A FATHER and daughter who have revealed they are couple and have a child together had another baby who died a few days after birth from a congenital heart disease, court documents show.

John Earnest Deaves and his daughter Jennifer Anne Deaves are at the centre of an incest scandal in South Australia over their seven-year relationship.

The pair revealed their relationship on Channel 9s 60 Minutes program last night, saying they were just asking for some respect and understanding.

In March this year, they were placed on three-year good behaviour bonds after pleading guilty to two counts of incest.

District Court sentencing judge Steven Millsteed said the first count of incest was based on an act of sexual intercourse which resulted in the birth of the couples first child.

The second count of incest related to an act of sexual intercourse which resulted in the birth of their second child in May last year.

The first child was born in 2001 but died a few days after birth due to a congenital heart disease, Judge Millsteed said.

The couple had started a relationship together after being reunited in 2000, almost 30 years after Mr Deaves separated from Jennys mother.

Because of problems with her own marriage, Ms Deaves had gone to live with her father at Yongala, in South Australia.

Their physical relationship developed later that year and both ended their marriages and began living together.

Each of you say that the other has provided care and affection that was missing in your marriage, Judge Millsteed said.

You also say that although you are father and daughter, that you were virtually strangers when your relationship commenced and that the relationship was based on mutual love and respect.

The couple had their first child while living in Rockhampton, Queensland, before moving to Port Pirie, in South Australia.

After the birth of their second child they moved to Bordertown, near the Victorian border where the Department of Families and Communities became aware of their relationship and turned the matter over to police.

Judge Millsteed said that when contacted by police the Deaves made full admissions.

He said both Jenny and John Deaves told him that they accepted their sexual relationship must end but hoped they would be able to continue to support one another and the children.

But he said while the case was not typical he had to impose a sentence that impressed upon them that any resumption of their incestuous relationship was unacceptable.

The offence of incest exists not merely to protect children from sexual abuse, Judge Millsteed said.

In my view, other relevant factors include the need to prevent the high risk of congenital defects in children born of incestuous relationships and to prevent children suffering psychological harm and social stigmatisation.

Revealing their relationship on Nine last night, the Deaves said they were just asking for some respect and understanding.

Mr Deaves admitted that he initially thought having sex with his daughter was wrong.

Emotions take over, as people no doubt realise. There are times during your life where emotions do rule the heart, it rules the head, he said.

I knew it was illegal. Of course, I knew it was illegal but you know, so what.

I guess since the daughter gave consent it is ok. But, of course, we dont really know if it started years ago and the guy could have been grooming her as a child.

I cant really make a judgment call on this...due to me not having enough information.

I just cant understand these kinds of people, they were raised badly and they keep generating the same attitude for the next generation instead of trying to have a better one. I really hope that those people will get what they deserve in the end, sick.

And what do people in a loving relationship deserve?

They both consented...they are both adults. We only see it as sick or wrong because this is the way we were taught.

If you had grown up in a society where it was deemed ok, would you still think the same?

Its all quite Freudian really...despite Freud being proven wrong on most accounts.

It is just interesting to note that Morality isnt really something we are born with...we develop it as we grow. The whole nature vs nurture thing.

I believe both are important, but Tabula Rasa comes to mind when it comes to human morality.

I see.

Well I don t want to think about growing in other society because I don t care, here as in every other moral society as it is in almost most of the world, there are certain principles that you earn when you grow from the society and even from growing morally despite the connection you can have with the different society you might grew up on. Now I cant tell you its okay because I wasn t raised in some other place by different principles, but I can tell you this, most of the time these kind of people find themselves behind bars and just banned from everyone, maybe you cant blame them as they grew on something else but its very hard to change it and Im sure some people try. Its not a religion thing or something alike, its A father and his daughter which is indeed a sick thing and believe me, it doesn t matter in what society you are.

Im not saying it is ok, dont get me wrong...id never do it myself *shudders*

But im just playing Devils Advocate here...trying to get you to think about it before you just shrug it off as some sick perverted family in Australia.

