I've just bought SF4 at the weekend and am trying to compete online.
However, out of around 100 matches i've only won 3 so far!!!!
Basically, i'm getting my ass handed to me on a plate.
I need a training regimin to improve, but I'm not learning well from playing online because i'm getting beaten all the time.
Also, do people find that a lot of players seem to have a worked out sequence of moves that they stick to to win. I don't see a lot of variation or interesting combos, just a lot of sticking to unblockable moves etc.

I know how you feel, being a Vega player and all, because people do the same moves over and over. They get very predictable after a while and then become easy to beat, trust me, Especially Ken and Ryu players because they all do the same thing.
The way I improved was I went on training mode, set all the bars and stuff to normal super combo gain (Compared to usual when i chuck it on infinite because I love hitting people with Vega's ultra XD)
then pretty much pair your main against common online matchups (For me its: ryu, Ken, Gouki/Akuma, Zangief and Sagat).
then I set them to CPU controlled and gradually go up and up in level until youre fighting them on full difficulty, it gives you practice on getting around their combos and movesets and you then see why they become predictable.
Also, learn to focus/move cancel, It helps a tonne because they prepare for you to focus and you can just input something else after cancelling, which catches them offguard.

Don't expect to be good at a game straight away. I find that fighting games require a lot of practice before jumping into online matches and getting beaten over and over will just frustrate you rather than help you.
I'd recommend completing the game a few times over with various characters on various difficulties, completing the challenges in Challenge mode then going into Training mode for a little while to create a few combos you think might work well.
I find what also helps is having a sparring partner, that way it can give you the chance to test your moves out in a friendly human match rather than against a CPU or aggressive spammer.
You probably won't find much variation with moves whilst you're fighting players with low BP and GP as they tend to spam the special moves.
Anyway, practice is the key to becoming good at any game. Lots and lots and lots of it. :)
Yeah! i agree! practice is the best way. dont forget that most of the online players have been playing streetfighter since the 90's when SFII first came out. i always have alpha 3 on my DS or my PSP with me and i play once a day at least. you dont have to be as obsessed as i am but just keep trying online and litle by litle you will get better.
Try out all the trials (well at least the ones for your favourite character) then you can get better with the timing of combos. After that, try them out in arcade on anything harder than easy then see if you can get the combos in as well as knowing when or when not to attack.
Also if you have friends/family that play this then invite them around.

I also found that playing constantly against my friends and my brother that I started to get better, and watching my brother play as he'd go "Watch they're going to do this, oh and now this." and you'd start seeing how people online play.
Practice makes perfect, just keep at it ^_^
