Yes! Theyve strayed away from FF12 and introduced unique characters again! The graphics obviously make this possible, Im guessing.

By unique do you mean job type? Like how Lulu is a Black Mage-type? If so, they added that back in Zodiac Job System, something noone else but Japan received.

By unique, I meant their looks overall. Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer. I never knew Japan had anything unique within the Final Fantasy games. I suppose it makes sense though.
