Heya guys.

Ive always been interested in playing the Half Life games but after the release of The Orange Box Im not too sure where the best place to start is. Story is always a selling point for me so I was thinking of starting from the very first game and then mabye purchasing the Orange Box for the 360 afterwards.

But Im more keen on starting from Half Life 2 since the first game seems a bit too archaic for me. Is there some sort of updated hihg resolution version avaliable? I dont mind really but would just like some advice from you reliable guys. ;)

The first Half-Life is very cheap now, although its a little dated, its still worth a play and could probably run on your PC, the Orange Box is probably the best deal ive seen, 5 games: 3 are Half Life 2 and its 2 episodes, 1 being the amazing portal, and the last being a not so good Team Fortress (An online only game where two teams fight eachother, each has skills like medic etc), So go for both, I say.

Well I got a pretty decked out PC so I think Im safe!

The thing is there are quite a few exapnsions to the original Half Life game right? So I hope Im not missing out on a lot.

uh.. Ive got a problem.. whats more worth buying for my PS3, Army of Two or Orange Box?
Ive heard Army of Two is just like playing Gears of War in co-op which I thought was an amazing game.
and Ive heard Portal is a great game and Ive played Half-Life 2 and all that on my PC..

Orange Box on PS3 is dreadful.
The Port was handled by EA and not the original team.
Screen shearing, bad slowdown, framrate problems.
If you can get it on PC or failing that 360 as the PS3 version sadly is well below quality of the other version. I hate EA lol

aaaahh... aaaalright, here go more games for my 360. (god damn 360 with its good choices of games.. I WILL prove one day that PS3 has better games!)
anyway, I read reviews and stuff about Army of Two.. hell, I dont need it. Ill rather just wait for Gears of War 2.. EA is untrustable.. they also keep making bad sport games.

The PS3 dose have good games just that orange box has been ruined by EA sadly by being a poor port.

Start with the first game. You can buy a pack for about œ5-œ10 that has all the expansion packs, and they all come with a slight graphical update.

http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/102356/Half-Life-Generations-3/Product.html

Half Life
Half Life: Oppossing Forces
Half Life: Blue Shift

Then move onto The Orange Box:

Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2

Without playing the first half life (and expansion packs), i honestly think the second game will come across as confusing and completely random, making little sense whatsoever. However, after playing the first games, everything that is revealed in the second is fully understandable and actually expands on what we are told in the first games.

Ive completed HL2 and Eps 1 & 2 on PS3, and was worried, having read reviews about the frame rate problems, but its sensationlism at its best IMO.

The game slowed down about twice, across all 3 chapters :p

When it did slow down, it seemed to me that it was caused by trying to run forwards too far too quickly after a level had just been loaded, maybe causing a problem with the streaming not having time to buffer enough data.

Team Fortress sucks, IMO, when you could be playing CoD4 instead.

Every gamer should complete Portal at least once in their lives.

Your the only person I have come across that claims this.

Having played this it was so bad I sold it and got it on 360.
Tried it on 720p and even standerd defernition and sufferd terrible. The highest defernition out put for the game is 720p it wont do 1080p:devil:

I have spoke to loads of people as well and they have the same problem.
Working in a game shop the orange box is one of the most traded in game on ps3 due to the problems.

One should perhaps add that there has recently been a patch (http://www.justpressplay.net/viewarticle/ps3s-the-orange-box-receives-update-no-360-love/) for the PS3 version.

meh... its... ok.
I really hate the 360 n all.. but hell Id rather play it on 360 as it was made for 360.
anyway, did DMC4 lag on 360? I bought it on PS3 and it doesnt lag anything.. but the game looks kinda heavy, like that it could lag on 360... so does it.. or am I talking bullsh**.

Has it?
I did not know that.

No Ice DMC 4 on 360 run smoothly.

EDIT.
Thats only Team Fortress 2 patch and it has not delt with problems with the other games on the disc.

Well thank you TZM for being one of the few people not to turn the topic into a console preference debate.

Ill definetly buy it on my next pay check. Cheers!

Play HL 1 and expansions first, youll forget about the graphics once you get into that experience.

You can also buy the anthology that ZombieMessia mentioned on Steam for œ7.50 ($15) for HL and all the expansions. Take note that Blue Shift has a high resolution models upgrade pack for all the HL1 range (it came out yearsss ago but its better looking than the stock HL graphics).

Also interesting to note is that there is a small MOD team online rebuilding the original Half Life using the HL2 source code.

There is a website somewhere, ill have a look for it. It looks beautiful, and i hope they make it soon :P

I found it sometime last year whilst i was a regular on the old forum. It looks amazing and i really cant wait for them to finish this. I wonder if they will do OF and BS for this as well??

Yeh it looks good and Ill play it. Though problem I have with mods like that is, Id rather play the original how its intended - most projects like these the team cant seem help re-writing the script or chucking in a load of extra monsters where they dont belong and ruin the actual planned gameplay Valve created. I mean, just listening to the music samples on that site is painful (in the sense that theyre not tying in with the HL soundscape).

Agreed. It will be interesting to see the approach that this team take with the mod...as in, how close to the original game it will be.

I think itd probably be best to see this as a kind of Half Life 1 tribute, rather than a remake though...but by the looks of it, theyre keeping it as close to the original as they can.