Lets take, for example, pedophilia. We all know this is wrong, correct? But what about the ancient Greeks? That great, philosophical, warrior like civilisation that is so well portrayed in things like 300 and Troy.

Did you know that it was common practice to have young boys as sex toys back then? Plato even had his own little sex slave. This was neither classed as homosexuality or pedophilia...because neither really existed back then. It is only as a society changes that their morals change.

*shrugs* just something to think about.

Well, regardless the point still stands; if certain lower species can do it, so can humanity.

Also you cant look to the past for examples to justify anything in this age of humanity; its not like you can say hey, dont attack those slave drivers, we used to do it a few hundred years ago! You can only live in the now. Hell, 300 years from now they could be putting us down due to the sick, low age of sexual consent.

What makes them lower? I know im being pedantic here...im just trying to get people to engage their brains.

Incest is a documented thing among several species across the globe. Why do humans have to be better?

Humanity claims to be the greatest on the planet...but why is it that we are one of the only species on the planet that cannot communicate with any other species?

Why is it that we have to starve an area of all its resources to survive when no other species, to my knowledge, has to do this?

but why is it that we are one of the only species on the planet that cannot communicate with any other species?

Messia, thats true that society changed and indeed a lot, but it doesn t mean that if it, was before ,that it is understandable as of now; humanity took a lot of years to become well aware for a truly logical and corrected morals.

And who set the moral ground on whose best depending on who they sleep with?

Think about it, we claim to be the greatest. Not because we know for a fact that we are, but we assume that it is fact that we are.

Cats and dogs can obviously communicate...2 different species, communicating. Various other species across the planet can communicate with loads of other species. Yet we cant do anything to talk to any other animal.

I see that as a kind of mixture between them not being able to, and us not being able to. Rather than it solely being upon the other species.

And as for it being common sense that we are better than primates? What if the primates thought it was common sense that they are better than us?

I mean, seriously...have we deluded ourselves, or are we ACTUALLY better than every other species on this planet?

We have technology, big woop...stick a man in the middle of a desert and he probably wont survive...yet loads of other animals will do.

Anyways, im going for a fag...ill be back in about 30 minutes.

Also, again...playing Devils Advocate. Trying to broaden horizons and all that. I dont neccessarily believe everything i am saying.

Biology - hence the mutants.

Think about it, we claim to be the greatest. Not because we know for a fact that we are, but we assume that it is fact that we are.

We ARE the greatest. The only time we wont be the greatest is if superior alien lifeforms arrive.

Cats and dogs can obviously communicate...2 different species, communicating.

... what.

And as for it being common sense that we are better than primates? What if the primates thought it was common sense that they are better than us?

Then theyd be wrong. Thats why we can base our assumption that we are on evidence - just look around you.

I mean, seriously...have we deluded ourselves, or are we ACTUALLY better than every other species on this planet?

Of course were better, were the highest intelligence living on the Earth that we know off.

We have technology, big woop...stick a man in the middle of a desert and he probably wont survive...yet loads of other animals will do.

And yet loads of other animals wont, either.

Evolution is a form of mutation, correct? There are bad mutations and good mutations.

If an incestuous couple had a super baby (not likely, but possible), would it be classed as a good thing?

And i know it is all just arguing for the sake of arguing. But Im just in a philosophical mood. Im bored and alone at the moment after having a reasonably bad day...and just feel like using my brain.

As for the technology part...if you take away what we use...infact, no...lets make this better. If you have 1 man (or woman, whatever), and you take away what this 1 person cannot build themselves...then they are taken down to the most primitive functions.

A modern human relies on others...a large social network with major problems, correct? Whilst all other animals, lets face it, do rely on primitive instincts.

So a man/woman stuck in a new situation, and an animal stuck in a new situation. The chances are, even if both die...the animal will survive for much longer.

Incest is wrong. Theres no denying it from both a cultural and biological perspective. There is a larger incidence of chromosomal abberations in children born from an incestual relationship. Thats the biological proof. Culturally its just wrong.

At least, thats what weve been bought up to think. Personally I am against it. I can see why people would think it was ok though.

:!: Police: Captive had at least 6 children by her father. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/04/27/austria.cellar/index.html?eref=rss_topstories)

AMSTETTEN, Austria (CNN) -- Austrian police believe a 73-year-old man held his daughter captive in his cellar for the past two decades and fathered at least six children with her, according to police and state-run news reports Sunday.
art.investigator.ap.jpg

An investigator works on his laptop in front of the house where a father allegedly abused his daughter.

The woman, identified as 42-year-old Elisabeth F., has been missing since 1984, when she was 18 years old, police said at a news conference.

The situation came to light earlier this month after her daughter -- a 19-year-old woman, identified as Kristen F. -- was hospitalized in Amstetten after falling unconscious, according to police.

She was admitted to a hospital in Amstetten, outside Vienna, by her grandfather with a note from her biological mother requesting help. Amstetten is a rural town about 150 km (93 miles) west of Vienna.

But police said a DNA test later revealed her grandfather, Josef F., was also her father, according to ORF, Austrias state-run news agency.

That sparked a police investigation, which revealed that Josef F. may have fathered at least six children with his daughter, forcing her and three of the surviving children to live in the cellar of his house, according to ORFs Peter Schmitzberger.

The children are now between 5 and 19 years old.

* Dad and daughter admit incest produced babies

Police are awaiting DNA tests to verify their relationship to Josef F., who faces arrest for severe crimes against family members, according to police. So far, he has not given a statement to police.

Police spokesman Franz Polzer told ORF that the 73-year-old has led police to several hidden rooms in his cellar accessible only by an electronic passcode that he provided to police. Video Watch a report on the discovery ¯

On Sunday, police searched the hidden rooms where Josef F. admitted he kept his daughter and their children, Polzer told ORF. The rooms included sleeping quarters, a kitchen and a bathroom, which Josef F. told police he built, Polzer said. Neighbors told ORF they were shocked to hear the news, and had no indication such horrors were taking place in their town.

One cant imagine how it could happen, how nobody could realize anything of what was going on in the cellar of this house, Schmitzberger told CNN. Its quite unimaginable.

Acting on a confidential tip, Amstetten police apprehended Josef F. and Elisabeth F. on Saturday near the hospital for questioning, according to a police statement. Once police assured the daughter that she would never have contact with her father again, she was able to tell the whole story, Schmitzberger said.

Josef F. lived upstairs with his wife, Rosemarie F., who police said had no idea about her husbands other family living in the cellar.

Josef F. and Rosemarie F. had adopted three of the children that he had with his daughter, according to police. He told his wife that his missing daughter had dropped the unwanted children off at the house because she could not take care of them, police said.

The other three children -- Kerstin, 19; Stefan, 18; and Felix, 5 -- remained locked in the basement with their mother, according to police. None had seen the light of day during their entire time in captivity, police said.

After she was detained Saturday, Elisabeth F. gave police a psychologically and physically disturbed impression, police said in a statement. She told them her story after she was assured her children would be protected from further harm.

She said her father began sexually abusing her at age 11. On August 8, 1984 -- weeks before she was reported missing -- her father enticed her into the basement, where he drugged her, put her in handcuffs and locked her in a room, she told police. For the next 24 years, she was constantly raped by her father, resulting in the six surviving children, she said, according to the police statement.

She told police she gave birth to twins in 1996, but one of the babies died a few days later as a result of neglect, and Josef F. removed the infants body and burned it.

She told police that only her father supplied her and her children with food and clothing, and that she did not think his wife knew anything about their situation.

When Kerstin fell ill earlier this month, Josef F. apparently told his wife and the hospital that his missing daughter had dropped off the sick girl on his doorstep.

