View Full Version : 2D fighting games on PS3 are still awesome

It seems that some UK PS3 magazines have fallen out of love again with 2D fighting games. I've been reading games mags for long enough to realise that there's some blatant promotional brainwashing going on at times though and it's all about what games they know will sell. It's clear that they're getting behind the new Tekken game and are clearing space to do so because it's such an eagerly anticipated title with fighting game fans. They've got to stay popular to stay in business and if this means that they have to turn their backs on 2D games for a while then that's what it takes. Don't worry though. They know that the 2D games will always be popular because so many people still love them, so it wont be long until they heard their readers back in a more two dimentional direction when the 3D titles start to get a bit stale.

Anyway, Street Fighter Alpha 2 is making its way to the PSN store in September, so that'll keep the retro gamers happy. It's an awesome game but I always preferred Alpha 3. We'll probably be waiting a while for that one though. You could track down a used copy on Ebay, but you always run the risk that the disc has been used as a coffee mug coaster or something in the past.

For those who want a little more variety, Marvel vs Capcom 2 is on PSN for download right now. It's a little more challenging than some of the other Street Fighter titles but it's a challenge worthy of a little dedication for the privilege of playing as Hulk, the X-Men and Jill Valentine (to name but a few characters). It may have been released nine years ago but it still looks awesome. Don't pay attention to the low magazine scores if you like games like this.

My favourite right now is King of Fighters XII though. My import copy arrived this week and I'm loving it. I know it wont have the longevity as many Street Fighter titles I've played due to the lack of fight modes but it's a high quality refreshing change. I've got my old Chinese housemates to thank for my appreciation of the SNK games as we used to play them so much in our uni days. Well worth checking out with a very familiar Street Fighter feel to it. Once again, ignore damning magazine reviews and take the opportunity to form your own opinion on SNK's latest installment. Despite my love for great looking 2D games, I'd still like to see a Capcom vs SNK that looks something like Street Fighter IV too though.

Is anyone else playing any other 2D games they'd recommend for PS3?

Blazblue. An Arc system game (the same people who made Guilty Gear) which has some pretty sweet music and the gameplay is pretty cool in having 2D characters and 3d background. Was released in the US not too long ago.

Also you can find quite a lot of the Guilty Gear Series which were for PS2 but is only worthy if you have the 60gb version.

Isn't there a few Snk Classics up there as well?

Was released in the US not too long ago.Agreed. I got the US version last week. It looks and sounds awesome, the gameplay has a lot of depth and there's far more longevity in general to the whole thing in comparison to KOF XII (more game modes, stuff to unlock etc). I actually found out about this game from a UK games mag that (surpisingly) reviewed this as an import game and had a lot of praise for it. The UK version will be released in 2010 with extra characters and moves, but for those who want the best brand new 2D fighting game now it's worth paying extra for an import version.

And yes, there are some great SNK classics on the PS1 and PS2 which can be played on the PS3. But be warned, like Shadow2bolt said, the PS2 games are usually only compatible with the 60gb PS3, so be sure that your machine can play PS2 games before spending money on them. Further bad news for those in the UK is that there are only two PS1 SNK titles that are compatible with UK machines and they are Capcom Vs. SNK Pro and Real Bout Fatal Fury (both very rare). Sadly, the other titles released in the US and Japan were not released in the UK and these discs will not work in a UK PS3 (unlike Bluray discs, PS1 games were region coded and so PS1 import games don't work).
