View Full Version : Guide to Xlink Kai, or "how to go online with Monster Hunter Freedom"
Before we start, let me say the following: Monster Hunter Freedom 1 and 2 are not designed for network multiplayer. Its designed for local multiplayer. However, some people have found workarounds that allow them to play local multiplayer matches over the internet, using such things as Xlink Kai. Please note that Xlink Kai isnt a Capcom product, and the game isnt designed to work with it, so Capcom cant give you any tech support with it.
Some people on the old forums made some useful guides that might help you though, so I have reprinted them here for you.
Please also note that the reposting seems to have put some extra smilies in there that werent there before. - they should read USB On the plus side, they make it look nice and friendly...

Monster Hunter Freedom Online Play
A Step By Step Guide
By: Orlean Knight
*Introduction Notes & Disclaimers: I by no means take all the credit for much of this tutorial.
Many steps which I have follow have already been lined out in many other FAQs and guides,
Im just simply reproducing them. However anything which includes screenshots is completely
my own.
*Please Read Before Pressing On*
- First and foremost, allow me to remind anyone who is trying to get Monster Hunter Freedom online that it is absolutely critical that you slow down, take a breath, and actually read everything within this Thread. Ive written for it a very good reason, and if you do not follow everything properly then you will certainly lose your way.
Also remember this tutorial will be constantly updated depending on various outcomes people have. Ive postposed producing this guide for sometime until I was certain the information I was providing was the simplest method possible and the one with far fewer chances of failure! Just follow this guide and you should be alright.
Material List
- Before we begin, it is important you make sure you do not attempt to get online yourself or do anything you think you may find as a handy. Just take your time and read instructions before even lifting a finger to get your PSP working over the internet. Just make sure you have the following materials:
*Sony Playstation(c) Portable (PSP)
*Monster Hunter Freedom
*Datel Wi-Fi MAX (http://pgrevolution.com/2005/12/20/datel-wifi-max-for-psp/) (Discard CD & all CD Drivers)
*PC Desktop or Laptop Connected to Interenet
*Broadband Internet Connection
*Patience
Preparing Your Materials
-For those who have installed the drivers from the CD that came with the Wifi MAX, uninstall them so that we can begin. If you installed either of the server programs and/or the media manager, you can leave them as is (they have no effect or purpose in this process).
-Make sure that the Wifi MAX is NOT plugged in when you begin this process.
-Make sure your PSPs Wireless Lan Switch (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/psp01.jpg) is turned on or pushed into the upright position.
-Return to your PSP Main Menu by pressing the Home Button.
Step 1 Switching PSP to Ad-Hoc Mode
-It is important that you set your PSP to the proper setting or else everything that will you do beyond this step will not work properly.
-Within the PSP Main Menu, go the the Settings Tab and scroll down to the Network Settings Sub-Tab. Press X to enter.
-Select Ad Hoc Mode, then select Ch 1. Press X button to save settings.
-Step 1 completed.
[Step 2 Activate Monster Hunter Freedom
-Simply turn on the game, load your character, and wait in town. (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide01.jpg) Do not proceed to do anything further.
-Step 2 completed.
Step 3 Getting XLink Kia.
-XLink Kai Evolution VII is a program which runs on your home PC or Laptop. It is a Tunneling Software, in short it allows you to play games online which normally could not be played online.
-To download XLink Kai Evolution VII, proceed to the Team XLink Homepage (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/) and follow the image instructions.

-Step 3 completed.
Step 4 Wi-Fi MAX Drivers
-The drivers which come inside the Wi-Fi MAX box should not be installed at anytime if you wish to play Monster Hunter Freedom Online. Simply discard the CD or save it for anything you may need it for in the future.
-Download the ZyDAS ZD1211B v6.17.0.0 (http://www.atheros.com/RD/ZyDAS/web_driver/ZD1211B/Windows/ZD1211BWinPkgS_6_17_0_0_ALL.zip) drivers for Windows.
-When the file downloads, unpack the .Zip file and install the driver onto your home PC or Laptop. This driver is required to be on the same computer in which you desire to run XLink Kia.
-Step 4 completed.
Step 5 Adjusting Wi-Fi Max
-Plug Wi-Fi Max into your PC or Laptop. Make sure to plug the Wi-Fi Max into the computer which has XLink Kia & ZD Drivers already installed upon it. Also, be sure to not have the Wi-Fi Max Driver CD inside the CD tray at this time, as it will want to install from those drivers.
-When Wi-Fi Max is plugged in, your computer will detect it. If it does not automatically install itself, it will prompt you to detect for the drivers. In the Wizard, just select Recommended Search and it will locate the ZD Drivers and completely install.
-You know the installation is successful when you see this icon (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide15.jpg) at the bottom righthand corner of your screen.
-In order to begin adjusting your Wi-FI Max, return to Monster Hunter Freedom and move your character into the Online Gathering Hall (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide16.jpg).
-Once your character has begun loading into the Online Guild Hall, a green light (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide17.jpg) will begin flickering on the left side of your PSP. This indicates that your Wireless LAN is now trying to communicate with other networks in your area.
-Now it is time to activate your ZDWLan Utilitiy or otherwise known as the Wireless LAN Configuration Tool Plus. You can open this by double clicked the small ZD Icon at the bottom left of your screen or simply selecting Start --> All Programs --> ZyDAS IEEE --> ZDWLan Utility. Then follow the image instructions below.

