No. It's aweful! :(
Now SH-series is definitely dead for me.

That cover art really doesn't suit Silent Hill. Kinda makes me think more of ICO for some reason... That's a terrible art style for one of the most twisted videogames ever (And the only series to have left a sickening feeling in my stomach).

Why? You haven't even played the game yet...this is, quite literally, judging a book by its cover...

The cover portrays a form of corrupted and destroyed innocence...which is perfect for Silent Hill.

Admittedly, the cover is a bit too basic, but it still conveys some of the very same meanings behind previous titles.

Finally, someone reserving judgement for the final product.

It's an interesting point and a good metaphor. Did you not expect something a bit more graphic for an SH cover though? The cover gives me more of an impression of fantasy than horror.

I never really expect anything from a Silent Hill cover...because they're all different.

I kind of figured that the cover would play around with the Ice, and would probably have a different style than previous iterations, due to it being a kind of "fresh start" to the series.

In the long run, it kind of makes more sense. The previous installments have had graphic or horrifying things on the covers, because that was the focus of the series.

We don't quite know what the focus of this game is, so the cover may be more fitting to the game than even I realise...

EDIT:

Also, just noticed...this is the American cover.

The American covers are always worse than the European ones. European covers tend to be more subtle in their approach.

I agree with you people compared to:

yeah its something like a JRPG would have ^^; also reminds me of lost planet XD

But like I say, this isn't like every other Silent Hill game.

It isn't going to be a carbon copy, and as much as I like the covers for SH2 and Origins, I'm also kind of relieved that we're not getting a Brown cover again.

Whilst the design is different, I think they've made it way too obvious to the point that its shock value is either too obvious to be scary or simply intimidating.

I can't really judge if the move is good or bad yet, I've not read up on Shattered Memories, I have no idea if snow/frost/ice has a pivotal role in the game or if this cover design is purely metaphorical.

The covers up until around Silent Hill 3, maybe 4, have been rather abstract, and sorta implied a garbled and corrupted reality, SH3 had the protagonists face, which isn't all that abstract, SH4 had a door...arty... and SH5 was basically - This is the game, deal with it. I suppose this cover could be considered more so abstract, however, it's far too obvious in its execution, they are clearly going for shock this time.

Except, as I pointed out a moment ago, this is the American cover.

Let's compare the American covers to the European ones shall we?

Silent Hill 1: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/514V8cOIz5L._SL500_AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519P6AS2XEL._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill 2: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41bn%2BZhgviL._SL500_AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41AJ22FAP7L._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill 3: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/413450YG6FL._AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SCSKE8JFL._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill 4: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51R3Q2KW3SL._AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SQW5MH4PL._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill Origins: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Im4ZMH9iL._AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BvwzJyamL._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill 5: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61vdlSfBw-L._AA280_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61V1-E8ZBeL._SL500_AA280_.jpg)

Silent Hill Movie: American (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C03VDHH6L._SL500_AA240_.jpg) European (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51LZMzRDpiL._SL500_AA240_.jpg)

Has anybody noticed how un-subtle the American covers are compared to the European versions?

The image in the original post is an American cover (due to the age rating, and the rating board), so the European cover is (hopefully) going to be more subtle than this particular cover.

Also, yes, Ice/Snow has a large role to play in Shattered Memories.

you know what they say dont judge a book (game) by its cover, hehe... :)

Dante, essentially they will be replacing the rusty/malfunctioning industrial thematics with ice. I think personally it's a rather stupid decision from what I've seen so far, but I suppose they are trying to redefine the first game in terms other than what we know and love about the original Silent Hill.

I love the original and I love the way this will be utilising the hardware, but I just can't help but feel it'll be no where near as creepy, moody or as brooding as their Japanese-handled cousins. It's a shame that we'll never truly get another real Silent Hill experience. =( Homecoming has cemented that fact.

(That being said, New Translation was a rather enjoyable game that really creeped me out - no surprises to find most of that development team was actually Team Silent members >_>)

the only american cover i like better is homecoming. the european verison is too yellow and red like so many others (resident evil 5, farcry2, rainbow 6, e.c.t) but the rest look soo better in europe than america.

shattered memories i think isn't going to be as scary as the previous ones. ice just isn't creepy. - too bright to be scary.

Personally I prefer Silent Hill 2's US cover and Silent Hill Origins' US cover too.

As for Ice, a lot of people think that it's very scary to be trapped in snow and/or ice. I suppose that element could add to the fear.

I love Homecoming's EU cover. =3

...this one's not gonna be as scary? The game trailers seem to say otherwise. You can't even climb a wired fence safely anymore. :( I miss the old days *sob*, when the enemies did nothing but chase you randomly and stop chasing you randomly. Where they just clawed at you, as opposed to this game, where they grab you off the fence and drag you down.
Alos, I can't imagine them making the snow bright. There would be blizzards and stuff, blocking your view of the enemies.

Of course...I just presumed a few things there. Also, it can't get much less scary than Homecoming, can it?

Edit: I do love me some snow. That is all.

is Silent Hill: Shattered Memories made in Japan or USA or some other country ?

thezombiemessia

USA. It's made by the company that did Origins, which I thought was an excellent addition to the series.

Huh??

Acid Burn

It can be called an addition, but not the part of the main series. It's not old-school SH that Team Silent made. :(

Origins is very much a part of the traditional Silent Hill series.

As is homecoming, even if it isn't a very good game.

And Silent Hill 4? That's terrible, but made by Team Silent.

I don't see the big deal with it all to be honest. Team Silent abandoned the series a long time ago...I'd see it as a good thing that at least 1 developer out there is willing to get off of their arses and continue the series, Japanese or not.

And on top of that, I'd rather have the Origins developer doing it, than the Homecoming developer.

Completely agree :D 0 was MUCH better than Homecoming.

Seriosuly from a majority and review point of view don't fall into Silent Hill 4 Vs Origins. SH4 is noted as the culrpit as to why the series went downhill.

I've not played it but I know what the majority say about it. I always used to follow previews, reviews and fan opinions online.

thezombiemessia
19-08-09, 21:18
The major problem with SH4 is that it was originally designed as a completely seperate Survival Horror title, and was later changed to Silent Hill when Konami got scared that it wouldn't sell too well.

Sh4 was too Japanese for a Silent Hill title...if that makes any sense? Whilst all the others focused on American life and culture, and focused on a kind of crossbreed of American & Japanese Horror, SH4 took away the American Horror aspect, which took it away from the SH series.

But, again, like I say...Team Silent can't be bothered to make any more Silent Hill games, so at least other developers are willing to give it a go...

I just hope this one portrays the characters in an interesting way...which was one of the things that was done well in Homecoming, I thought. I mean, introducing each character with interesting music that suits each character, and making sure that none of the characters get left behind throughout the story. 'tis the only thing that could muck up SM imo.

James Mitchell

SH4 is more of a Silent Hill game than Origins was. Origins was a terrible game that really took liberties with the game's storyline and as a result it suffered.

It's a good game, but I just don't think it's a very good Silent Hill game and it really ruins what was established in the original games.

thezombiemessia

I much refer Origins over SH4.

For me, it is:

1 - SH2
2 - SH1
3 - Origins
4 - SH3
5 - SH4
6 - Homecoming

I'm hoping Shattered Memories will be somewhere near the top of that list.
