Once again we see Capcom doing something on the PS3 that didnt happen on the 360. Considering the graphics arent anywhere near as improved over the 360 version - weve gotta ask why theyre making these installs mandatory. Regardless - Im sure itll lead to a better experience in reducing load times, but those with the new 40Gb PS3s had better get their HDDs upgraded if this trend is anything to go by.
Lost Planet Requires 5GB Installation

Capcom was kind enough to send us a pre-release copy of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for our PlayStation 3. Surprisingly, just like Devil May Cry 4, Capcom also requires a 5GB installation that can take up to 15-20 minutes. Only this time, there isnt much to read on-screen, and its pretty much pointless to sit in front of the TV watching it install so very slowly.
While we are confident that the 5GB installation is worth it, will this be a Capcom requirement for all of their PS3 titles? Perhaps.

Seems a shame, but lets hope it turns out to be better than the 360 version, considering that there IS extra content. The recently released demo however, isnt a good indicator >_<.

Its indeed mandatory, takes about 10 minutes.
Wow im kinda glad i dont own a ps3 now, i couldnt cope with all the installations. Its madness, 5gb per game, and most people only have 40gb HDD, whats gonna happen if you dont really want to delete anything? or if your playing 8-9 games in a row that need an installation :| all for the sake of reduced loading times, which i didnt see the problem with any on lost planet or DMC4 for the 360, a 5gb install for like 1-2less seconds in loading times....

lol. Were talking about 2 (two) games here.
Its nothing to worry about yet Pheo, only if the majority of other companies start asking for PS3 owners to download files will it become a problem. Id expect Sony could fix this problem easily should it arise anyway, with an external Hard Drive or something similar.

Thats not the point, 2 could easily turn into 4, 4 to 6, 6 to 8 etc.
Also an external Hard Drive isnt that just hoggeling more money from its customers? Theyve turned the PS3 into an ugly looking PC, id still get one though when i see a game i must have and isnt multi-platform.
Sure 10 minutes isnt long, just a waste of space for a 1-2 second reduced loading times....

Thats the point. Could.
External HDD? You could easily exchange the internal one for a larger one. Not limited to a specific manufacturer either. Well see how things develope. Optional installs might be the best solution. Personally I generally dont mind waiting 15 minutes for such benefits.

Have you got a PS3? Have you waited to install, and then actually seen the differences in load times?
Its too much for too little, especially in Lost Planets case, where the game is TERRIBLE to run. Theres slow down in single player and even WORSE lag in the online portion. Its gonna be the first game Ive ever bought and then sold within a 1 week period.

The problem here isnt the PS3, its Capcom. Other developers dont ask you to install anything even remotely as large (or nothing at all) just to play the game. How Capcom expects PS3 owners to run a year old port with a required installation when a developer like Naughty Dog can make a game like Uncharted that owns Lost Planet in every way, and NOT force PS3 owners to install anything is beyond me. Maybe its just Capcom being lazy. Or Capcom treating PS3 owners like crap. Again.

The PS3 version seems to be fine. With a mandatory install its somewhat impossible to see differences. I didnt notice any load times in-game, except for a split second in transitional areas. However, I havent spent a great deal of time with it yet, so any impressions are up to and including mission 4. Apart from the demo theres currently no way to test the multiplayer part.
So hey, I cant tell whether the PS3 version is better than what youve described just yet. It seems to be. As for that being too much for too little thats merely your opinion, nothing more. I have a different one.
Interesting comparison with Uncharted, by the way.

Ahh so Seven you have been playing it also?
Im still trekking through it myself, while I wait for the auction to end. Until then, lets hope I get up to the extra content.
Still one of the most disappointing ports Ive ever played. Capcom shouldnt of farmed this one out.
I cant believe that people moan about installing a game.
I remember the days when a Spectrum game could take 10, 15 or even 20 minutes plus to load and thats every time you played the game and not just for the first play.
But yes it is a terrible port of the 360 version.
the demo isnt the finished game.
... is it? >=s
I have the full game, indirectly from playasia.com thanks to my brother who receive my games then forwards the to me in europe :d

How illegal yet how so awesome =P
But yeah, Im almost done with it. The extra content doesnt look to be anything groundbreaking but Ill make a better judgement later.
Still a shame the port is so botched.

Feels like a waste though as I have gone back to the 360 version as it is the better version.