-8- Finalize (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide25.jpg)
-Step 5 completed.
Step 6 Adjusting XLink Kia
-Now that your Wi-Fi Max is running smoothly, now its time to allow XLink Kia to communicate with it. So adjustment of Kia is extremely important or else youre not going to get anywhere very quickly.
-Open the Kia Config. Start --> All Programs --> XLink Kai Evolution VII --> Start Kia Config. And then follow the image instructions below.

[list]
Step 7 Using Xlink Kia
-Now, its time not only get a handle of the XLink Kia program, but its also time to test and see if your Monster Hunter Freedom can successfully communicate with other players online.
-Before starting XLink Kia, it is extremely important that your character is already inside the Online Gathering Hall within the game. Once your character is there, proceed with the guide.
-Open the XLink Kia. Start --> All Programs --> XLink Kai Evolution VII --> Start Kia. And then follow the image instructions below.

-9- Create An Arena Part 2 (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide37.jpg)
-10- Private Arena Basics (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide38.jpg)
-If you are able to see people within your Gathering Hall, then everything is correctly configured. Now its time to play online Monster Hunter!
-Step 7 completed.
Step 8 Hosting & Joining Games
-Now that youve got people in your Gathering Hall, its time to do something with them.
-To Host a quest, speak to the Counter Girls (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide39.jpg) in the middle of the room. The girl is Red provides basic Gathering Hall Quests, while the girl in Blue provides Elite G-Ranked Quests which can only be accessed when you are Hunter Rank 3.
-Treasure Hunting is another form of Online quest, however it can only be playable by no more than two players. These quests can be found from the old man (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide40.jpg) at the left side of the room.
-To Join a quest, go directly to the Quest Board (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide41.jpg). Quests here will only appear if a player has a colored scroll by their name. Sometimes when viewing the board, the quest doesnt appear instantly. Often you will have to keep reloading the board until the quest appears.
-When you are ready to depart, proceed to the Departure Exit (http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/mhfguide42.jpg) . If you are simply joining a quest, pressing the Square will declair you as Ready to Depart. If you are the Host, you ultimately choose when to Launch the quest. If not everyone is Ready to Depart by the time you choose to Launch, those not ready will be left behind.
-Step 8 completed.
Guild Cards & Friend System
-Referring to the Monster Hunter Freedom Manual, you are now able to give & trade Guild Cards. These are records of your adventures, rewards, kills, and more. Giving these to players allows them to be able to view your records as they desire, also when you both accquire a card from one another you will gain Friendship Levels.
-Keeping your Guild Card updated is very important. Normally your Guild Card with automatically record pretty much everything, but when you begin the game your Monster List will be completely blank. To allow other players to see how many monsters youve slain and what sizes, purchase Monster Data from the Gathering Hall Merchant or the Wandering Merchant in town.
http://www.derenrylo.com//mhf/gc.jpg
-Friendship Levels are very rewarding, the more you play with people, the higher level you become. When you get high enough levels, such as 25 Friendship Levels for example, you can speak to the Guild Elder and recieve Tickets which can be trade to Veggie Elders (http://www.capcom.com/BBS/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10537) from some outstanding rewards.
Seeing other Avatars in the Gathering Hall
-Even when people have connected to your Gathering Hall, you may find it unsettling that you will still be alone in the Gathering Hall despite the fact you see other players name appearing in the corner of your screen.
Worry not, for this is completely natural. You are only able to see another Avatar when you Accept a quest. When two or more people have signed up for a quest, those who are also signed up with you will now appear within your Gathering Hall.
Hunter Ranks
-Hunter Ranks are not gained by the gathering of Guild Points, they are actually obtain by completing Gathering Hall quests. The Higher your Hunter Rank becomes, the more quests will become unlocked for you.
Gaining a Hunter Rank does not physically improve your characters stats. It only unlocks more of the game, which further unlocks more monsters, rare parts, weapons, armor, and items for you to use.
Players who gain in Hunter Rank get various colors in their name to display their level.
Hunter Rank 1 (Yellow) ---> Hunter Rank 2 (Orange) ---> Hunter Rank 3 & 4 (Purple) ---> Hunter Rank 5 (Red)
Ping
-This is very important when playing on XLink Kia because there is no sub-server boosting everyones ping for a more stable connection. For stable games, try to play with people whom are anywhere between 50ms -- 150ms. Anymore than that with four players can get a bit slow and laggy.
World Wide Communication
-Monster Hunter Freedom can play with version in Europe and Monster Hunter Portable in Japan. As long as the ping is stable and good and those players are also using Wi-Fi Max, you should be able to play with players from around the world.
Common Issues
-Sometimes when leaving the Guild Hall, XLink Kia and Wi-Fi Max break their connection. In this case, when returning to the Gathering Hall you may no longer be able to detect people within it. To fix this issue, simply log out of XLink Kia and make sure the KiaEngine is not activated at the bottom righthand corner of the screen. If it is, or you can not tell, Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select the Processes Tab and Cancel the KiaEngine.
Then unplug your Wi-Fi Max from your PC or Laptop and plug it back it. Restart XLink Kia and everything should work fine.
-Wi-Fi Max has trouble communicating with other network cards. Basically, if Wi-Fi Max users can only play with other Wi-Fi Max users, and anyone not using Wi-Fi Max can not play with them. Since there are plenty of Wi-Fi Max users, there should be little problem. But if you ever have horrible lag in-game and freeze at the Supply Box, the common issue is that someone is not using Wi-Fi Max while you currently are.

