for repair?

I wouldn't think so as it would have been replaced by them and it was quick:hop:

Looks like Sony and Microsoft both aren't perfect afterall. The Wii is more stable imo.

I'll carry on here...
I have had the thought of possibly trading in this Playstation 3 in exchange for a sexier, probably more reliable slim. Thoughts? Is it worth it? I know I'd lose my BWC but to be honest I have not played a PS2 game in years.

If you do you can get a full years new guarantee and also buy a extended guarantee on top.

Lol, it looks like a strategy from sony - releasing updates which will also cause YLOD on BWC ps3 consoles :D, so you could replace the console with no-BWC one and download future ps2 games from PSN :D

Conspiracy!:spy:
