ok this is starting to drive me crazy

i bought this game two years ago, and been playing it on an off again. Im trying to unlock all the characters, but in the menu where you buy characters, its all empty now.
I have 56 characters choose from now, which on the back it says ...total of 56 playable characters.., but on the character selection screen there are still 8 ? symbols on the character board, which im assuming means there are more characters to unlock. Can anybody shed some light into this?

So my character selection screen looks like this (X - denotes character, ? = ? box. . = background [cant press spacebar to indent]):

Theres no real in-depth faq i can find and nothing helpful on the wiki pages..

If I remember correctly, you have to continue playing arcade mode several more times before characters reappear for sale. In the meantime, buy any stages/artwork/colours as they come up. The last few characters will show eventually.