Ahhh, I was about to suggest we bring this back. Thanks for doing it Chompers
Is the reason for the lack of a dedicated infrastructure server all due to finances?
Is it because it simply would not hold enough people to warrant paying for the space?
Surely Monster Hunter is a top seller in Japan? Any chance you could tell us the Euro sales for 1 and 2 thus far?
I refuse to buy the game because of the lack of infrastructure and I dont have a wifi max or free available USB ports to justify buying it to get online either...and its such a shame because it had the potential to be a great online game.
I feel this is the reason why we may never see an online PSP resident evil. Which is such a shame..
thanks for bringing this back:)
No offence whatsoever to Uncle Chomp but why are you still using this guide? Its really outdated especially for Windows Vista users such as myself.
how do u do it on vista........is it any different:?:

sorry if i'm being stupid, but in the first guide, if i put my wireless into ad-hoc (i.e. computer to computer) how do i connect to the internet? must i have a wired internet connection for this to work? thanks

thanks for the advice dude. i prefer going hunting with my team on adhoc, though. but online will be cool once im set up.
will it work with Datel Wifimax?
will it work with Datel Wifimax?
It works best with Datel Wifimax!
I used to have this set up for Monster Hunter Freedom 1 and 2 but unistalled when I stopped playing. Now I have a new psp and laptop so hoping it should be like riding a bike.
But I had better email myself this link for when I get home as I have a feeling I'll be needing it! lol
So if anyone's on there in about 3 or so hours I'll see you on there! :)
Yeah, i think that I will be using Kai - I am going to buy MHFU soon, and I have a new PSP! (3000). :D My old one was dodgy...
So I will set this up rather than Jap PSN Ad Hoc thing; mainly so I don't have to have the PS3 on whilst I am trying to play MHF (my brother will probably want to be on that ;))
I look forward to playing some people online!

Can I use my desktop with a D-Link PCI Wireless card instead of buying a wifi max? I assume I would have to use the other drivers mentioned above instead of the D-Link drivers?
More people need PSP's and MHFU! lol
omg help me out i cant find wi-fi max Datel in holland
(near me it ain't) someone in holland help me out!
Does anyone know if something like this works with a normal wireless router? I have no idea what WiFiMax is :P I have O2 Broadband and their wireless box if that helps :/
Does anyone know if something like this works with a normal wireless router? I have no idea what WiFiMax is :P I have O2 Broadband and their wireless box if that helps :/
No idea.
Some one will be able to help you though
Below is a link to the Wifi MAX
http://www.play.com/Games/PSP/4-/866456/-/Product.html
So yeah. Set it all up. Xlink Kai keeps not working. And I can't use the WiFiMAX without losing my wireless connection so... Bleh. I'm guessing you need a wired connection to use this? Or life hates me ^^
Also, the image links dont work for me from the second post of this topic...
Edit: Did some research. And yes. Need a damn wired connection. Seriously. Technology is useless these days >_<
I got kai working...
post detailed problems and i'll try to help you!
I maybe wont be able to help with wifi max..
because i got the planex stick, which is recommended on the xlink kai website!
It's harder to follow this with vista, even after searching around.
I've done as much as I think I can, but it's not working. I don't really understand how to do the 'adhoc mode' on my wireless connections from my computer. Vista doesn't show the same tab layout, so I dunno if it exists, or how one would get there.
Edit:
Does it matter that my laptop has the wireless built in, or does it have to be external .. ?
Edit 2:
Never mind. x)

thanks for the guide man. now i need to buy a wifi dongle lol. il be online asap afterwards ^_^
I posted this yesterday in another thread but thought I'd do it again in case people were still having trouble.
It is quite straight forward...
First buy a Datel Wifi Max (link posted above) around £20 from most places.
Then you need to download software to get it to work with Xlink Kai (link below)
You will also need an ethernet cable to connect your pc (or laptop) to your router (this is because your wireless will be used by the Wifi Max to connect to your psp)
Then just follow these guides for either XP or Vista...
(XP) http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33951 (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33951)
(vista) http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33463
Just remember when connecting to your psp (using Zydas) make sure you have an IP address before opening Kai.
Should be of some more help :)
