View Full Version : Reward: New Game Wanted!
I am looking to purchase a new PS3. But I dont know what to get. I need some to keep me interested until GTA:IV
I was looking at Army of Two, however I think I want to get something different from a shooter as at the moment I only have FPS and Sports games.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The games Im most playing at the moment are Call of Duty 4 and Burnout Paradise - both excellent titles.
Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank are also very good, but no online, so once youre done, youre done. Heavenly Sword is pretty short (and sweet) too, but then so is CoD4 offline.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma is nice (and cheap) but very hard.
Also, if your PS3 is online, you need Super Stardust HD from the PSN store. That game rules... and was only œ3.50 when I got it b)
Im sure Im leaving something essential off the list, but Im at work so.... Oh yeah, Everybodys Golf comes out on Friday (UK) which is also superb.
Best advice: get online to the PSN store and go crazy downloading demos. If you cant get online, get to Blockbuster or somewhere else that does rentals. HF!

Heavenly Sword is worth a look.
Popular games, which I dont necessarily recommend, are Uncharted, Motor Storm, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. As for multiplatform games, there are Assassins Creed (overrated, in my opinion), Virtua Fighter V (rather good, if you like the genre), Conan and Viking: Battle for Asgard (I would recommend checking and renting the last two before buying). Then there is, of course Devil May Cry 4. If you like horrible writing and downright ridiculous lines its a safe choice.
I think there are demos for Motor Storm and Tools of Destruction. There are definately demos for Uncharted, Sigma, Heavenly Sword and Conan.
P.S.:
Even though you are not looking for FPS here, F.E.A.R. is rather compelling. Personally I enjoy the slow-motion combat coupled with nicely weapons. The voice acting is suprisingly good. I would give it a 7 on an objective basis. Personally I would give it a nine. But thats just because it worked for me. A lot of unused potential in the story and music departments, its rather obvious how much better this couldve worked when it works.
heavenly sword is nothing but eye candy tech demo
terrible story, no replay value and I completed it in 2 hours 45 minutes give or take a few mins. Not worth the SRP at all.
Cod 4, Burnout paradise, UT 3, resistance FOM, GT 5 prologue, ratchet & klank TOD all are much better in terms of game play they may not look as stunning but at least they offer more than eye candy.
Yes 777 they are demos to all those, er well not sure on connan as the demo on the 360 put me off it.

Depends. I tend to take a lot longer than the average playthrough. That is because I normally explore everything there is, well, everything I can find, that is. I think the combat does offer some depth. The story is not bad, especially not in comparison. And yes, the acted cutscenes, voice work and graphics are rather good. I wouldnt buy it at full price either. However, the price has dropped to GBP 29,99 and it sells for ca. 20,- on Amazon Marketplace.
Conan is not a top notch game. Nonetheless, for people who like the character it is pretty decent. Hence my suggestion to rent it.
15 to 19 GBP is about the right price IMO for heavenly sword. I was looking forward to this game and ended up real disappointed. I would suggests rent first.
I understand what your going through Joe, I only just got a PS3 two months ago and ive been wondering what to get for it, here are some of my favourites ive bought so far:
The Club
A basic third person shooter thats actually quite entertaining
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - Game Of The Year Edition
A first person RPG that will last you for a very long time
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
A rather good hack and slash game, its hard and will last you a long time, its also pretty serious if you dont like the dry humour of DMC4
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
A very Tomb Raider-y type adventure, its pretty cheesy but the actions fairly nice.
Lost Planet:
Yeah, ANOTHER third person shooter but its pretty fun, should be cheap in supermarkets, saw it in Asda for œ22
--
Assassins Creed is only for you if you like Prince of Persia style platforming mixed with extremely basic assassinations, it is fairly overrated, but it looks rather nice.
Heavenly Sword doesnt feel as polished as DMC4, but its older and should cost less.
And, if you want FPS action, go for The Orange Box, œ50 for 5 games isnt a bad offer, even better if its cheaper.

Dry humor? Thats not quite it.

I love that gamre compilation shame EA messed up the PS3 version with terrible terrible frame reate. Shame on yo EA!
I have been thinking of Gran Turismo 5 Prologe. But I dont know if its worth it as I am going to want the whole thing!
F.E.A.R and Oblivion sound quite interesting to me. I may have to go and purchase either one or both of these later.
Thanks
Oblivian is a great game I have clocked up over 100 hours and still not complete.
FEAR great game
GT5 is still at least a year away so prologue should help fill the gap.
I know but between now and Gran Turismo 5 there is GTA:IV, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Battlefield. So I just dont know if I can justify it.

