View Full Version : Reason for PS3 Install

Recently on Major Nelsons podcast, a capcom rep has stated the reason for the install being required is:-

So essentially, on the PS3 version its gotta install some files on the hard drive in order to have the game run as fast [on the PS3] as it does on the 360.

For reference, its around the 29 minute mark on the podcast, which can be found here (http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/02/10/show-266-the-one-about-e-s-vacation-and-devil-may-cry-4.aspx)

This pretty much validates what I wrote in the original Hub thread (for those who saw it before 777 decided to remove it).

This ties in with the fact the PS3 drive is a lower speed as the 360 one.

So yeah, theres the reason finally revealed.

What I removed was pretty much nonsense, in its specific context, that is. Had you written that one drive is faster than the other, hey it wouldnt be DMC specific but correct and somewhat interesting. You obviously didnt state it like youve done now. What you wrote was not about the reason but about the consequences (wrong ones, one may add). Some of what you refer to was mentioned in following posts, what Ive deleted was in the OP.
That being said, its worth noting that the PS3 version installs more then the quoted some files which makes it end up running faster than the 360 version. The 360 version - in order to run as fast - would (now) need to install some files on the hard drive. While youre at it, James, whats the reason for that not being possible?

Im not here to argue with you Seven. Im just reporting it as I hear it.

Its kinda stupid. One reason I prefer consoles is the fact you dont (didn„t, in the good old times) have to install the games. Next theres games that requiers you have Xbox 460 Elite or The Best version of ps3...

the PS3 is supposed to be more powerful and have better hardware than than the 360, why is there an installation required for it, why not have the game run faster in the first place? Or is it because of hardware requirements that the ps3 lacks at first?

Installation is positive thing guys, consider the 20+ hours (100s in some cases) youll be playing compare to the 22 minutes it takes to install and if it makes for a smoother experience Im all for it.

would you guys rather the PS3 just not get DMC4 or something?

I dont mind - heck Im really up for anything that makes that specific version on-par with the other version released.

As for the PS3 being powerful - it is - but some of the hardware is very early adoption (IE. The Blu-Ray drive) so it runs at a slower speed. When it comes down to it though, the game is near the same bar a few frame rate / shader differences.

Does the game even work without installing it?

No - they wanted it to run on-par / better than the 360 version so had to make the install mandatory.

Thanks for the info James....we probably wouldnt need this installation if Capcom stuck with the idea to make Devil May Cry 4 PS3 exclusive

That is an interesting point of speculation - as there wouldnt be another version to compare to and thus no need to bring it up to par / even better than the other version.

Mind you, the load times arent that bad anyway but its a shame its mandatory as its definitely one of the downfalls people are seeing in that specific version.

Sigh. DMC4 "load times" on PS3. DO NOT PANIC!

Hey, all. It s true: the first time you drop your DMC4 Blu-Ray disc into your PS3 tray, you re going to be treated to an exciting 22 - 25 minute load process as the disc spins a few gigs of data onto your hard drive. While the game is loading, you get to watch a really nifty series of screens that completely catch you up on the DMC4 backstory. Think of it as compressing the last three "seasons" into a single info blast, accompanied by some fantastic DMC artwork. It s great for those new to the series and also a good refresher to serious fans (you can also check out all these screens again later in the Library mode).

If you don t want to watch the "Previously, on Devil May Cry." portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back. You re going to be spending some serious time with this game, and we don t want you going hungry. Low blood sugar will make you dizzy and you ll need to be focused like an Alan Parsons Project to defeat the enemies in this game.

Wah! The game takes 20 minutes to install the first time. Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren t making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click "Yes!" on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes. Installing on a console may seem like a weird idea, but there s a real benefit. Unreal Tournament also has an option to install files onto your PS3; I ve done it and it makes a great game even better.

Once installed - once, mind, not every time you play, as I ve seen "reported" on certain web sites less interested in facts than in OMG histrionics - the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times. You ll be amazed how fast levels load, the virtually instantaneous transition from cut scenes to action and that you re continuously playing the game, as opposed to staring at loading screens of a door opening every time you move from one room to the next.

Everyone good? Deep breaths! DMC4 should start hitting North American stores tomorrow. Hope you get a signed copy of the Collector s Edition!

PS: all DMC4 cut scenes are also instantly skippable, just in case you re pressed for time. You can always go back later and watch any cut scene you skipped in Theater mode once you ve beaten the level. Heck, the game will even play all cut scenes in order without pausing, which is sorta like watching a DMC4 CG movie!

What the... So even if you dont mind the longer loading screens, you still MUST install it. What if someone hasnt got the room in the console for it? And if theres gonna be more games like this, its like with PC. You need to install and uninstall the games all the time, because the memory just runs out.
-.-

Even if it did, I doubt there would be any chance of skipping it.
