Not sure about whether or not anyone else here work in any 3D tools, but I do use Max and Mudbox, myslef. -So if youve got any problems with that, fire at will, and Ill see what I can do to help you guys in the right direction.
Erm, in any case, today I got another program off a chap which is solely for unwrapping models. I have to admit, its a flippin handy tool as I can unwrap models in 3D space, as opposed to batteling through crammed polys in order to select faces in the Max interface and then lay them out on a map in the UV mode.

The programs called UVLayout, and if you fancy having a swing at it, you can try the demo here: http://www.uvlayout.com/

-Ive made a quick example of how it works by unwrapping one of our current game characters arm.
 Unwrapping Hydes arm (http://www.azurebot.com/work/example.avi)

its like all 3D modelers waste their time always making these cartoonish 3D models. (like in your example)
anyway, Id really want to study 3D modeling, but I dunno how to ask for that in these computer collage I was in.. I was just learning on some stupid program that I dont even know what Im doing. (I think it was something like.. some house design thing *dunno about any english word for that*)
Id start by making my main comic character which looks cool as hell..
did you learn on 3D modeling program thingy by yourself? I had to learn on Flash by myself.
but Ive tried out 3D Studio Max and it was IMPOSSIBLE starting a 3D model.. I pressed every single thing on it, trying to create something.. all I could do was copy another model and paste it to my project and move things around.

I dont think you have a lot of experience with 3D, then. How is stylism anymore waste than doing realism? I do realism as well, but I honestly find creating solid stylized art just as challanging, if not more. You even contradict yourself with saying you think stylism is a waste, but youd do it anyway.

In any case, Ive learned Max going to university. Both Max and Maya [which are the most commonly used ones] are techy applications, and its not easily learnt on your own. -Making a 3D model is easy enough as theres millions of tutorials on it online, but making an aesthetic good model that works bug free in-game, requires experience through industry or studies.

If you just want to play around with 3D to see if you like it or not, theres a very basic program for it called Milkshape, which you can get here: http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/
-It might be a good place to start.

That said, like most other artists would agree with, anyone can get good in 3D, but to really master it, you have to have a good foundation in 2D work as well! So dont forget to practise your drawing skills if you want to become a 3D artist.

kool, thanks.
rare I say that..

anyway, Ill try this out... later.
Im so busy this year.. Im actually making a big project to get front screend on newgrounds (I know it does sound like bullsh**)
but Ill be working on it until Halloween.. called ZP: Zombie Slaughter about me and bondey going to E3, but end up playing for life.. against.. well, you know.

anyway, you can see whats finished of that flash movie here http://www.freewebs.com/death_near/zombieproject.html
ugh.. I feel so non-talented. also I really need to fix that voice acting.
woah, hope 777 doesnt notice that... thing at the extra menu <_<

If I know something about 3D, I think its about how hard to learn it truly. I spend countless times to create a skin for a model and wrap it and result? Fail! after the amount of boring hours across computer to learn it for months just with the tutorials over web, I am bored and leave 3D and turn back to 2D.

Cartoonish or realistic, both of them hard and not easy as drafting something over paper with pencil as it seems.

True. Which is why theres still 2D concept artists in the video games industry; its far more efficient and less time consuming to knock up a sketch than it is to build a model.

But yeah, if you still want to learn 3D, you can always ask me here if you get stuck. :)

Im an AutoCAD user, I make mostly things like houses, stairs, furniture and stuff like that, never tried a person or an animal though, its not my job.

Ah, yeah. Another Autodesk program. At least you dont have to worry about having budgets etc, which is nice. Good, good. :)

my head hurts...

I think Ill stick with my camera and photoshop :D

And maybe 2d design when needed :D

Its also odd that some great modelers dont even know how to draw a stickman at 2D, but sure I know persons who great at both of them and thats what makes you a better option in gaming industry when they search for a worker :)

But I should still like to learn how to skin, but please an easy way

Clayonite

Yeah, in some cases that is true. However, if you look at it from the developers point of view; who would you hire: A person who creates good 3D art? or a person who creates good 3D art and also understands anatomy as well as deliver quick ideas through sketches?
-The competition is very tough that way, so its something to bear in mind. But then again, on the other side, if you make amazing original 3D art of high technical standard, theyll hire you for that, and not for your doodle skills.

Youd like to draw skin? Or do you mean how to make a skin texture for 3D models?

Trousevil
13-02-08, 19:03
I mean how to make a skin texture, I will mostly use it to design enivoronment and machines in 3D and use them in concept art but since I am lack of enough intelligence to understand how to do it, I am not able to do it :(

Clayonite

Alright. This is a semi-realistic model Im doing in my sparetime. The textures arent finished yet, but the face is. [Im gonna re-unwrap and do the other textures properly]

Artists often have their own method of making skin, but this isnt too far from how I prefer to do it anyway:

You can find a more advanced tutorial on it here (http://www.pioroberson.com/tuts/tut_texturing_tricks.htm) as well.

nice.
did you use photoshop or something for that shadowy thingy? Ive tried out photoshop and its just too complicated for me.. I use Flash 8 for editing photos with shadows and those kind of things, and you almost cant do anything with Flash.. I gotta learn doing things with photoshop, my bro knows a little about it. Ill try asking him for help.
Im thinking of making a skin like that myself..

Clayonite

Shadowy thingy? Youre gonna have to be more specific, sir. And yes, if you cant use an application like Photoshop or Painter, youre not gonna get very far in making skin etc. Photoshop is actually really easily learnt if you just spend a day or so with it. Of all the software I know, Photoshop is the program Im most familiar with. So if you want to make something specific I can help you with it anyways. :)

Photoshop is an amazing piece of software that is well worth the time taken to learn it.

Ive spent 6 months using it, and Ive barely scratched the surface.

Mainly use
-burning
-dodging
-levels
-curves
-filters
-cloning
-airbrushing
-sharpening
-layers

and a couple other things, but thats barely anything. And I find new things every now and then

I should really get back to drawing again, give my camera a break ....

But I dont think the scanner works, and Im not very good at drawing.

Clayonite

Oh, dear. You can scrap filters, burning and dodging, to be honest. You should rather be working in layers, using brushes and blending options. Gives far less messy results and its much easier to fix if you do something wrong. :)

Viper
15-02-08, 09:23
All burning and dodging is done through duplicate layers, blending options and masking.

It generally gets the job done, as for filters, theyre often done using slabs of colour with a low opacity, and sometimes using lighten depending on what I want to achieve.

Everything needs to be reversible [:D]

hehe i stay on my panting alld the 3d programs make me crazy i cant understand hwo its make

Clayonite

Aye, to be honest with you, I still prefer 2D over 3D as well. :)
But even though I love doing art, the time limits really make my blood boil. Tonight Im working on a new image which is due by Wed, so Ill probably post it when its done. Im hoping to finish it by tomorrow morning anyways, so well see how that goes.
But right now its noodle time and screen break for me. I have a long night ahead~

This is a concept character I made using Max, textured in Photoshop and then added some final touches in BodyPaint 3D.
BodyPaint 3D is really good for stuff like fixing seams and adding small details, in which you can go back and fix better in Photoshop. I also find it very good for drawing strands of hair, as the program allows you actually draw on the model in 3D space.
Check out the program here (http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/bodypaint3d/bodypaint3d_e.html) if youre interested.

this looks really awesome.. youre so good at this, you should do a 3D animation or something. youd get well known for that..