Personally I dont like Oblivion. Its pretty much the GTA of RPGs. Relatively week story, bland characters and environments and on top of that one is supposed to play it in first person view (third person optional). But it really depends. I cant be compared with the Final Fantasy type of RPGs, though.
Sick of writing a post then getting a error message!
Oblivian is a totally different style RPG than the JRPG.
The story is very good no random battles which a lot of people hate.
I do prefer JRPGs my self really enjoying Lost Oddessy atm
GTA P œ17.99 0nline at play.com

True, its a western RPG. The only ones of these Ive enjoyed so far are the Baldurs Gate PC games (not so much anymore) and Fable. But they dont come close to good JRPGs, as far as I am concerned (Im not a fan of Sci-Fi hence excluded ME). It starts with the protagonist not having a complex personality. See Oblivions LEGO system.

Oops, wrong use of phrase, sorry, I meant cheesy, not deadpan.
Speaking of RPGs, I didnt really like Enchanted Arms that much, its a rather simple RPG with a overly simplistic battle system, I played it for 2 hours before I had enough.

Lost planet, and motorstorm are pretty entertaining games. You MUST get them, extremely fun, imo.
Ended up buying Oblivion and Gran Turismo Prologe 5 today. Of which I have been loving GTP5. Seriously fun. Takes me back to my school days. Have not really given Oblivion a chance yet but will look into tomorrow. And let you know what I think then.
Thanks for the advice.
Enchanted Arms is a pretty good bet, mainly because of its humour (the over-the-top gay...sorry...homosexual character). It has interesting characters and an average storyline. However, the graphics are pretty bad for an RPG and the music isnt memorable. The battles are more complicated than the usual battle-system (Final Fantasy-style).
I personally didnt like it that much at first, but it grew on me as it went on. This could mean that a rent will not unlock the games full potential.
I must say this. I have the 360 version, so my opinion may be completely void here :s . I dont know the differences between the 360 version and the PS3 version.
Worth the money.

The PS3 version has no LIVE functionality but to be honest its pretty bland anyway. Enchanted Arms is extremely low quality compared to the other games available today.
Heavenly Sword is probably worth a rent only - its pretty short and you will find yourself disappointed if you want a lengthy game. It however, is pretty good and cinematic - the production values are excellent.
I can instantly recommend both DMC4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma if you are into the genre. Both are awesome games with DMC4 having a bit of an unrealstic touch added to it. Dont listen to the people who havent even played the game and go by just reviews and watching vids on the net. Its still a pretty decent game.
Uncharted is pretty decent but I completed it pretty fast - though I am waiting for a day when I will want to play through it again.
Motorstorm is supposed to be good but Im not entirely a fan of the genre.
I bought Oblivion back when it first launched and spent about 50+ hours on it but have decided that I didnt really enjoy it. Its a somewhat bland RPG with not a lot of variability (though if you like the whole Western RPG thing then go for it!)
F.E.A.R is boring. Ive finished all of them except for Perseus Mandate and on both the 360 and PS3 they are kinda weird in that they give the player the option to complete any map they want whenever they want. Its a pretty half assed port too. Id stay away - theres better stuff on the system for FPS like Resistance too.
Lost Planet is somewhat glitchy and inferior to the 360 version in terms of performance, but superior in terms of content. If you are interested in it though, try out the demo and brace yourself for the Colonies Edition, since otherwise youll be left behind playing with no one online while everyone plays Colonies.

I agree with that, I didnt want to recommend DMC4 since it would look pretty biased coming from me, its fun basher that can be as inventive as you want I guess.
I already own both DMC4 and Ninja Giaden: Z
I purchased Oblivion but as yet have found it quite bland and hard to get into. And I have been finding the endless wandering rather annoying. Maybe it needs greater concentration, but at the moment I am finding it hard to enjoy.
Gran Turismo 5 Prologe however is very fun. Need to start saving for a worthwhile car to go online with though!

Yeah well. Despite making it sound like universal truths or facts, what Mr. Mitchell posted are pretty much merely various opinions.

Near enough everything posted anywhere is merely an opinion. A fact is merely an opinion held by many.
Can i just ask though...the topic states reward at the beginning of the title...is there some sort of explanation behind this???

My guess is that its a mock up of a wanted poster used in the old west, I was concerned that people would mistake this as:
Post a game Idea and get a reward.

I just figured he was offering a reward for finding the guy a game or something, but nothing has been said of it since the topic was started...i just found it a little odd :P

He didnt mention me at all / what are you on about?
As for Joe not liking Oblivion - give it some time it may grow on you but beware it will chew a lot of time up.
There is no real reason behind the title saying reward. Other than the fact that maybe it would make some people look. To the point this has been one of the more successful non-spam topics. So really there is your own reward, you all making the forum a nicer more friendly place to be.
