My 60GB PS3 has just gotten the YLOD.

I hope Sony will cover the cost of the repair as I can't really afford to fork out £180.00 for it.

Has anyone else on this forum had a 60gb PS3 die on them, and did Sony repair it for you free of charge?.

If I do get it repaired do you get an extended warranty with it, incase it happens again?.

Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

I can't believe this has happened, I thought my 60GB PS3 would last forever.

Interesting, so far it seems that the 60gb version is malfunctioning more often than the other versions...

Im sorry for your loss, i know spike had the same problem

I still haven't bothered to phone up Microsoft about my 360. I really should do that.

Isn't the 60gb version the original version? That may explain why they are more likely to crash.

Best of luck to you.

I had some trouble a year ago with a PS3. I remember they swapped my 60gb model for a reconditioned one as they do keep a supply of the old 60gb for these types of problems. The service was free. I don't know if my problem was called the yellow light of death but basically my console blacked out during an installation and then could no longer read or do anything. I can't remember about the warranty either I'm afraid. I got the impression that my problem was caused by some hard drive failure but I'm not a tech head so can't say for sure.

Did they stop supplying the 60gb afterall? That sucks, I remember being impressed last time that they still had the back catalogue models since they no longer sold on the market.

Mine was replaced by a 3rd party insurer, but they get the replacments from sony and sony only do referb 60GB SKU's now so I oppted for a brand new one over a referb.

The reasion I chose a 3rd party insurance on it was they offerd 3 years for £70 ontop of the original 1 years garentee with the option to extend after the 3 years.. So i got a total of 4 years cover.

My first Ps3 was had the problem only 3 weeks into getting it so that was just a straight swap for anther 60Gb

my 2nd ps3 had the problem well after 12 months

Both my consoles died on me the last days. The 360 broke the 3rd time not willing to read the discs anymore. Good I still have guarantee on that one.

Well for the PS3... I'm still argueing with Sony about my 60GB-PS3. A brand new 80GB with a movie and a game is sold for like 339€. A store near my would trade my old PS3 + 299€ for a new one... and Sony/TVS still want 223€ bucks for a roasted Bluray-Laser...

As they even can't guarantee that I'll get another 60GB-Console, I asked them what should I do with my PS2-Games since an 80GB-PS3 isn't backward compatible anymore... I asked them if they wanna gimme cash for my PS2 games or give me a PS2 for free ^^

Well, all that what I read makes me more and more comfortable to belief that this world does not need/is not ready for consoles of the Generation PS3/360, and would say that the PS2 actually lasts on the market for as long as video games are getting sold.

Na, every console/console generation had its flaws. Remembering the first versions of the PS1 with the low cost laser slide that deformed after a while.... I think the PS2 had the same issues.

Sure, with new and even better technology the consoles get more vulnerable to breakdowns. But with the third or forth production generation those flaws are normally gone.

The PS2 used to be a disaster back in the day, especially with the original models. With the majority they would start causing trouble be refusing to play the blue backed discs and then eventually they would progress to be able to read nothing. As DS said almost every console has been known to get failure faults in their eaely days, although Nintendo seem to have a better track record. Mind you this is no longer the early stage of this generation, the red ring of death seems to be getting rarer with newer models and hopefully PS3's are also causing less problems.

I guess you're right. But something is definately weird about the life span of a console...

Thank's for all your help guys.:)

I think my best bet is to phone up Sony tomorrow and see what they say. From what i've read over the internet this seems to be a common problem with the 60GB models, so hopefully Sony will repair it for free if i mention it has the YLOD.

If not, then my best friend has 3rd party insurance on his and is willing to claim for it on that.

If you follow me on Twitter you already know that my 360 died on me, it was Saturday night as husband and I were setting up for a night of Gears of War, which was most annoying. We're so bad that we've already replaced it with an Elite. Geeks. :pit:

you won't get it fixed I am on my 3rd xbox and rather than wait weeks for repair I have just bought new ones. The other 2 are in the spare room waiting to be repaired and have been for ages. Ill never get round to it one has been there for over a year.

They sorted me out fine with the red ring and it only took a few days to a couple of weeks, they simply asked me to retain my hard drive. That's a fair time scale for a free job surely?

just purchase two so when one dies you can send it to be fixed and just use the other. then when that dies just used the replaced one and get the other fixed............not really sure why you'd buy three. lol

I am sure they are great both of my 360's went after 13 months exactly they wanted £75 or something to fix so I got new ones for £50 more and never had to go without. Even for a few weeks would kill me.

Update: I phoned the Sony Helpline up yesterday and explained what had happened, ie my PS3 had the YLOD and they agreed to replace it straight away, no questions asked. With it being a 60GB launch system I will have to wait a few weeks until they can source the parts needed for it, depending on whether the motherboard is damaged, or it has something to do with the thermal compound.

So to say I'm shocked at not having to fork out £180.00 for the repair bill, as my PS3 is 4 months over it's warranty is an understatement.

Thank's again for all the help and advice folks.

:hop:
