View Full Version : PS3 Installations
Why is the PS3 suffering to these installations as the blu-ray can handal more data and the PS3 is meant to be the most powerful console and near all but future proof? I could understand a download file to help loading times and improve faster game-play action but to be honest on my other games the file is no where near as big normally less than half the size of capcom games? Is it just capcom?

Theres multiple reasons, and it really depends. The first and foremost is that its a standard for every PS3 console to come with a hard drive, meaning that developers have a little more freedom working with the PS3 compared to other consoles, as this hard drive can be used to shorten load times etc.
In Capcoms case though, theyre making the installations mandatory so that it can run on-par with the other systems - as the blu ray drive in the PS3 is an earlier one than the others, meaning its a slower read speed. Capcom want to do their best in making sure they run the same, and thus, make the installation mandatory.

- and end up making the game run faster, better at the same time. I dont think the reason for making it mandatory has been disclosed, its a valid assumption, though.
People (with an HDD) wouldve loved a mandatory installation for Lost Odyssey, Id say.

Perfect examples of the install function are Unreal Tournament 3, Folklore and Genji 2. Although some may argue they arent great games, the installs are 100% optional, and the increase in speeds are EXTREMELY noticeable.

I wouldve said that by reading reviews, but once I actually got my hands on a retail copy, the load times have been fixed. I believe Gamespot even made amendments to their review to disclose the differences between the review and retail versions. Seems MistWalker / FeelPlus took the criticisms on board and made the load times much faster - and to be honest I dont notice it heaps either.
But this is a PS3 installation topic. >_><
so the PS3 isnt as good as the 360 because blu-ray slows things down?

Compare the results as to loading times.
aaah, i see. well now i kinda understand why MS are hesitant about using Blu-Ray to replace DvD.

Thats not quite the reason either. Its not the MEDIUM itself per se, but rather the hardware that reads it. Although I dont know the technical specifics, the PS3 drive reads at a slower speed than the 360 drive, as the PS3 drive WAS newer and uncharted technology at the time of release.
Regardless, its nothing to do with Bluray itself, but the hardware used to read it. Theres already faster drives out that [may] replace the current PS3 one. >_> Though I dont know if there is enough financial viability for that to happen.