In an effort to find out what might be ailing 19-year-old Kerstin, the hospital asked the media to put out a bulletin requesting any information about the girl or her missing mother, attorney general Gerhard Sedlacek told NTV.
advertisement

Sometime later, Josef F. brought Elisabeth F. out of the cellar, telling his wife that she had returned home with her two children after a 24-year absence, police said.

He took Elisabeth F. to the hospital to talk with doctors about Kerstins condition, and at that point, authorities became aware of her situation, Sedlacek said.

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai tells Darren Waters the PS3 will be the leading console.

PlayStation 3 will help Sony reclaim its position as the leading games console maker, the head of the firms console division has said.

Speaking to BBC News, Kaz Hirai said the machine would overhaul rivals Nintendo and Microsoft within its 10-year lifecycle.

PlayStation 3 sales have outstripped those of Microsoft Xbox 360 in Europe but it lags behind in North America.

Nintendos Wii console is the number one next-generation machine globally.

Mr Hirai said Sony was engaged in a marathon race with Nintendo and Microsoft.

More than 10.5 million PlayStation 3s were sold worldwide by the end of 2007. To date, in Europe more than five million PS3s have been sold.

Nintendo had shipped more than 25 million Wiis worldwide by April this year, while Microsoft reported 19 million 360s shipped by the same period.

Both firms have reported production supply problems in the past year.

I am very confident that after the 10-year lifecycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position
Kaz Hirai, Sony

Mr Hirai said: Weve only really begun to scratch the surface with PlayStation 3 but I am confident that given the long life-cycle we have planned for the machine we are going to have a very good install base in all of the major territories.

I am very confident that after the 10-year lifecycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position.

Fuel growth

Mr Hirai said Sony continued to look into the future development of consoles beyond the PlayStation 3.

He said that while new PlayStation hardware had been introduced five years into the lifecycle of the last two generations of machines, it was difficult to predict when a new PlayStation platform would emerge.

Its very difficult to say at this point in time.

We need to take a look at advances in technology in various areas, such as semiconductors, graphics chips, output devices, mainly TV and monitors, to see where we would like to benchmark our next generation product.

He said that Sonys investment in future console hardware technology remained important.

And you can make the investments, for example, to the tune of the investments we made with previous consoles, because we look at this business as a 10-year lifecycle. We dont let our consoles go by the wayside after five years.

Network gaming

By managing a portfolio of consoles that we have - PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 - we are able to look at the business in totality.

Mr Hirai said the company had begun investigation of pure network gaming, without the need for a dedicated console.

Its something we would look at. We have had a lot of discussion internally about where the road map will take us.

PlayStation 3 launch in Japan
PlayStation 3 endured a difficult launch

[With network gaming] were also dependent on the network infrastructure available in all the territories we do business in.

Some have faster broadband access than others. When you consider that content that plays on PlayStation 3 can go as high as 50GB its going to be very difficult to deliver 50GB to consumers in some parts of the world in a timely fashion.

Because of the limitations, he said Blu-ray discs remained the best and most efficient way to deliver content.

He said sales of PlayStation 3 would continue to be driven by games and by the line-up of titles this year.

If you look at line-up coming out this year - Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift , Little Big Planet, there is a whole raft of titles between now and the end of the year which will really help fuel growth of the install base.

Mr Hirai described the launch of PlayStation 3 as difficult and affected by teething problems.

Some challenges

We had some challenges when we launched the PlayStation 3 in major territories. We were not able to supply North America and Japan with enough units.

There was also some concern in the media and from customers about the lack of titles available at launch.

PlayStation 3 s 10 year plan: Kaz Hirai s full interview with Darren Waters
He added: That situation has been remedied to the satisfaction of consumers. The software line-up is looking good for this year and certainly for the holiday period.

He said the technology inside the PlayStation 3 had been a steep learning curve for developers.

I think they are beginning to embrace the technology and are able to express their creativity on the platform certainly more than they were able to at launch.
