Ive been a fan of RE2 for a long time, but here is something I dont get:

During the last mission as HUNK in The Umbrella Chronicles, HUNK was retrieving the G sample from the sewer, What I dont understand is, why where there zombies when the outbreak only just occurred? He fought of Birkin (who caused the outbreak), yet his trip back to the surface was met with a seemingly city wide infection, there are journals documenting symptoms prior to HUNKS fight with Birkin, so, to put it simply:

How did the city get infected in RE2?

hi dante! this is easy to explain: s you play claire or leon in RE2 you l8er meet annette birkin. he tells you about umbrellas intention of stealing the virus. then a sequence follows with the happenings. birkin finds the soldiers who took the samples and as he slashes them they let the samples fall. birkin himself (selfinfected with the G-Virus, already a mutant) feeds on it. then come some rats and lick the samples off, so they were responseble for the mess upside the sewers. they infected everything.

The events for RE2 (and thus HUNKs mission) all take place around 3 days into the city wide infection.

The abandoned industrial complex on the outskirts of Raccoon City was actually an Umbrella owned treatment and disposal facility that Umbrella purposefully overloaded with contaminated bodies. This caused an infection to spread around that section of the city.

Around this time, HUNK and his team were sent in to retrieve the G-virus from Birkin, everything went haywire and both the T and G-virus samples were crushed and later eaten by rats. The rats bit people and infected them. They were also eaten by Crows and bitten by Fleas...the infection spread quite fast due to this.

This is also on top of the fact that not every B.O.W from the Arklay Incident was destroyed, meaning that they slowly approached the city and spread the infection from the outside in.

On top of this, we see various other smaller outbreaks and spills throughout Outbreak File 1 and File 2, leading to other, smaller, outbreaks throughout the city as a whole.

All of these smaller outbreaks and infections culminated into the Raccoon City incident that we know and love today. It is also interesting to note that various documents throughout the series show that almost everything that happened in Raccoon City was planned by Umbrella, and then blamed on various underlings such as Morpheus D. Duvall.

Hell, Umbrella even go so far as dropping several test Tyrants into the mix, along with the U.B.C.S and the Watchdogs.

Aye, but the problem is, Birkin killed Ben, therefore, was a mutant, that scene was a flash back.

yes, but this flashback explains in RE2 how the virus spread out in raccoon. and ben was just a journalist discovering umbrellas intentions.

Nonetheless, the flashback only gives one reason for the outbreak in the city.

And Ben was actually investigating Chief Brian Irons and happened to discover his being bribed by Birkin...it was purely an accident that Ben ended up investigating Umbrella.

i agree that is a flashback and ONE reason, but it is the main reason, isnt it?! and investigating chief irons was eventually the reason why he was imprisoned. i think also the water of the sewers may caused exploration of the virus, aftzer it got cleaned and then in every houshold...?

is considered the main reason, yes, but we never fully get told about the smaller outbreaks and their importance...so it is anybodys guess really.

Im a bt of a pedant when it comes to Resident Evil facts and canon, etc.

As for the water infection, it is kind of hinted at in one of the original RE comics, but never explained within the games...but what with the T-virus being easily spread through water, it wouldnt surprise me. Though i wouldnt be so sure with the G-virus.

Can someone please jog my memory?

In which game can you read a newspaper talking about missing people and groaning noises coming from the sewers?

I cant remember if its Resident Evil 2, or Resident Evil 3 (it might even be from one of the Outbreak games, if so, then not canon), but the news paper has a date, obviously the missing people and the groaning noises were zombie related, but this was before the RPD knew what was going on.

Might be relevant, might not.

well as far as i remember, in RE DirCut one ps1 you read on the attic some newspaper, before you find the secret room with the lookout on the heliport.

Not what Im talking about, Im talking about a newspaper in Raccoon City, its probably on the first Outbreak game and on the first scenario of that game, Js Bar, so its not canon then and cannot be treated as fact.

Just thought it might help.

Its in one of the Outbreak File 1 scenarios...possibly the first.

I wouldnt neccessarily dismiss it as non-canon though, as near enough everything that happens in File 1 & 2 can fit nicely into what happens during the main games.
